You shouldn't have been on the phone mate. You have no God-given right to endanger the lives of others. You wouldn't get away with that dangerous behaviour here.
Same in Australia. I was blown away by people in Canada using phones left right and centre.
However ... if the country / state / area has no laws against it, then it really isn't any place of ours / hers / theirs to complain.
It's like complaining about someone driving with a BAC of 0.7. In some places that's okay. Over here, that's bad with a capital bee. But if we said just because it's not against the law doesn't mean it's okay, it's still dangerous and you're an idiot ... well, no-one would jump on people here with a BAC of 0.3. But there was consideration of lowering it to 0.2. Does that mean that people who find a BAC of 0.3 to be high / dangerous are justified in calling driving aussies with BACs of 0.3 hooligan drunk drivers? Arguably, the answer is no. Because cultural norms (shaped by laws) find that acceptable here.

Stupid is as stupid does. Just because there isn't a law against it doesn't make it a wise thing to do. I'm guessing there's no law against sticking your knob in an electrical socket, doesn't mean it's a cool thing does it?

Doesn't mean people should follow you around and road / penis socket rage at you no? :P Because then THAT is breaking the law... in most countries ;)

This was somewhat a test.
All things being equal, you guys don't actually / positively know if I was lackadaisical in my driving, or a model citizen. You don't know if I was in heavy traffic or fairly light, except for my word. You don't know my, or her blood alcohol level. You don't care why her hand was off the wheel gesturing at me, or how long prior to that she was adjusting her radio, or TOMTOM. Was she slapping her kids in the back seat. Or was she nearly ran off the road by my swerving and erratic driving?
The only thing you have is my side (which this time is pretty accurate).
My video if you want to see the boring thing, is of her after this incident. Also another reason not to show...I don't know if her license plate would reveal who she is. I'm still a big believer in the santity of privacy. Just like when certain someones here revealed PMs from others to all of us. It's just not right in my book.
So, now back to my comment about "test". I wanted to see which ones here sided with whom.
So overwhelmingly (with one, possibly two exceptions), the consensus is Vigilantism wins out over what turns out to be a legal and innocent act.
Are all you here "saints" when driving? I obviously see stones thrown in my direction. But that's understandable, since driving safely OVERALL is what you are thinking (I assume). But it's funny that in her case (cutting in front of me narrowly missing my bumper, and endangering the life of the driver in front of me, not to mention her own kids. Her eyes and hands off her wheel, or simply offending others on the road) it's OK how she drives.
Below is a chart (not complete, so sorry if I left your country out) on drinking ages. The asterisk is for exceptions, e.g. Germany isn't age 16 in all areas of the country.
If I were to be found drinking a beer at the age of 19 in the USA, is that OK? It may depend. Is it OK to have someone offend me because I'm mowing my own lawn with a push mower while drinking at any age? hmmmm. :cheerful: That's the first I've ever thought of that question...I've got to try that. ;)
Finally, what if I were found to be drinking a Coke at age 16 or 21 or 44 and driving. Has anyone here done that?:ponder: Has anyone here tried running that person holding a Coke can and driving, off the road?

All I can say about that is if someone calls me I pickup my cell and talk. It's forbidden here so I use the speakerphone; I need to get a handsfree set with Bluetooth.

It's probably for the best that the US has the dinking limit at 21 for most states. It would come to no good changing that. It's at 18 in the Netherlands btw and it's baked into the culture and everyone knows that drink n drive is baaaaaad.
PS. I don't drive a car. No idea when I will make the change. Maybe only when it become absolutely necessary for me. This is my stand against climate change.

