A phone without buttons? I don't think so.

I have a (very expensive, even though it's not from Apple) universal remote that uses a screen to show "buttons" that you then press to control whatever. I thought it was a nice idea; you could endlessly customize the screen and buttons any way you want to.

But you know what? You have to look at the remote to see what you're doing; without the tactile feedback from physical buttons your fingers get lost; instead of changing the volume you may change the channel. And when I'm watching a movie I really really don't want to look at the remote to use it.

This remote is now in a drawer, replaced buy a very cheap but very functional unit.

A phone would be the same way, I think. I really really don't want to look at it to dial a number. I may be walking, or driving or my eyes may be otherwise occupied. I may leave the phone in a pocket and dial there if I have my head set on. The iPhone just doesn't seem really practical.

Can you change the battery? I can't have a phone with a battery I can't change. I don't travel without a spare.

And the build quality of ipods in the past don't fill me with the greatest of confidence either. How durable will the screen be? Will it stand up to the real world use of a cell phone?

Ipods are like beer; you never really own either, you're merely renting them.

And would you really want your music collection held hostage by both Apple and now Cingular?

500 $ ? Ay, that's alot...

and that's 500$ plus a 2 year contract with a wireless company. so the price without contract would be more like 700-1000$ (hard to guess without knowing the contract details).

i asked myself years ago why nobody makes a phone only consisting of a touch-screen display. i should have patented that idea, now apple has the patent ...

and no i will NEVER buy some iShit because they are ridiculously overpriced, underpowered and need proprietary ugly software.

Wow, i wonder what happens when you scratch the screen. Maybe the "call" button will be permanently activated lol :cyclops:

The map feature is kinda cool if it were free or cheap to use. After all you are permanently connected to the net.

Personally like the design, but I can see busty's point about lack of real buttons. I would think it is a matter of a bit more time though to get used to. (If the software design is decent)

If it wasn't because of the iPod software crap integrated I would mind one.

I thought so much...All I need is a phone that rings...:rolleyes:You do? Personally I need at least a good calendar. (And my next phone will have Bluetooth and WiFi to syncronise etc.) Also a few games etc. are nice when you need to kill a few minutes on a bus or train etc.

Btw. don't think it has been mentioned:
Cisco Sues Apple Over 'iPhone' Trademark Use (http://www.betanews.com/article/Cisco_Sues_Apple_Over_iPhone_Trademark_Use/1168471707).

I got a brain to remember stuff and otherwise a pen and paper or my notebook. I dont do games on mobile phones. I dont use the build in camera (poor image quality although there are some 3Mpixel cameras build in already, still I got a dedicated camera) and i dont use it as an mp3 player because i got one already. Sooo like I said, i just want it to ring and last long on the battery

More trendy overpriced Apple garbage to appeal tot he iLemmings (TM).

This is especially finny given that Nokia already has a device on the market that's pretty close to this and Apple's expensive toy isn't due for another year. IThose who have any sense at all will stick with one of the majors in phone technology. I have less than no faith in Apple's portable electronics capabilities given the junk that is the iPod line in genera (and their notebooks, and... ).

Of course the iLemmings(TM) will lap it up in droves - it'll go with their hair, "fashion sense" and egos.

How did I miss this thread? When I first heard 'phone running OSX' I was VERY interested, as that could give it an instant library of good apps to run. Then I found out that you won't be able to load any 3rd party applications onto it. My interest in this device instantly dropped to zero.

Why are you even remotely surprised by this?

This is a product from APPLE.

That means, by definition, the following:

1) PROPRIETARY

The rest (overpriced, substandard feature set, trendy but generally less robust construction than the competition) take a back seat to that engraved-in-the-stone-tablets-from-Moses cardinal rile.

"We must prevent the rubes from buying anything from an yone other than us and milk the gullible and stupid sheep at every possible turn - this is our Mission Statement and the ultimate credo of our Holy Cause".

Shame on you Toe - I would have thought that this was obvious.
