Hi, I have been using QCD for a while and I am loving it immensely. I was wondering if anybody would be interested in trying to make a cool looking wwii skin and/or a cool looking "The Shadow" skin. And by "The Shadow" I don't mean one based on the movie, I mean one based on the old pulp magazine and radio show. I'm not sure where to get the resources for the wwii one but a good place to go for the shadow one is:www.theshadowfan.com (http://www.theshadowfan.com) Thanks a lot.

if you find a winamp2 skin you like, it can be converted over

Perhaps it would be better to say `can probably be converted over', as the conversion program isn't 100% successful at the moment, at least not in my experience.

give me a better idea of what you want it to look like. a site with nothing but mag covers isn't much inspiration.

yeah, no kidding
if that's what you want, just make a desktop wallpaper and choose a skin with the right colors. i think there are plenty that would fit

I was thinking maybe something a little science fiction-like; you know what I mean? Kind of metallic and vintage looking with something linking it to the shadow, I don't know what exactly. Does that help? If not, let me know and I'll try to be more specific.

if you could find another skin that is similar to what you're looking for (maybe on winamp's site?), it would help

most of QCD skins are "sci-fi"-ish but i wouldn't say they look very vintage

I looked at winamp skins but couldn't find anything that resembled what I'm looking for. But after thinking about it more I think that I want it to look a lot like the MMD3 skin but maybe instead of buttons it could have old fashioned switches if that's not too hard. Maybe it could look like an old 40's type shortwave radio transmitter. ... Am I making this too difficult? If so I can tone it down. I guess it's pretty hard to make a skin through a forum and still make it to the satisfaction of the person who requested it. Thanks so much for trying to help. :)

Four of the five skins listed by Drew convert reasonably well using WA2QCD beta 4, after renaming them as .wsz files (the one that fails to convert is `Sleepless'). `Butterfly Analog' in particular looks pretty good on its own terms and to my taste, although of course it may not be what a-1wave is looking for.

To fatal error, Yes that's a lot like what I want except instead of gray I would like it to be more of a metallic silver. And like I said before, if it's not too hard I would like it to have switches as well as dials. And let's not forget it has to have something linking it to the shadow; what I don't know.

To drewkeller, I looked at the skins you posted and two of them are what I wanted in a wwii skin, the "WWII-Tank" skin and the "Cockpit" skin, thanks for finding them, but when I downloaded them, the file types changed so that I couldn't convert them. This must be what brian was talking about. Could one of you tell me how to fix this problem? And also, a lot of the switches and stuff on the "WWII-Tank" skin are a lot like what I want on the "Shadow" skin.

These are all Winamp 3 skins, and the converter only works with Winamp 2 skins. In theory that should be end of story, but I found that the skins can be converted by changing the filenames. Just right-click on the skin's icon and then click on Rename on the context menu. Then change the name so that it end in `.wsz' only, thus for example: Cockpit.wsz. Then you should be able to convert it with WA2QCD. If you get stuck I can upload the converted skins to this forum. By the way, when downloaded the WWII Tank skin has the name Autumn for some strange reason. Good luck!

see what you think of these

I checked out your suggestions, downloaded "Mozart", and converted it. One of the best conversions I've had so far! Perfect change to QCD, and the colors are bright enough for my dark desktop. I am using the latest wa2qcd (b4).

To brian, I tried what you said and it still didn't work. :( If you don't mind could you post the converted skins. Thanks.

To t_journeyman, Looked at the skin you suggested. Nice, but not exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks though. :)

I'm uploading the two skins you said you liked. As I mentioned, `Autumn' is what you get when you download `WWII Tank' from the Winamp site.

Thanks brian, I downloaded them both and I like them a lot but is there any way
I can make them bigger, they look small on my screen.

brian

They should be the same size as the original Winamp skins would look on your system. If they are, then I don't think you can make them larger. If they aren't, then something has gone wrong to which I don't know the answer. They look an acceptable size on my system.

i have the same problem with some skins because i run 1200x1600 resolution.
you can make them bigger by scaling all of the bitmaps in some kind of drawing program, but it will decrease the quality of the bitmaps as a side effect. unless you feel like redrawing them (heh). you can get the bitmaps out of the skin file using winzip.

These skins are not winamp 3 skins... they are winamp 2 skins (or what are now known as classic skins...). Since winamp 5 came out all skins on the winamp 5 site (no matter if they are winamp3 or winamp 2 skins) are being given the .wal extension.

I used to really like the Intervideo Winrip player. It sounded great and it had my favorite skin ever - just the right size, just the right shape. Here's a screenshot with the playlist hidden:

http://www.planetburlington.com/winrip1.gif

and one with the playlist showing:

http://www.planetburlington.com/winrip2.gif

(I'm using a very low res, that's why it looks so huge on my screen)

The player had some really bad bugs which made me have to stop using it, but I still miss that skin.

Intervideo stopped updating the player shortly after I downloaded it, and they don't display it on their products page anymore. But the link to download the free version still works:

If someone could convert this skin to a QCD skin, there'd be one very happy nobodaddy in the world!

It may be that it can be easily converted with the winamp-to-QCD utility. WinRip used to support winamp skins, after all. I don't have the .NET framework installed, so I tried to use the online version, but I kept getting "server error"

I zipped up all the skin's files and I'm attaching them to this post.

Thanks skinners, y'all rule!

Wow, thank you Fatal Error. You even got in an equalizer and encoder window - an improvement on the original. I was about to report here that it was looking weird, then I noticed your note about the dev build. I'll install that now and report back in a few minutes.

Fantastic! My favorite skin with the best player! I'm a happy man. Thanks so much for your great work.

I just installed the dev build - it seems to sound better. But I'm using the same MAD plug-in. Hmm...

Well, I'm off to those threads about how to make Real streams play.

Excellent work!

I started playing around with changing the fonts, because the bitmapped font doesn't have accented characters and I play a lot of international music. Though it is kind of a nice font. Fatal, do you have a .ttf of that? Or maybe I already have it. What font is that?

Unfortunately I can't use the skin right now because the dev build won't use Tara, and I play the stream from the BBC World Service like all day while I'm working. So I had to re-instal 4.11, and now I'm kinda bummed. :disappoin:

But I'll probably install the dev build in another directory.

I really hope someone finishes off Paul's Real plug-in...

did setting the font yourself fix the problem?

did setting the font yourself fix the problem?

Yes, I don't have the font you used, but I used Times New Roman of all things, and I'm liking the way it looks in the player window (though it doesn't look so great in the playlist - I'm still trying to figure out which header in charset.ini controls the playlist text : embarrassed smily here : )

The Times font looks suprisingly classy with the very classy little black vis you have at the top of the player window. This is like the great upgrade of WinRip that never happened. I'm still discovering and appreciating all the little touches you made. Very intuitive - everything's right on. I don't see why I'll ever need another skin.

I downloaded some nice freeware fonts today and I may or may not go back inside and fool around sometime.

If you ever do want to work on it more, the only thing I might suggest modifying is to make the playlist a little less wide (if not resizeable). If you see from the original screenshots, the original is a little less wide than the player itself.

But this means nothing - I never keep the playlist open anyway. If you never make another change, I'm sure this is gonna be my permanent QCD skin. So thanks again.

Plus - it looks good with meters!