I think I'm finally getting you. "God given right" LOL.
Don't flatter yourself mate, you have no idea.
No matter how you dress it driving whilst using a phone is wrong. I've been driving professionally for something like 20 years now and seriously mate, phones kill. Do I therefore agree with the SUV maniac (and planet killer)? No I don't, of course not. However I have a sense I know you therefore I care, about you. Her? Not on my radar.
For the record I think it's not the actual phone that's the problem anyway, it's the distance conversation that's the distraction. There was research done to support this theory but I'm honestly knackered right now. It is out there though, I think it was done in The Netherlands if you'd like to look yourself. I used to drive long distance buses doing airport transfers and it was imperative that I was in contact with base. First it was just using a phone to my ear as there was no other option at that time. I hated it. I like to think I'm a pretty good driver (like the vast majority of males) but I confess to totally losing concentration whilst trying to focus on ultimately inane conversations with people who weren't in the "Here & now". Then we switched to hand-free. Better? Hand on heart, not really. Conversing with a passenger in the same vehicle is one thing, speed and road circumstances affect both and so the conversation tends to be dictated by it. But when the other conversant isn't in that space? That can lead to disaster.
I note over here they're now talking of prosecuting people who knowingly phone someone who's driving.
WHAT?
09-18-2008, 02:19 AM
Over here (hear hehehe) I know some places are saying Blue tooth is OK, but Rory is right about the conversation being still the biggest issue. You can't regulate for one type person if you don't regulate for all unfortunately.
I may have missed an exit or two in my time due to talking. But that's true for talking to someone in my car as well. Outside of that, personally I am visual first. I keep my distance, as well as never slowing then speeding up erratically while talking. You gotta love those a-hole in the left lane on a phone just cruising down the freeway.
But for me. I miss parts of conversations at times when on the cell. But that's because driving is first!!! Sounds cut and dry (I know) because it only takes one stupid incident because of being on the phone. I have been driving for my work as well (not a chauffeur mind you) but have logged over 2 million miles easily. Probably 2.5 million. But whatever. That doesn't mean I'm a good driver. But I am the type to yeild, stay out of the left lane on freeways unless I'm actually passing someone (No matter the speed). I've always driven with my lights on at dusk, dawn, and light rain. I bet 60% of these local drivers don't unless it's dark. And SOOO many never use their turn signal. It's like it's too childish or a bother or something. I'm no Hippocrate, I use it all the time without thinking about even.
About the phone... I can only say, I save my company a whole person's pay salary by being able to conduct business on the phone between service calls. I'm Mr. tech support on the road. I've been doing it since the early car phones (you know, those big CB radio looking suckers with a cord and handset).
BTW I do have a headset as well. This day I decided against it.
Now... If I was offending her or reckless about her, then OK I see her point. She shames me, I'll feel bad, "Just put down the weapon then we can talk" yada yada yada. I just didn't get her immediate point though. If anything I actually kept up my speed when seeing her run up my butt. (or so she didn't ram up it! LOL). She didn't even notice (or care) Even so, she took her 'bad day" out on me. She may have had someone in her family effected by a driver with one in the past or something. So she thought she'd risk her, and her kids lives because of it.:cheeky:

Two points are being addressed regarding cell phone usage whilst driving. One of the conversants is missing the more fundamental of the two points.
If you want to drive, drive. If you want to talk on a phone, don't drive.

I think this is quite pertinent. I assume it's quite legal to drive on speaker phone over in the UK? If so, would you say that someone is a stupid idiot for doing so, given it's about / almost as dangerous?

Nonsense. 'Want' vs. 'need'
Driving is likely the most dangerous thing any of us do, as it is for the majority of people in an industrialized society. Driving accidents in the 20th century killed more people than Hitler or Stalin or Pol Pot. Driving accidents have killed more people than guns have.
Humans do not multi-task well. Being an automaton at the wheel greatly increases the likelihood that you will kill someone.

The sad ignored fact that in modern life everyone has to be available 24/7... Yes, indeed. Every other month I'm on call (24/7). And you know about my 8-5 job. I like my job. I do it well. I like driving (unlike a lot of people). I don't chat needlessly. I'm on the phone nearly daily while driving, but only near 3-4% of the actually driving time on average. The other percentage is mixed... comedy, music and sport talk radio. Once in a while I actually watch the road as well. It's my oasis.
I can take my time, or be progressive. I'm never too slow, or way to aggressive.
I was just saying to a fellow worker the other day at my office that I wish I could take public transportation to the office daily. But that not gonna happen anytime soon. I leave from home to go to my first call many days. But more important to me, I home from service calls the last thing of the day. We're somewhat loose here.
Being an automaton at the wheel greatly increases the likelihood that you will kill someone.
Or one self!
Like most people's disposition, I trust myself behind the wheel more than being a passenger. This isn't taking account the "other drivers on the road" scenario. That be a whole 'nother worry.
It's fortunate I don't live in a metropolitan area such as DC, Atlanta Chicago, L.A. I'd probably move out, and work outside of those places.

