I'm concerned about these new built-in chip pay cards!
These have been around for a short while now, but haven't heard a lot of discussion about them. Are they a good idea? Have they thought of all the downsides to them?
If I were to use one, I would need an alarm (of some type) on it!! Can you imagine what hackers will come up with to steal your ID? Like a showering inmate... I don't want to be attacked from the rear. Only I'd be financially screwed by a potential pocket scanner of some sort!
Anyway, I would have to think that the financial institutions thought ahead and weighed the pitfalls against the benefits, on these new fangled gadgets. , ... Right?

In the UK we have cards with little chips in, they look a lot like the chips you get on those TV PPV cards. Basically you put the card in a slot at the till, don't give the card to the cashier and then enter your pin no. when the machine asks. Its called Chip n' Pin. Its not a bad idea. I'm not too sure about the whole wireless thing though.

My mother's bank gave her a new debit card with one of those chips. What disturbs me is that you can use it in a store without needing to use your PIN. At this point it seems that any security advantage of having such a card VS holding cash has disappeared; the thief no longer needs the PIN to access our balance.

This is in addition to any thoughts of someone being able to read your chip without your knowledge. And not just thieves; how about stores reading that chip when you enter a store and then doing a little credit check to see if you're a worthwhile customer?

That's nothing new here. We have had this type of chip cards, we call chipknip, for several years now. Works for me when it comes to paying small sums of money plus this is the only valid payment at my university. Be it getting a snack, coffee, or paying for a reader.

Basically you charge it at the machine using your pin code. So for example i put 10 Euro on it. Then i take it out and go to a vending machine (or even when buying stuff in a supermarket) and put the card in a slot, cash is withdrawn from the chip and voila! I paid. Very fast!

We also have another card that does what Matty said. Then many people also have a true credit card (eg Visa). But we still have cash too though ;)

Over here the chips are intergrated into all cards, Debit, Visa, Solo etc. You've still got the magnetic strip on the back.

Chip n' Pin cards are more secure, and you DO need a pin number to use it. They stopped letting you sign for your purchases on Valentines Day 2006. They are more secure than the standard cards which you signed for, because signatures can be faked, all you needed was the card. Now you need the card AND the pin number to be able to purchase anything (or withdraw anything)

Yes, I can see a pin # being safer.
But they are selling the ease of it all.
Walk up tap the screen and your done and gone! Nice concept!
I had heard of a German company, that's working on some sort of a safeguard to this style of card. It will warn you about someone scanning your card. I think they are to be marketing a wristband and that type of thing that has an alarm in it.
See, when there is one invention or Idea, there is always some opportunity to counter that invention, or add onto it. I just have to be quicker to market those ideas sooner!
:nervous:
I was at a ball game the other week, and they tried to give away a free T-ghirt for filling out an application for that card. I said no!

I'm not about to trust what little money I have to the airwaves... Tap and Go... Put it in my wallet... Sit down.... Oh look... My pocket is Broadcasting.... I trust My simple Debit Card... Swipe and Enter My pin... I like that... I can trust it... I don't mind some form of Chip... but not one that talks to the Air...

Now... Some of the Better Banks here, Have debit And Credit cards with Your Picture on them... :) I need to find that bank...

We used to have the chip on our debit cards too, but the chips had to be renewed so we got a new separate chip card. Actually it might depend with which bank you are registered with. For me it's the Postbank (www.postbank.nl). It's biggest competitor is the Rabobank (www.rabobank.com/) and i think sns bank (www.snsbank.nl/).
