Hi folks. I've been using Firebird for the last couple of weeks and I'm very impressed with it. I'm now wondering if any of you guys use Thunderbird as a mail client. If so any opinions and experiences would be greatly appreciated. I'm only asking here because this is one of the few forums I've found which is frequented by people who's opinions I respect. Best advice gets an :apple:

I use Firebird (love it) and I recently changed from Outlook to Thunderbird. Haven't found anything bad about TB, so I can really recommend it to others. It doesn't support Hotmail adresses as a default, but with a tiny little freeware program called 'Hotmail Popper' you can use Hotmail too. (Use Google to find it).

I too use thunderbird because it supports http proxy :). As for looks, plain and good. As for MS outlook 2003, it has really become a memory hog with its fancy shit.
Everyone watch out, MS outlook is about :gasmask:
I agree outlook is total pants (bad?).
I have used thunderbird for months now. Fantastic email program.

One question about Thunderbird: Does it minimize to tray?
Im using Pegasus mail at the moment but it isn't that great IMO. I minimizes to tray though which is a must!

Can I put Firebird and Thunderbird on my system and use them and leave IE and outlook express on my system and change back to them if I don't like firebird and thunderbird? Also should I use the installer from the web site or just download firebird and unzip it in a folder without using the installer? Thanks for any help

Sure you can!
And I would recommend you to always download the installer (for Thunderbird/Firebird), because it installs to the registry as well, and installs in a "proper" way. :)

It would seem that I've just installed it in an "improper" way. Do I need to do something to my registry? I hope not, as that usually ends in  I've had no problems doing it without an installer, touch wood. One more question, can I set up a second E-mail account , just as I had in Outlook Express.

express has always been pants indeed. been meaning to try the bird, now's as good a time as any.
Don't know about Firebird's mail client ability, but at least Opera's has been working very well. So I see that separate mail program doesn't really offer anything special.

Hi folks. Well, it's only been an evening but I've sent and received e-mails with, and without, attachments and all's well. Everything about this program seems very intuitive - if I can understand it, anybody can - and user-friendly. Gives me a warm glow to see Bill G receding into the distance. Linux next.

Im giving it a go too. Took me a few hours to set up though. (And a few hours to get my saved emails and contacts converted)
I miss a few features in it, but I can see in their forum that others miss the same features. So with a little luck minimize to tray (I use TrayIt for that now) and better support for multiple accounts will be added sometime.
Besides that it is great and far better than Outlook and Pegasus mail.

It doesn't by default, but you can download a small program called Thundertray (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=1063659252) that gives Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird) this functionality. Enjoy, it's available Here (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=1063659252)...

You don't really NEED to download the Installer (http://seb.mozdev.org) unless you want to setup registry entries for Thunderbird or Firebird. In Firebird, if you want to install plugins, of which many require a registry entry, you can just download a small registry patch for Firebird. Once you enter in the location of Firebird and it's plugin folder, you just need to merge it with your system registry (which is easier than it sounds, you just need to double click on it and it's added). The patch is available on This Page (http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/phoenixwin.html).
Enjoy! May the Birds be with you! ;)
