Hi folks. Post anything you like here (within reason).
I had to show these photos of my pc showing before and after it's visit to a local pc expert. He was charged with replacing the PSU and cleaning it out inside.
Image 1 - note the dirt and the relatively tidy cabling.

Image 2 - I know, I'm deeply ashamed.

Image 3 - honestly, you can't see the dirt when it's under the desk.

Image 4 - here's what I found when I got it back to my house.

Nice job of cleaning the dirt out eh? And that cabling is the definition of stealth. I might just have let it lie and put it down to experience if the replacement PSU hadn't destroyed itself 10 minutes after startup! Angry? You have no idea! I only went to the shop because I lacked the cofidence to tackle it myself, jeez.
I'll post some photos of how I've got it going myself after I take some tomorrow, although this might not be the thread for it.
Anyone else got any embarrassing photos? Or maybe photos of cool gadgets they have? Keep it clean though.

It is not uncommon to see the CPU heatsink clogged with dust. It is a common cause of overheating in hotter climates.
So what are you saying? They charged you for something that they didn't do?

He charged me £40 for an hour's work! I paid it assuming he'd actually done it. I only found out he hadn't when I got home. I suppose I should have opened the case for a look but I took him at his word.
When I revisited the shop on the Monday - it was Saturday the pc packed in - he told me that he didn't think it would work because I had a "big" video card. I explained to him that seeing as he was the "expert" maybe he should have taken that into account. I also explained that imo having another PSU go bang was putting my other components at risk. He said I was talking rubbish. I could see where this was going and so left him knowing my solicitor would be in touch. We didn't even get to the complaint about the lack of any internal cleaning. Anyway, it's with the solicitor now and he reckons the idiot's not got a leg to stand on. I'll see him in court. It's not even the money you know. You put your trust in a professional and you get treated with contempt. Did he really think I wasn't going to have a peek inside.
I had already decided over the weekend to not let him do anything further and so I ripped out the "new" PSU and ordered a replacement online which arrived on Monday. I took as many photos as I could of the wiring so I'd be able to have a stab at installing the new Hiper Type-R replacement. As it turned out it was a modular design and so was much easier to plumb in than the other kind with the captive harness.
I'm going to start a business :bulb:

Yeah, when it comes to computers, do it yourself because if you let someone else do what ever you want have done with it, then he will be happy with the result but inevitably you, the customer, wont.

DITTO! Thanks to all the encouragement by certain members in this forum.
I completely built my current computer with the exception of the installation of the motherboard.
On my laptop my video stopped functioning properly. Not wanting to take it in and spend a lot to have it fixed I used GOOGLE to finally figure it all out and fixed it myself. It took a couple of days...but I was determined and knew it could be done and my persistence resulted in my being able to fix it myself. The best part is, aside from saving a pocketful of cash I learned enough to apply to other problems that might arise.
Felt good.:)

Aye I know guys. In the past I have upgraded almost every other part myself but the PSU blew on Saturday morning and not having anothe PC I couldn't do any research into the problem. The thought of going to Monday with no computer wasn't an option to me so I trusted a shop, for the last time.
It's all good anyway, in future I'll be able to do it myself. I do want a laptop though. For backup if nothing else.

A very wise investment. Doesn't have to be anything more than something that gives you acces to the web.:bulb: :)
