Pardon my ignorance, but...

Can MP3 files be compressed (e.g. zipped) for archiving purposes?

I am under the assumption that this would degrade the audio quality. Am I wrong in this?

Please enlighten me!

I don't see any problem with it,It's not like encoding a wav to mp3 as to where it throws out part of the song that it thinks is inaudable to the human ear,in a zip all file information stays intact.

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks.

Heigar--
I went ahead and tried zipping some MP3s... and even under maximum compression there wasn't an appreciable difference in the file size. It hadn't occurred to me that an MP3 is already compressed and as such wouldn't lend itself to further compression. (What can I say, I am a little slow on Sundays) *bonk*

Todd The Kiwi --
Thanks for the links; definitely something to think about going forward. (Though I don't have a portable player that will play any of those formats, so probably not something I am going jump on immediately.)

winamp, qcd and everything else has plugins for them. i'd go for monkey(.ape) first man but yeah you may have a problem squashing pre squashed gears , i'm slow on mondays (it's 9:15 am here on monday 19th ) you don't need a portable player either man :D