It wasn't all so bad with the HD afterall, some of the data I kept also on my laptop. Not everything, but most stuff we manage to recover and recreate. Thank God I've also copied the generated map.

I know there are specialized companys that can recover data even after drive being on fire or worse, but my boss is trying to cut costs everywhere he can.

That reminds me of an interview/test I had right after graduating electronics school . The test consisted of electronic circuits, and components, measuring, mathematics, trig like stuff etc. The interview came after the testing..., and the dude interviewing me said all my diode questions (answers) were wrong, and backwards. (Positive, and negative thinking was wrong he said). So I argued my point to no avail.
Looking back... he may have been testing my ability to communicate in front of a customer. A social skills test!
I was right about the diodes but flunked the argument about them. I didn't get the job. What a dirty trick on a young buck (green behind the ears).
I swear I aced the test part though.

Oh, and there are no mods here now, from what I hear, ever since the swap to and from the test site.
Eh? The mods are the same as they were before:
http://www.quinnware.com/forum/showgroups.php
Note however that there's some boards we don't have access to. Like I can't delete spam on the plugins or skins board, and none of us save for Paul & Matt have mod access on the Quintessential Website boards.
This afternoon, there was a particularly aggressive spammer on the boards. I happened to log in while he was still going, and he'd already probably a dozen identical spam threads across various boards. I started cleaning up the ones I have mod access to, but it just kept coming, and a lot of it was on boards I don't have access to. So I decided to try out this board's 'give infraction' function on a few of his posts. Within a few minutes, Paul was on the board, and started cleaning house. I deleted maybe 10 posts, Paul deleted probably triple that. He was in & out without a word.

i have to rant because the more i think about i, the more i get pissed off.
just so you know, i work at a TV station. i am Master Control. i other words i keep the station on air (i try my best at least).
i came in today and there was a paper laying on the table. on it, it reads, "DO NOT AIR The Osbourne's". for those out of state (or those who don't know who are in the states). Fox is planning to air a variety show of sorts starring the Osbourne's. as in OZZY!! yes, they are back!!!
well it turns out our station manager, who as far as i know, does not own this station, she just manages it. she does not approve of this show, that comes from Fox Network and she plans to preempt it with some syndication. i found out she is a hardcore, church going Republican and from what i know, this is about the only reason she is doing this. she does not approve, so she does not want anyone to see it.
imagine going to the movies to see a movie only to find the night manager decided not to sell tickets to this movie because "she" finds it inappropriate. they do not own the theater, but they are censoring what you watch!! how!!??!!??

Wasn't there yet another program that a lot of stations refused to air lately? I can't remember what it was. In her case she probably has to answer to her fellow constituents. She's think'n she should practice more to what is preached... in that I mean people complain all the time about mindlessness of the media and Hollywood. So if she airs THAT, it would be hypocritical of her personal life I bet. But she'll play the "general public does not want to watch it" card, and the "ratings will drop if she does play it".

This sucks. Who the hell does she think she is to make a decision that effects so many people. This reminds of the post about I made about the 30 clerics that feel they know what is best for the rest of the country. update:
she has decided to air it, but only because it would be a hassle. she thought it was a one night only show. when the traffic manager approached her about it being a weekly thing she changed her mind. she wanted us to not air it tonight and then let it air in the weeks after, but the traffic manager talked her out of it. it didn't make sense to block it one night and not the rest. we are still pulling the Family Guy contract when it is up though (syndication only).
still don't care about the show honestly, but i feel a little better about her not being able to control things she shouldn't have control of. i did ask someone what was her reason she told Fox and it was basically she didn't want to air it. i was also told other Gray Television stations were also doing the same thing, so it was company wide, not just us.

