View Full Version : QMP logo attack

With the impending (?) release of QMP, a new logo is required too. Now the classical (((qmp))) is not really a logo as such imo. So I'm going to try think of other possibilities. Feel free to join in too :)
Here's my first one (apart from the one in my avatar):

Good idea !
If we have, let's say 5 logos or so, we could start a poll and decide which one will be QMP's logo. of course Paul or matt could still say "No, that's horrible, I don't want that for my player" ;)
Oh and Rex : I like the idea behind your logo, to make a loudspeaker out of the Q. A bit more Eye candy would be great though ;)
I am going to try to make my own. But I don't know if I have the skills...

(((qmp))) is excellent.
I dont see you making logos ;)
That’s pointless, like re-styling Apple logo.
(((qmp))) is clean, simple, symmetrical, and can be reproduced without using graphics and colors.

I agree with Lich - I like the logo as it is.
What we need - and what Rex also did - is a new ICON.
Started workin on it - stay tuned ;)

Fine, i guess you have a point. An icon it is then. Or whatever you can come up with that involves the letters QMP somehow. :apple:

I really like that! Not sure about the colouring, but i love the layout with the round, shiny design and (( )) things above and below. I really think the final icon should be something similar.
How about using Rex's avatar without the stuff around the outside, but with this layout?

Hmmm, definitely a big improvement! The colouring is much better. I think you got the font right first time, it was the same one as the qmp logo, right? How about making the (( )) things white, 'cos the outline just doesn't look quite right. Also I'm not sure if the background is just right, I'd try and get it as close to Rex's background as possible. I like the glowy-ness though!
Another idea would be to make the background a glossy white look, kind of ipodish I suppose. The qmp text could be a grey colour and the (( )) green.
I would have a go myself, but my photoshop skills are non-existent.

Here are two high quality mng animations (medium and small) of the QMP logo you saw before. You'll need an mng player or image editor to view them. Irfanview will do but you'll need the plugin pack. You can get that from the irfanview website. I hope mng is going to catch on. It soooo kicks gif's arse

Actually using this (http://www.mindworkshop.com/alchemy/pngpro.html) great software. mng/jng is supported by some browsers like Konqueror. For Firefox you have to get this (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18574) extension (go to comment 85 - windows). It used to be supported in the Mozilla browsers but it was taken out for some ungodly reason.
Go to my website here (http://www.geoverse.eu/projects.html), to try it out once you have the extension installed. :P

First I've ever heard of that, but as the plug-in was free and I was curious Opera 9.1 is now MNG capable. What are the benefits of using MNG (other than sheer geekery of using a format no-one else has even heard of let alone can see ;) )

I think the compression is better than gif(haven't really worked with to many mng files) and the image quality blows gif away big time.

MNG is just multiple PNG images AFAIK, which means 32 bit color (incl. alpha channel). Gif only handles 256 indexed colors.

Actually it's a bit more subtle than that. As of now, you either have 24bit colour animations and one colour which is transparent or you have 256 colours and the possibility to have up to all of those transparent, ie alpha blended. mng animations, while they have good compression like png, need extra chunk information for the animation to exist, which takes up more space than in a gif for example.
svg files (scalable vector graphics) are also an interesting alternative to png but especially jpg. They can already be displayed in most browsers without the need for a plugin.

I haven't had a look at the specs yet, but I would think they'd carry all the good things in PNG to MNG.
The bad thing about gif (now that patents have expired) is that it can only index 256 colors. Would make no sense to introduce the same limitation in PNG IMO, since you could have rgba in 32bit without much trouble.
svg files (scalable vector graphics) are also an interesting alternative to png but especially jpg. They can already be displayed in most browsers without the need for a plugin.Vector graphics aren't suitable for photos and will never be an alternative to JPG. SVG is nice for things made in graphic programs, which consist of geometry, color fills, gradients etc.

I quote myself wrong. You can do whatever you like with alpha blending, it's the software (http://www.mindworkshop.com/alchemy/pngpro.html) i use that has some limitations as well as the browsers that support mng as of today.

I've actually become quite partial to the GIMP because once you learn a bit how to use it, it has more potential than Paint.net. The latter is great for quick edits, but the real magic happens with a richer palette of tools in the GIMP.

Well yes...of course you would...that was my whole point. But only if you didn't have the 'correct' tool. The corkscrew works best when it is opening a bottle of wine. Then it is the correct tool. Rex is working outside the core of Photoshop when he attempts to use it for his purposes. He is using a corkscrew to open up a can of tuna. For someone else who uses Photoshop for its primary purpose...namely the manipulation of a RAW file...then we have a corkscrew opening a wine bottle.
Ain't life grand?
