Windows Media Encoder Plugin 1.11 Problem
just got this plugin and tried it on a 2.6m wma i just downloaded and it took 16min to convert to an mp3. any body else have this kind of problem??
i converted to twice with same results even after restarting the puter.
the converted song sounded great and seamed fine and converted to about 2.5m in size.
im running QDC 4.11 on a 2gz amd w\ 512 meg mem. and XP.
thanks

Yea, that's slow. Usually it takes around 10 seconds per track. Where are the source mp3 and destination wma file located? (Hard drive, network, CDR, etc)

just tried on different file, same propblem. have to use taskmanger to shut it down after it took over 1min to get to 10%
guess i should have mention too, that this takes over most of the puters resorces and i can barely switch between windows. let alone run anything
thanks again

I have the exact same problem, it takes forever and conumes my computer resources to the point I can't do anything else.

Wait, so you are converting a wma to mp3? Then it is the mp3 encoder that is the problem.
My friend converted wmas from Napster to mp3 and it was also slow and froze QCD upon completion.

That's exactly what I was doing. Downloaded wma files from Napster and went to convert them to mp3 files.

I just want to add that the Napster wma's played fine and encoded fine except for the slow speed and the freezing.

I found that to be the case as well. Hopefully there's a simple solution.

your right i made a mistake in my wording on the encoding......
but it should not take 15 minutes to convert a 1wma song to a mp3.
ive converted from cd and wave files to mp3 and we are talking 10-20 sec to convert to an mp3....
so there must be some sort of problem converting wma files...

hmmm i think it might have something to do with the wma's and the format itself...
I used to use winamp with the older wma plugin for it (because the new one can't convert wma's at all...) and it took large slabs of time there too, just as qcd does now...
but anyway, y convert a lossy format to another lossy format, it just equals more loss!!!

I get the feeling based on what I've read on the Napster forum, that it might be a DRM thing with the particular wma files I downloaded there. Seems they have some kind of anti-theft system in them.

I found an interesting thing about this problem, I tried this and opened up the folder the files go to when they are converted, and inoted the following. QCD converts the file almost immediately, as it shows up in the folder of the correct size and plays fine, but QCD itself shows the progress indicator crawling slowly, using 99% CPU, and takes forever to "finish" whatever it is it's doing. However the file it converted is fine, no problem with it, it's just that the QCD fails to realize the file is done being converted, I can only guess.

What you need to do to get around this bug is a little extra work:
Convert them all to WAV format.
Many different WAVs will be made for the same song...odd.
Only keep the biggest WAVs for each song, delete the rest.
Import these kept WAVs backing into QCD.
Now convert to MP3.
VWALLAH!

VWALLAH! I now have a crappy quality file. Yay.

The difference is probably negligable. After all, you are encoding from wma to mp3, not exactly high quality file types.

I've only converted a wma (192 kbps) to mp3 (also 192) once... and that one time will do me for the rest of my life. Even i noticed a great difference in sound quality, and ill admit it myself, i don't have great ears. A great loss of definition and some background noise began to creep in. So unless you require the files to be in mp3 for use in a mp3 player, why do it?