Rex_Mundi_Incarnit
04-11-2009, 01:41 AM
I once got a generic comment by my dentist that i need them removed. I refused. There is no single reason why they must be removed when you have all your teeth already and they are in good shape. To get them removed just so that possibly, maybe in the future one could go bad is just a waste of time/money. It's like saying to a woman 'you should get your breasts removed because in the possible future you might get breast cancer'.
I havent seen a dentist in a long time now...

04-11-2009, 05:05 AM
no, he's a good guy. i trust him. mine are actually in bad condition. it just hasn't got to the point of problems. i did have one episode many years ago and was on antibiotics, but after i finished them the issue went away and hasn't been back. besides, it wouldn't be him doing it anyway. it would be another place altogether.
hedge
04-11-2009, 05:09 AM
I had mine rather forcefully removed... in that I didn't get a choice in the matter ;)
Broke my jaw in 3 places in a car accident, which had forced one of the wisdom teeth out of its socket and halfway into my cheek. So they pulled that out, and thought hey what the hell, lets get these others out whilst we're here. I figure its all for the best, as they're really only a horrible evolutionary leftover anyway, and this way I didn't have to put up with a separate case of swelling :D

THis has got to be one of the worst weeks of my life. First it turns out i cant do my experiment because the container is too narrow for the specimen. Then the furnace breaks. Then i found out pizzahut took $410 off my credit card several weeks ago and charged me twice in a following transaction. Last but not least, some colleagues at work appear to be ignoring me and i dont know why... Also i was going out for dinner yesterday but i couldn't remember where and a colleague who was going didnt bother to check with me and had no mobile phone that night.

I'm just going to bitch at myself here. Ive been sloppy in my (lab)work at uni lately and my supervisor is getting concerned. I know it and at the same time I cant help it. It's so frustrating! Maybe im getting too distracted from all the people around me and should start saying no to some of the day trips, sport events and nights out.

Maybe it's time re prioritize. It's hard to find that balance between work and play. Possibly you are a little burned out on your work? Try to find another aspect of your work that will get you inspired again.

i'm about this close to removing windows
there are 2 reasons to keep it here [forget about the games i have that i never play]
i help out at a 'message board' [for dummies] and often need to have a look to get my facts straight
QCD/qmp
that's it, two pathetic reasons to keep windows installed.
it's largely unappreciated

I'm so sad... my PS3 decided to crap out (blinking red light)
Checked some forums and stuff, for suggestions/ideas (without much hope, I was familiar with this LED code) none worked, I'd need to send it for repairs or swap, however I bought it on the US in December 2007, warranty gone by 4 months almost, and with shipping costs and time without my PS3 it's out of the question.
I'll give the local Sony dealer a shot tomorrow... I hope it is not too expensive. I will sell my brother or something to get a new one if it comes down to that...
Edit: On top of that... the new versions are not backwards compatible with PS2 games (but can play PS1 games *WTF* ??? ), lack the card reader and is 2 USB ports short. I'm even more depressed now...

Gosh, that really sucks man. Any idea why it failed? Overheating maybe?
How much warranty did you get? 1 year only?
Hanzo
05-04-2009, 02:55 AM
It comes standard with 1 year warranty. The code doesn't really say exactly what failed. It simply "needs service" according to the manual. I hope the repairs are not too expensive.
Getting a new one would be disastrous since they decided to cut backwards compatibility and I have about 2 dozen PS2 games that are in pristine conditions that I play often. I sold my PS2 a while ago and don't feel it's right to buy a new PS2 when the PS3 had it to begin with.
Sony has screwed royally this time... In their forums there are dozens of threads about bringing back the backwards compatibility. I hope that down the road they make a top of the line PS3 with the backwards compatibility (as they had before)
Sony Service was closed today so I basically watched TV all day. Not really fun IMO.
OK, it being Cinco de Mayo and all, I thought I'd go out and get some tacos from the little Mexican-run joint near where I live. Usually this place is awesome. Tonight the tacos were seriously cold.
