Yep, what's your favorite type of music to blast with Quintessential (or anything else, for that matter)? What about your favorite singers and/or groups?

I like alternative/hard rock/nu-metal, and other stuff in that area. My favorite bands include Linkin Park, Staind, and Evanescence.

Well I can hear almost everything and my current MP3 collection proves it
(5000 MP3's and counting). I like classic rock and rock. Also some of the new bands like Linkin Park and Evanecense, and the old bands like Scorpions and REO or Foreigner. Also latin music, salsa, merengue, pop, rap, trance and electronic music. But my real favorite is classic rock.

The only thing I can't stand (I even listen to opera and symphonies :p ) is country. I hate country music. But that is my personal opinion.

I mostly listen to rock/pop from the 60's and 70's, but also some various bands from more current date. Plus some hardrock/metal.

Well it’s mostly Rock/Metal/Gothic I listen to. Actually I have my MP3/Ogg collection divided in those 3 folders so I can choose one whole folder depending on my mood.
Rock: Chris Cornell is one of my favourite artists!! His solo album Euphoria Morning is one of the best albums ever IMO. Besides that it’s Live, Lifehouse, Kashmir (The best Danish band!) and I’m a big fan of Sting. (And there are a few others too in that folder)

Metal: Of course Metallica but some new ones like Linkin Park, Staind, A Perfect Circle, Rammstein and a lot others too.

Gothic: I have fallen in love with metal with female lead vocal (a couple of years before Evanescence became famous) so Within Temptation and Lacuna Coil is what I listen to most of the time at the moment. It’s great that Evanescence has had so much success.

Now if just the folks at Audioscrobbler.com would have hurried I wouldn't have had to write all this... :(

Edit: I cant believe I forgot System Of A Down... :o

While I don't have any real criteria on genre per say, the one thing that defines my music tastes is that I only listen to female artists! I don't really like too heavy stuff though but I am starting to like the few Evanecense MP3s I downloaded the other day...

My favorite group is Alisha's Attic, 2 british sisters who are unfortunately not known here.

Other than that, I like Tori Amos, Melanie Doane, Amy Studt*, Siobhan Donaghy*, Tegan And Sara, Taty** (Pronounced Tatoo), Damhnait Doyle, Dido, Avril Lavigne, Jewel, Lene Marlin*, Lili Fatale**, Maren Ord, Natalie Imbruglia and many others (The first level of the quicktrack menu currently has 24 sub-menus, ~37hr playlist)

*: Not known in this country.
**: Not in english.

Almost everything... except Nu-Metal, teeny-bop-pop, new Rap (old skool is cool :p ) and Country/Bluegrass.

A little off topic: Metal is good. I'm glad Metallica headed away from Load/Reload. Yuck.

I play techno alot. (not the trashy stuff you usually hear on non-intenet radio) Some of my favorite artists are Gary D., DJ Snowman, DJ Valium and DJ Yan. Then some of the music made by DJ Promo is good. It's just so damn nice to put on a nice techno megamix and then play it with about 20dBs less volume than my amplifier can handle without clipping (outputs ~80dB), with full DSP processing (it sounds different every time, since I tweak it all the time) and then just sit in my living room for 1 hour or so (depends on the megamix), listening.

Sometimes however I play something completely different like hard rock, metal, pop or classical music, for example. But not that often and not that long.

Funny, the radio station I listen hardly plays my favorites at all. I normally only listen when I'm trying to fall asleep at night, but I've not heard Evanescence on the radio in days, and I might hear Linkin Park about every other night.

i also like to listen to TV/movie themes and soundtracks.

i typically do not care for country, and definitely dont like rap. the current pop scene is pretty lame as well.

Hmm.. I guess I'll just pick samples from the stuff I have MP3's of. While it's not necessarily representative of my favorites (since most of my stuff is still on CD), it's more or less representative of the range of stuff I listen to.

Mostly 70s rock and progressive:
LedZep, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Yes, Genesis, Rush Jethro tull, Cream, Brand X, rolling stones, ....

Late 90s black, death and doom metal:
Emperor, Satyricon, Immortal, Opeth, Dimmu Borgir, Katationa, Kataklysm, ...

Blues and jazz are always good:
Robert Johnson, Al di meola, Stanley clarke, Willi dixon, John lee hooker, miles davis, Chick Corea, ...

I found the 80s to be the most boring period.

Well, right now I am listening to Fiona Apple's first album which I just received yesterday.

I like "alternative" music (real alternative, not the corporate alternative that has been prevalent since the 90s.) I like electronic, ambient, gothic/darkwave, alt-folk... I don't suppose I have one favorite genre, though. I think the eighties were the best decade for music. I love new wave & post-punk.

Nice to see people mentioning The Church and Shriekback (two of my very favorites.)

