I've been using Agent for like a decade, and while it's a great newsreader, it's kind of stagnated. Supposedly the developers have released a beta of the 2.0 release, but I swear it seems like they must only write about 1 line of code a day since it's taken them forever to improve upon it at all. I just started to play with Gravity, PowerGrab, and NewReactor. I'd prefer something opensource, but my main objective is a highly configurable reader that's still being actively developed. Does anybody have any suggestions of other readers to look at?

OpenSource News Readers are few and far between, unless you want email support added in with them...
Mozilla Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird) is a nice opensource program that is being VERY actively developed. It is both an email program and a news reader...
Give it a try...

I also use Mozilla for my surfing, mail and news but I don't think it's all that flexible. But it does all I need of it. And I also use DejaGoo.
..bh.

Xnews. It's the best I've found. Very flexible, and the developer seems to still be around. It's not open source, unfortunately. It is Free as in Beer, however.

I use Agent 1.91 myself. For the downloading I use it for, it can't be beat. The old saying still applies.. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

It's an Agent clone but with multithreading, multiple server support and a bunch of stuff the folks at Forte should have added and are only getting around to with version 2.0 (someday).

Oh, and it's free.

For Usenet binary pillaging, GrabIt! Eight threads downloading simultaneously is downloading heaven.

It too is free.

+3 for Xnews. I use sometimes Thunderbird for Usenet but as i didn't found in the program (or in its available extensions) a 'scoring by colors' option ...:ermm:, i prefer to use for the moment xnews.
