Okay, continue discussion on the Security Council here.
The SC is pretty much revolving around the victors of WW2. There's a push to reform it (and other parts of the UN), but the problem is that there are 5 permanent members. They all have veto power, so any one of them can naysay a resolution. There are a bunch of 'other' members without such veto powers.
The PMs include the UK, France, Russia, the PRC and the US.
Japan (and others) want in. The US last I checked now supports this. China does not. If China says no, they don't get in (veto power).
For the record, members have to pay to help support the UN. Most of the permanent members pay about 10% of the total cost, with the US paying 22%. Japan pays about 20%, more than any PM other than the US. This, and their economic might, appear to be their major claims.
China claims possible increasing hostilities, land disputes and lack of remorse for past deeds.
Will Japan get in?
Should they?
What would it take to get the Chinese nod?
What are China's real reasons for denying Japan a permanent seat (veto power included)?
And is China being hypocritical?
... stay tuned
