View Full Version : Useless keys

A few days ago I've read a funny newspaper article about keys many people never use on their keyboards. Oh yes, how true it is! There are quite a few I never use. Or only by mistake, as the Insert-key or the NumLk-key. The x-key? Cannot remember when I've used it last time ... Hehe, just kidding ... Like all of you, I also have two sets of Ctrl and Alt keys of which I only use one. May be inefficient, but that's my reality. And the Windows key ... A huge time saver for you? Not for me. Never use it. And there are even more.
So, what I would like to ask you: Do you know a (free) program which lets me assign key functions to my liking? Of course not only in a certain application, but in general, Windows-wide.
Any idea is very much appreciated.

Don't think this is exactly what you are looking for, but I thought that I would post it anyway. I have never used it, but it looks interesting. There is a freeware version, but it only supports Windows Logo key blocking. In order to control Apps, Caps Lock, Num Lock, F-Lock, Power and Sleep key, you'll need I Hate This Key Deluxe Edition.
I Hate This Key (http://www.bytegems.com/ihatethiskey.shtml) can customize any system-wide keys on any keyboard. This means deactivating a key completely (a very popular option for Caps Lock), customizing them (for example, activating Caps Lock only when pressed twice or held down), F-Lock inversion option for the functional keys (F1 through F12), forbidding deactivating of Num Lock or any other key, and allowing game users to block infamous Windows Logo key along with system-wide key combinations (like Win+D) while playing games.

AutoHotkey (http://www.autohotkey.com/) might do what you want (GPL). For QCD/QMP related functionality you can of course use the integrated hotkey plugin or the hotkey plugin 3.0 (http://www.tropictech.de/modules/PDdownloads/singlefile.php?cid=3&lid=13).

Thank you guys for your helpful hints. I will be happy if I only can bring back to life two or three of my dead keys.
