Lycos? A dutch ISP too? Lol I had no idea! Big ones here are KPN telekom, Casema, @home, Sun, Vodafone, and others. I have Lijbrandt, who suck. Anyway, i wonder whether the bigger ISP will be so co-operative... :ponder: I dont think this event will have large repercussions for the privacy of internet users here. We Dutch are pretty obsessed about privacy and the public opinion is always heard. Yeah...no worries ;)

Yeah, Holland has plenty of ISP's - shame they're all useless.
I have planet.nl who are better than most, but still......

Yeah.

Can't happen here.

Privacy Act.

Yeah.

Can't happen here.

Privacy Act.
How safe is that under a Government who, if they continue to rule, as one of the first acts of legislation, pass a law making it illegal for Canadians to download music, movies and anything else protected by copyright?

The Privacy Act prohibits the release of any client information to any party other than law enforcement unless the client has given their express permission in writing. This is in direct contrast to the US where third party thugs such as the RIAA and MPAA *can* gain access to that information because there is no legislation blocking them.

Question:

I would expect the Conservatives to kiss the ass of the Americans and pass a DMCA and downloading amendment even sooner than the Liberals. How can you be sure they won't?

Good news...until you end up having a Government who decides it's in their best interests NOT to have a Privacy Act. Remember...nothing is forever.

I would expect the Conservatives to kiss the ass of the Americans...

Like we don't kiss their ass now? A puffing up of the chest and a few well chosen words to give the illusion that we are 'standing up' to the US re:Softwood Lumber IS kissing ass. Doing something constructive like leveling some taxes of our own on imports...or outright banning the importation of certain products...or choosing not to export any more oil to them...ACTIONS...not words...now THAT would be proof we are no longer 'kissing ass'. If you are asking yourself 'Yeah...why don't we do something meaningful?' I'll give you the same answer Ralph Klein gave when Jack Layton started running his mouth about such 'solutions'.

Ralph: (laughter) 'You don't want to go down THAT road. (Shaking of head and more laughter.)

Tell me if that isn't the truth of it. Open and shut case...move along.

I don't care how you want to spin it...we live because they let us live.

Here is a country that, through a Cattle Association lobbyist group from Texas, succeeded in preventing the importation of Canadian Cattle for over a year longer than what was necessary. Why? Profit.

Do you have any idea what effect that had on cattle producers out west? With the Liberals of course, 'Out West' is the operative phrase. One wonders if they even know where 'Out West' is. The Conservatives do...and they know where Quebec is as well...won't be such a cozy little arrangement there. Remember, the election is won or lost in Ontario.

...and pass a DMCA and downloading amendment even sooner than the Liberals. How can you be sure they won't?

Quicker than 1st order of business?

The truth is I have not heard anything from the Conservative camp about this subject but I'll tell you this...my vote for a Government would not depend on if they would pass this law or not. Personally the only way they will stop me from downloading is to close all sites where I am able to download. Either that or arrest me...and since my odds of getting arrested are far greater than the odds of my getting hit by lightening...I'll take my chances.

This issue is another example of how the US and the Corporations who rule it dictate their wishes to us. Do you think either Political Party in Canada gives a rats ass as to whether we download or not?

Which is why I won't vote onservative.

Like we don't kiss their ass now?

You see DMCA passed here? A Patriot Act?

I don't care how you want to spin it...we live because they let us live.

Nah. We live because if they came up here the entire planet would ostracize them. Even overweening arrogance won't allow a US government to take that risk.

See my comments on Free Trade in the other governemnt thread? We can actually thank ourselves (and a Conservative government) for that.

Quicker than 1st order of business?

The Liberals have promised that for a while and thus far, they haven't managed to.

The truth is I have not heard anything from the Conservative camp about this subject but I'll tell you this...my vote for a Government would not depend on if they would pass this law or not.

Mine either. My vote would depend on whether they owuld respect the Privacy Act, NOT pass DMCA, NOT abolish gay marriage and NOT pass a Patriot Act. But this is devolving off-topic to another thread already in existance.

Personally the only way they will stop me from downloading is to close all sites where I am able to download.

Given that I don't depend on sites...

This issue is another example of how the US and the Corporations who rule it dictate their wishes to us. Do you think either Political Party in Canada gives a rats ass as to whether we download or not?

Hell no.

My concern is whether or not we have the courage to stand up to a bullying outside influence.

Perhaps you are not familiar with the phrase 'The Pen is Mightier Than the Sword'?

Free Trade

This had absolutely NOTHING to do with Free Trade. It had everything to do with diseased animals and a Nation's legitimate concerns about protecting its citizens from getting ill.

The offence is when a group of self-serving lobbists are able to manliputate the situation to their own advantage by prolonging the beef ban a year beyond the time when the beef was acknowledged to be perfectly safe.

Quicker than 1st order of business?

The Liberals have promised that for a while and thus far, they haven't managed to.

Only due to unusual extenduating circumstances...the calling of an Election being one of them.

Tell me more...

You need look no further than the Softwood Lumber issue to discover the answer to that question. Who is that...oh right...Liberals.

Or perhaps Global Warming.

As an aside...it occurred to me that China (who are making inroads into reducing greenhouse gas emissions) should tell the US that they will begin to respect civil rights on the same day that the US begin to control greenhouse gas emissions...that would be a very interesting day.

Well...one can dream...can't one?
