View Full Version : Can it be that the MAD plugin supports surround sound?

After reading so many threads in which people say the MAD plugin is a must, I decided to give it a go. Well, im definitely not disappointed :D. I have 4 speakers and besides crystal clear sound, it seems to be divided between the front and rear speakers. I.e. some instruments are heard clearer from the front speakers whereas other instruments are heard clearer from the rear speakers. So i was wondering, does the MAD plugin support surround sound or is it my soundcard?

Same thing here. I believe it's your soundcard. Or your speaker settings (I have a "6 speaker" surround setting and a "2/4 channel" stereo setting that automatically uses all speakers).
Quote from the MAD website:
"MAD does not yet support MPEG-2 multichannel audio (although it should be backward compatible with such streams)"

thx, that clarifies things a bit. Also i realised that i only get sound from all 4 speakers when using direct sound. With wave-out i only get sound from 2 speakers. Not sure why that is happening either.
Most modern consumer soundcards have the ability to take a 2 channel stream and create a pseudo-surround effect from it. Generally this is done through directsound. Somewhere in your driver controls you should be able to turn it off.
What I don't get is that you say it only happens with MAD. That shouldn't have any impact on it. The only things I can think of that MAD does differently is that it can use larger samples / higher sampling frequency (24/96, or whatever the MAD plugin's abilities are).

Yea, you are probably right, i shouldn't trust my ears too much :)

I have yet another question about the MAD plugin :). How is it possible that i can play at a resolution of 24 and 32 bits?? My soundcard only supports 16 bits. Also when change it higher, output reverts back to 2 speakers. Very strange.
