Hi Folks. What 5 albums would you take to a deserted island. Try not to make it the last 5 you've listened to. Mine would be, in no particular order - Mike Oldfield/Amarok, The KLF/White Room, Air/10,000Hz Legend, Little Death Orchestra/1bc and Queensryche/Operation Mindcrime.

Hmm... these aren't necessarily my "favorites", it's more that these are what I would find consoling if I were actually stuck somewhere...
(also in no particular order)
Steve Reich - Music for 18 Musicians (First Recording)
Glenn Gould - Bach: Goldberg Variations (First Recording)
Bulgarian Voices and Huun Huur Tu - Fly, Fly, My Sadness
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
Nick Drake - Way to Blue
Todd:
Have you ever heard Ghazal? They do a cross between Indian and Persian improvisation. The main two members play sitar and kamancheh(a Persian violin), plus they have a tabla player. Great stuff...

can't say as i have man i'm looking for some now , any particular song/album that you recommend ? do you think it's odd that i dig death metal AND sitar music ? a lot of people i know over here think it's weird that i have pungent stench and mortician right next to my ravi and floyd etc...???? also my top 5 is a bit wrong because the drum and bass that i dig is mainly 12" single non cd stuff , but yeah ghazal hunting i go

If you think that is odd, then I'm crazy cuz I can have on my playlist some tracks of Bethoven and my old pal Wolfgang together with some "HIM" and the next couple of tracks could be the latest dancehall hit and then a twist of metallica and on top of it I could then listen to Styxx or REO.
I really listen to all kinds of music... :p

Ghazal's As Night Falls On The Silk Road is the disk that hooked me, but their first three albums are all wonderful. (I haven't heard the fourth one.)

Why should people only listen to one kind of stuff? To me, that's what would be odd... ;)
fatal error

plover, judging by your selection you should really try "Little Death Orchestra" - the title can be quite misleading. If you like Steve Reich you'll love this. IMOH listening to the same genre of music all the time is stultifying.

I DL'ed the track on their web page (Nothing Room). They seem quite cool. Thanks, I'll have to look for this.

Nope, no resemblance at all... :) (I DL'ed the track on their page too (Supervision)... Some interesting stuff going on, but for metal, Dream Theater is more my style. )
For a literal disharmonic orchestra, I suggest a piece called "Photoptosis" by the composer Bernd Alois Zimmermann. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find recordings of this, but I've long suspected that (at least some) metal fans would appreciate it.

cool i'll try in earnest to uncover the no doubt 'disharmonic' Photoptosis although i'm sure it will prove difficult

Hmm... if the whole thing was plated with solar cells, you'd have to figure out some way to supend it so that both the top and bottom would get light. Then you'd have to lie down and stick your head under it in order to see the screen. At least your face would be protected from sun-burn and the glare would be off the screen... :D

In fact, id even go as far as creating my favourite music using well sized coconuts, 2 sticks, a string, and some animal skins and construct my very home made drum set :D That should solve the energy problem
hmm, how basic can you get??

Then your music will be limited to "bass and drums" but hey it's a nice idea. At least if you can't play, then the animal skins could feed you.

Roxy Music - Avalon
Tears For fears - Songs From The Big Chair
Stevie Wonder - Songs In the Key Of Life
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
Christopher Franke - Babylon 5 Soundtrack

Interesting...and encouraging. You're not going to believe this but I also own a vinyl Japanese pressing of Lotus. I was not, however, aware that there were only 500 copies pressed. Renee Fleming is an Opera singer who has one of the most beautiful Operatic voices of all time. The album I mentioned is an excellent place to start...even if you think you don't like Opera. I love Opera but I NEVER listen to it. I am one of those who feel that Opera, like Ballet, is something that has to be experienced in full...meaning on stage. Listening to Opera and thinking it is Opera is akin to listening to the soundtrack of [insert name of movie] and thinking that you are watching the movie. Obviously I do listen to Opera singers...but I consider a 'recital' to be in a category of its own.
