View Full Version : Skinned Vis Tip for B66+
For resonator visuals:
You can optionally add peak bars to the top of each resonator:
- Make the resonator bitmap as you would currently (which is the exact same size of visual region on map).
- At the top of the resonator bitmap, add space two or more pixels high (increase size of bitmap, keep resonator image unaltered)
- The row imediately above the resonators is just a spacer so the peaks are more apparent for the skinner, the area above that will be what is used to draw the peaks.
Badly explained? View the sample below. The black line second from top is just extra space, and in the top row are one-pixel high 'peaks'.

Sweet! I've always liked the peak indicator, and having them be optional is nice too.

YAY look at them peaks go.
There's weakness in current implementation of skinned vis' peak meters:
falling meters are "cohering" to pumping bars. See illustration.
In some cases it can be avoided by inserting 2 pixel gap (instead of 1 pixel) in visN.bmp (this trick is painless if skinnned vis' background is solid color), but in other cases - not.
Maybe it's only me thinking such behaviour is wrong?

I think that you're thinking what I'm thinking! It would be more flexible if you had a VIS1.bmp with the normal state, and a VIS1Peak.bmp with the peaked state. That way the peak would vary in appearance depending on how 'high' the peak was. The benefits become more apparent when you're working with a gradient background, or as a more extreme case (like in my current project), where the vis is angled on the top rather than completely horizontally flat.

on a side note...
has anyone noticed that resonators don't reset completely for every track or is it just me?

But then again, I am not a skinning person (but I would love to be one). I know that the resonator problem would tend to annoy you;) .

yeah i've noticed this too... i have to stop the song and start playing it again to keep the resonators from maxing out continously...

after staring at all my experiments in skinned viz's, I thought I was seeing things.
hitting F5 key resets it too...FYI :D
