Ahh but b69 has a crossfader that doesn't break... so problem solvered.

using the video plug-in and the crossfader sometimes makes it loose sync, perhaps if the video-plug in automatically switched to use the direct sound or something

Number 2 gets my vote. Even better if it only mutes the player volume, not the Windows sound scheme.
