View Full Version : QMP and 2008
Merry Christmas! I hope everyone had a heartfelt 2007.
'Tis that time of year to put our rampant purchasing to a rest and actually use our gifts, all the while listening to endless countdowns of every topic on the radio.
And above all else, it's time to complain about the lack of QMP releases.
Since August I have been trying to get QMP 5.0 released. But growing a family and performing at my job took my focus away. Here we are, end of 2007 and QMP is languishing.
But I bring good news. A new website is staged. A new skin is readied. A new build is set. We *have* been working on it. And I will get it all out some day when I decide to hit this big red button on my desk.
I apologize for not being active on the boards for the past few months. But I have to say, all of you have been absolutely fantastic in your support of QMP. The stats for the website never waver. The downloads never drop.
Once Christmas vacation is over, early in the new year, I will hit the red button and all the work will be released. 2008 will be a very good year for QMP.
Take care all. Have a great holiday!

Paul, will the new site be validated by W3C (http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.quinnware.com&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=0) by any chance? That would rock! XHTML 1.1 strict awesomeness :P

Psst! Rex! There's no such thing as "XHTML 1.1 Strict". It's just 'XHTML 1.1' - there's no 'Transitional' version of it. Also, the XHTML 1.1 spec requires that it be sent with an XML mime-type (rather than HTML). And since Internet Explorer does not support pages with XML mime-types at all, there's really no sense in using XHTML 1.1 on public websites unless you're doing something server-side to only send that doctype to browsers that support it. (XHTML 1.0 does allow an HTML mime-type, and thus is much more useful for here & now.)
Rex_Mundi_Incarnit
12-28-2007, 04:39 AM
I know all that Toe. I was just adding the word strict to emphasize clean webcoding but I dont care if it will be good ol standard html. XML is still ftw tho :P
Aye, if a site chooses HTML 4.01 Strict as its validation target, I have no problem with that. In fact, I would consider it preferable over sending otherwise-clean XHTML 1.1 with an HTML mime-type.

I REALLY hope you will include .FLAC and .CUE support OUT OF THE BOX.
That is the only way I can make all my friends "make the switch" - by telling them to download it, and install it... None of them wants to go through the extra fuzz of getting plugins, it's too arcane for non-technical (but really cool) people :)
MAKE THE QUINNWARE VERSATILE!!!
btw, have been loving this software since march 2004. But none of my friends want to have a go at it because it doesn't support enough formats...:(
Thank you for all the work, really looking forward to the next version.

Push, push the red button. Make it GREEEEEN :)
Oh, how long can trusty Cadet Paul hold out? How can he possibly resist the diabolical urge to push the button that could launch his battle-ready player? Will his tortured mind give in to it's uncontrollable desires? Can he withstand the temptation to push the button, that even now, beckons him ever closer? Will he succumb to the maddening urge to eradicate the current websitesite design, at the mere push of a single button? The beautiful, shiny button! The jolly, candy-like button! Will he hold out, folks? Can he hold out?

Ah, bit late here.:o
A very merry christmas and a good 2008 to all of you.:)
And thanks, Paul, for the update. Can't wait.
I would like the site to be w3c valid, but not xhtml2.0. That's ridiculous. It has silly restrictions, like you're not allowed to use an inline-level tag like <a> outside of a block-level tag (like <p>). So you have to make a new paragraph for every tiny link.
Anyway, xhtml1.0 will do. XHTML1.0 is basically just clean html: You can't make stupid errors anymore, and you have to close your tags. Otherwise it's pretty much the same. It's only with xhtml1.1 and 2.0 that the big changes come, imho.

The XHTML 2.0 standard is still in draft stage, of course you shouldn't be using it on live websites. :ditsy:

i fully understand what "real life" means, especially in the context of such a big software project. sometimes you don't even get to code for weeks - at least for me that was the case several times. my last such "pause" was several months long. i don't want to sound unfriendly (and please forgive me if i do as i'm not very skilled with the english language), but i sometimes have the feeling that it is sometimes forgotten around here that paul does not get paid for qmp, and i think that living the real life should always be more important than coding.
i really like qmp and i am looking forward to the next beta release or the final release, whichever it may be. keep up the great work!

Dunno about Blink 182, but Stockholm Syndrome is a song by Muse. They're excellent!
But maybe it's a cover. Wouldn't be their first.
Come to think of it, that screenshot is probably older than Muse.:ponder:
Hmm, some research showed that they're both from 2003, but they're independent songs with the same title.
"Quintessential" is a song by "maestro fresh wes".

Ah, but two things.
I'm running qmp here. Now. There's nothing that says I can't continue to run it until I find something better. If it doesn't get updated for 2 years, I'm not actually forced to use something else. I know Roj has said this before, but I actually agree.
Second of all, my systems at home are transitioning slowly to linux, and they aren't, as of yet, wining anything, so I'm not actually running qmp at home. I do still have to find something that's at least not sucky. Everything I have used so far is sucky. I have not looked hard, however.

Amarok mate. Next big thing on the linux box. Major update is coming soon plus a port to windows. I can't wait.
Amarok has its good points, but it also fails in some ways.
Replaygain, some form of configurable audio backend...
The audio backend thing: anyone know much about Linux's audio backend/ ends. All I know is Alsa is the go these days, with OSS being considered rather outdated?
Amarok is using Xine. Xine then hooks into what Alsa again? So Xine is actually doing the decoding?
Bah, I can generally make sense of things on linux if i troll about the internet enough, but this has me rather lost.
Beyond that, is there any way to do some resampling if needed, how do I set output format/ bitrate?

