I'm going to split hairs and say that all of the software listed 100% free as in 'free beer' but the closed source programs are not free in the other meaning.

The GNU definition:

"The word ``free'' has two legitimate general meanings; it can refer either to freedom or to price. When we speak of ``free software'', we're talking about freedom, not price. (Think of ``free speech'', not ``free beer''.) Specifically, it means that a user is free to run the program, change the program, and redistribute the program with or without changes."

Depending on the licence most open source software is 100% free in both price and additional 'rights'

Kind of reminds me of my freewarePC article. I should do an update to it: The freewarePC Reloaded. There are a number of choices I would change, not the least of which is the AV - I've switched to avast! 4 Home Edition.

Anybody ever used POPpeeper? It's a small programme (freeware) that checks your POP3 and hotmail at a time you can specify. When you recieve mail it will alert you via a sound or via a notification window or via a flashing scroll lock let. I think it's really sweet.

The ability to create filters (on the full header) is of ever-increasing value to me - I have thirty already and the list is growing as the accursed spammers continually invent new dodges. By the way, I'm sorry to say some of the spammers could have got my e-mail address from this website, judging by the form of the `send to' address.

If you like free chess, seek out programs called Bringer and Winboard. Bringer plays a nice strong game. Winboard is nice in that you can plug in many different palying engines within the same basic interface. Many of these engines are free and if nothing else it's nice to see how different people create a chess playing program.

Avast! is probably one of the best AV programs I've used. CD Burner XP Pro is also a good piece of kit, the new 3.5 version looks pretty good.
Spyware blaster is a good addon to spybot as well.