What I'm mostly listening to:

Genres: Progressive/Black/Death Metal

Bands: Opeth, Dream Theater, Children of Bodom, Tool, The Mars Volta (among others)

I'm essentially open to all kinds of music, but at this point I find that those genres above and corresponding bands offer me the most satisfying experience. During the early 90's I was really into rap and R&B. Times have changed, and so has music, for better or worse.

Man that was some radical change :)

I listen to almost every kind of metal, from progressive to black (minus nu metal and hardcore and alikes).

Bands I like include: Moonspell, Dark Tranquility, Iced Earth, Nightwish, Dream Theater, After Forever... (continues to list dozens and dozens of bands).

Death - Dark Tranquillity (but I dislike In Flames), At The Gates...

Septic Flesh, Rotting Christ, Kovenant (ex-Covenant)...

Some classic heavy as Manowar, Grave Digger, Blind Guardian, Judas Priest, Iced Earth...

Black - Dimmu Borgir, Cadaveria & Opera IX, Cradle of Filth (he-he), Lux Occulta...

Goth Rock - like Inkubus Sukkubus, Folk Rock - In Extremo, Subway to Sally, Hagalaz Runadance, Ataraxia, Summoning, Haggard, Therion, Tanzwut...

You live in Montreal or was that one big road trip to come and see them?

I live in Montreal too (Longueuil actually, 5 mins subway ride under the river)...

But very few of my faves come here (Or have released their albums in Canada even!) The only times that Alisha's Attic, Amy Studt or Siobhan Donaghy played a gig in Montreal was in my dreams hehe!

About the whole Pop vs Metal debate. There is what I call good pop and bad pop. The bad pop is the stuff that gets overplayed on the radio, that the singers are not really involved in the music really (Don't play any instruments and/or don't write the lyrics) or worst of them all, winners of some dumb reality show.

What I call good pop is what is more or less the same kind of music, but the arists write their own songs, play their own instruments. Play on the radio a little or fail in the charts because they are too good to be very popular and/or are just not known in this country like the 3 I mentionned 2 paragraphs ago.

My main favourite is Hard Rock and bands like AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, but I'll listen to just about anything. Although I do find it hard to enjoy most RAP stuff.

A sample of my listening for one day could contain
* random classical tracks
* AC/DC
* John Denver
* Don Williams
* Hayseed Dixie
* Great Big Sea
* Offspring
* Sum 41
* Good Charlotte
* Rancid
* Sex Pistols

As long as I'm posting, I may as well throw up some of my favourite bands... I mostly listen to '70s punk and glam, but a few other alt styles can be found... Some '80s.
- The Velvet Underground
- Iggy Pop
- The Sex Pistols
- The Ramones
- The Dead Kennedys (Eh...)
- Siouxsie and the Banshees
- Bauhaus
- The Cure
- David Bowie <3
- The Clash
- Billy Idol (so pretty...)
- The New York Dolls
- Lou Reed (solo crap...)
- Joan Jett and the Blackhearts

But how about the bands that I hate? I'll only throw up the ones I hate with a passion...
- Avril Lavigne makes the top of my list. Hate, hate, HATE the girl. David "Bow"ie, indeed. "People are like, oh, she doesn't know who the Sex Pistols are... I don't need to know that, that's old stuff, right?" Gaagghh.
- Linkin Park. Is it just me, or do all their songs sound the SAME?
- Good Charlotte. Just because I can.
- Evanescence. "Goth-rock" my butt.

Afrocelts - Seed

Govi - Guitar Odyssey
Karunesh - Nirvana Cafe
Michael Brook - Cobalt Blue
Ottmar Liebert - Poets & Angels
Patrick Ball - Celtic Harp, Volume IV, O'Carolans Dream
The Rippingtons - Let It Ripp
Thievery Corporation - The Richest Man In Babylon

You see, I do almost all kinds of music. Except Death Metal. I rather like my ears and a wall of distorted noise just doesn't do it for me. :D

I think you've mistaken the majority of Death Metal for Nu-Metal. :D Do you listen to Melodic Death Metal? Cause the only thing distorted in that is the person's voice when the growling occurs. Otherwise, all of the instrumental notes are discernable and quite melodic.

My (current) favorite Melodic Death Metal band: Opeth.

I myself like a lot of music styles. For example, blues/jazz/R&B, (Soft) rock, (melodic/vocal) Trance, and many popular artists in Europe (esp. italian ones for i have lived for 6 years in Turin, Italy).

Some of my favourite artists are:
-Radiohead
-Moby
-Paolo Conte
-Zucchero
-Phil Collins
-Eric Clapton
-Enya (LOTR!)
-Air
-Sting
And many trance mixes from e.g. DJ Tiesto (Dutch guy!) and DJ Doboy.

Lately I have this minor obsession with white label dance remixes of various things. It's just kind of fascinating to see what some unknown remixer will do to a song that many people consider an untouchable classic.

There's also my own material as well, when I bother to sit down and convert some stuff to MP3.

Predominantly, I like most electronica, leaning towards experimental/nu breaks/hard drum tracks/hard techhouse.