Sorry to be slightly off topic here, but for Windows I suggest trying out AIMP. It's a nice player with excellent sound quality. It does have a library, but its (library) interface is somewhat lacking. For me personnaly it does not matter, since I stopped cataloging my music anyway. Like foobar it has tabbed playlist interface, but main window is much sleeker. I would say it has definitely replaced Winamp as my main music player. It does not support video btw. I've been using the same qcd (4.51) since 2002.
I find that hard to believe, given that in 2002, QCD was only at version 3.40. :cross-eye
But think of it this way: Quintessential Player version 3.51 was released in April 2003. Version 4.0 was released just a few months later in August 2003. Version 4.51 came another few months later, in May 2004. 4.51 was the last official release. We went from a few months between official releases to over four years.

...and to have a player I know is still being developed. There are no news since the late 2007 message about an early 2008 release, and that kind of worries me. I really want this player to be devloped further. I have not found any player that can match Qmp. So Paul..... please, give us a word on what's going on. Should we still be patient, or should we start to look for other players?

It might be political. The only thing I remember Paul saying that was holding the release up was he was waiting on Matt to do the web-site. Also, he has found another interest that he told us about not too long ago and he is a family man now so maybe he just doesn't have the time to mess with the player anymore. I really hate it because I haven't found another player that I like as good as I like QMP.
Maybe he will let us know something soon so we can decide what we are going to do.

Imagine work in progress updates like this for qmp. Wow! What a world that would be! :coffee:
After getting everyone used to a rapid cycle with new builds every 2-7 days since our beta launch, it has been 6 weeks since we pushed the last update. WTF? Such a slow development cycle is unlike us so we wanted to give you a quick update on what’s going on. I’m sure you are all eager for the new build, as we are! The upcoming release is taking longer to wrap up because it is a pretty major release. Since our public beta launch on March 20th, the #1 complaint we have heard about Digsby is that it uses too much RAM. Our explanation has always been that we released the beta without optimizing and that we would take some time to do it once the major bugs were fixed.
When the last build was pushed we decided that it was time to buckle down and get to work on the optimizations we’ve been promising! The goal was to significantly lowering RAM usage and also to improve the responsiveness of the GUI. Many people have reported that Digsby is taking 70MB - 110MB during normal use. If you leave Digsby running for several days without restarting, the memory leaks caused RAM usage to climb to 150MB+ on some systems. That is completely unacceptable by our standards!
This has been a massive undertaking and we finally have the new version built. We are testing it internally. Because this was such a major change in architecture we introduced some new bugs. We are pushing as fast as we can to fix these so we can get it out to you guys. We don’t have an exact ETA since there is a lot of uncertainty in guessing how long it will take to fix a particular bug and we are still finding new ones. However, rest assured that we are working as hard as we can to finish as quickly as possible!
RAM and performance are not the only things we have been working on. This build also introduces a ton of bug fixes and enhancements. If you have been experiencing a bug, chances are that the upcoming build will fix it. We closed over 100 tickets in our project management system since the last build! As always, we will list all the changes in the Change Log when the update goes live. For those of you who are new to Digsby, it will update the next time you launch it after an update goes live. You don’t need to download or run anything.

As to Digsby as well as working on reducing the ridiculous memory footprint they also need to fix the stupid little bugs they have that I have reported. Such things as opening a new tab everytime my friend on Yahoo replies to me or the fact that people could DoS you using the widget.

you mean replay gain? the horse has bolted but have you seen mp3gain (http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/)?
*unix version too =)
Yup and MediaMonkey has it built in. MediaMonkey can either do a ReplayGain volume levelling (levels in tag) or a MP3Gain style one (level changed in file).
wasn't there a bug about this?
Doing a bit of searching of the forum and bug tracker, I don't see any RG bugs that aren't fixed. There was one bug where RG didn't work with the BASS plugin, but that appears to have been fixed. Once upon a time there was a crasher that occurred when scanning a track while it's playing, but that was fixed years ago. Other than that, I don't see much in the way of reported problems with RG. I certainly didn't come across any resource usage-related posts...

How does it look with the new version?
I am not certainly the only one who waits quite ardently
on a topical version of this great player.
The 120 beta is good, but no language support etc.

Our biggest supplier of our main sales product parted ways with us. Actually they are a dead end company now, with no more R&D. They've been bought out three times in the last 5 years. And have no dealers any longer (so I'm saying...it's not just us). They were absorbed, and dropped. Tech support still exists for now though... at least.
So we have been scrambling to gain more products to fill the void. Unfortunately, that company had just the right niche product. But word is out now, that we are potentially unstable in our customer's eyes (by association). After all we sold them something in the last 2-5 years that is sunsetting already. Something that is a big ticket item. Try and win a bid now! Just ain't gonna be easy.
ANYWAY... The same feeling is upon me with qmp's future.:hurt:

So, I go to log in and to the forum and nothing, it's gone. What do I do. What do you do. What if,what if it's just gone one day. No warning, just gone. No more Quintessential forum?
I have to admit, i would miss it. I would miss some of you.
Yes I have had few glasses of wine. A very nice 2006 La Crema Chardonnay. A very nice American winery from Sonoma, California. I am feeling a little sentimental. Maybe just mental.

Maybe it's time to open sources for public?
Hanzo

I am divided between seeing the player progress as Open Source, and seeing it drift as Open Source...
I'd say it's unlikely that we'll see QMP open-sourced. There's several libraries in there that are closed-source and not made by Paul. Like we'd need a new default MP3 decoder, and most likely all the Gracenote stuff would go bye-bye.
Then there's the matter of finding someone to take on the project & continue to develop it. We have what, two active plugin developers? And Tokelil doesn't seem too hot on the idea.
Possible, but unlikely.
Even more, Paul can be unable to opensource any part of QMP because of Gracenote contract (I think it exists?).
But... damn, it hurt to see best player to stop progressing.
