View Full Version : Lich's Icon Packs
Soon (next week) I will need testers for updated IconPack2. PM or e-mail me if you're interested:)
Also, you can post request in this thread: new icons wishlist and (useless!:)) critics. If you're requesting icon for new format, toss me a link on official site or another place where I can find it's logo or design guidelines.

Lich: I tried the current icon pack at work, but they were kinda unreadable on a 19 inch monitor at 1024x768 (I know .. a useless critisizm ;) ). Will the next version be larger so as to show clearer on the screen? I'll be glad to try it on my home box.
kinda unreadable
Do you have your Icon size customized (in Desktop preferences)? If so, icons will be crippled. If no... I don't know why this happening. Can you post a small sreenshot?

I'll do that when I get to my home box. As far as I know, I haven't customized the icons. I'm currently using the "OhPhooey" icon pack here at work, and they all look fine.

OK .. Found the problem. After reading the fine print in the install dialog, I realised that it won't work with Win98SE. :o I guess you don't have anything that will work for me at home. Sorry I won't be able to try it out.
I hate starting new threads for small causes, so... Can I report a bug right here?
While importing IconPack:
* if IconPack's extension is .dll all is OK.
* if IconPack's extension is .qip, PLS and M3U icons won't work. Just empty places in Icon View of Icon Manager.

NEWS: Updated to 3.1. Cool 16x16 icons:)

Hey nice icons!
Its all working for the files types assocaited with QCD, but how do I get it to work for media player and real player files? They still seem on insisting on using the default icons for those programs :(
Any ideas?
Do I have to manually setup these associations?
Cheers,
Jack

Go to control panel, then click on folder options. Go to the file types tab and look for the extensions for those media types. You should be able to change those icons to the ones included in Lich's icon packs.

Sorry to be a pain but just remembered. Can you make it so that it recognises M4A. Its just a normal mp4 icon. Cheers.
Sorry, what is M4A?
I mean, how it's related to FAAD, MPEG4 and AAC? Any links?

Sorry, what is M4A?
its the same as mpeg 4, just its how i-tunes labels its file extentions .m4a the current qcd MP4 plugin supports these files. I think they call it "mpeg 4 audio".

OK I have a question. This may be "old hat" to some, but I've just this week finally resolved my icon issues, si I'm using icon packs for the first time.
My question is, how does a person uninstall an icon pack, that is, how would I revert to the QCD default icons? I'm assuming if I installed a different icon pack, it would override an existing icon pack installation, but what about the defaults?
Also, regarding the "Allow import to override existing icons" option, what is checking or unchecking this box supposed to do? It seems to have no affect here.

There's Set default button in Icon Manager.
I'm associating M4A extension with this icon:
Right?

Oops. Bug?
If you mean is it a bug in your icon pack, I don't think so.
I should mention that I still have to go through after importing the dll and spend several minutes assigning each icon manually. When I do the import the message says "27 icons imported and assigned" or some such, but your icons aren't there even after I reboot Windows. QCD still has it's default icons. For what this is worth, I'm running Windows XP pro with SP1.

Um if you've already done that then thats ok, but as its more related to MP4 perhaps use the same icon as MP4 for M4A would be a better idea. Like so...

Well, hmm, it's kinda strange I think. Double strange because I'm running the same WinXP pro + SP1. Are you using some third-party icon managing software?

That only gets grayed out when you already have the default icon set.

Nope, I was before but I unistalled it a few days ago because it was playing havoc with de default icons. I've had the problem for quite a while as have others, as described HERE (http://www.quinnware.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1831&page=1&highlight=icon)

That's the way it's supposed to work, but that's not the way it works on my system, that's the problem, it's always grayed out.
Ah-ha! Set default button can be active only for Player Icons, not for File Icons:(

yeah that looks right lich. cheers. that was it! M4A was for Mpeg 4 Audio and MP4 was the container for video and or audio. but M4A was created to stop confusion between the two.
v.3.3 changelog:
+ Arrow Up, Arrow Down, New, Default Audio/Video/Playlist icons added
* MP4 icon separated into MP4 Video and M4A Audio icons
* Deep changes, filesize shrinked, most of icons (except 16x16 modes QSK and QSF ) should look properly on Win98

Yes!!!!!!!! Your new version 3.2 installs automatically and assigns all icons correctly on my system.
However, I still have the problem if the "set default" button being grayed out, see the image. In order to get my default icons back, I have to delete your dll and then reinstall QCD.
Nevertheless, I'm glad the icons are working for me. Why the old revision worked for some folks and not others is still a mystery to me, but rather moot now.
Thank you!!!!!!!!!
EDIT: I found out I can get the defaults icons back by using the "Change Icon" button and using the QCDIcons.dll. Still, the set default button should be active. I'm not sure where the problem lies, it may not be the icon pack at all.

Woods you cant "set default" from the list in the middle left. You can only set defaults from the main list at the top.

I know. The 2 lists are clearly labeled. "Per extension" icons don't even have defaults, I was talking about the Player default icons.

Deleting extension from list won't help?

Yes, I can, for example, delete the MP3 extension from the extensions list and it will revert. My question is, what is the purpose of even having a "Set Default" button if it is always grayed out? I'm assuming it was designed into the icon manager for a reason, but it sure can't be used if it's never accessible.

OR it should work as Delete for File Icons, just duplicating it.

This icon pack is great - thanks for making it available...
Have you thought about updating it for speex files/streams. Speex is a free codec for speech - and the plugin shaoshao has provided (http://www.quinnware.com/list_plugins.php?plugin=39)works great.
FYI the website is http://www.speex.org and the extension is *.spx.
Its somewhat related to the flac and ogg formats in that it comes in under the xiph.org family.
I couldn't see a logo but a speech bubble or something might be appropriate?
(As an aside some websites make interviews etc. available in this format incidentally - e.g. http://www.lugradio.org)
Thanks!

Kudos for the wonderful icon set, I love the way things look! There is however a noticeable delay in the display of folders with many files. I notice that some other people have had the same problem, and think this is due to the time Windows takes to display true color icons. Any chance of a 256 color set, which I believe would significantly improve performance (and is an unnoticeable difference to my poor eyesight)? Would appreciate it if it's not too much of a bother. Thanks in advance!

v.3.5 changelog:
* 256-color version for each icon. Not tested!

Many thanks for entertaining the request! First off must confess that what little I understood of the previous post was thanks to http://babelfish.altavista.com/. ;) That said, I think (but can't confirm) that the time Windows takes to display a folder with many files depends on the time it takes to load icons because whenever I scroll my folder (with the humongous number of files) it takes some time for the icons to update. This wasn't a problem previously with the Windows media icons, which looked less visually attractive than your set. I do know that having a lot of icons loaded in memory tends to slow down the computer.
Adding 256 color versions to the existing library might not help much if the true color ones are still there since Windows would probably load all of them and prefer to display the true color version. Ideally would like a only 256 color version of the icon pack.
Hope I'm not being too much of a pest,
Sue Ann

No offense, but what computer does it take to be slowed down by a set of 32bit colour icons? Pentium II 400MHz? Pentium 166MHz? 486/66MHz ? IMO there must be a thousand other things that can slowdown a computer, but icons?

What's happening is that windows reads all ur media files to verify media type, size, length of songs, tags, and i dont know what else. I doubt that whatever icons, if sized at 32*32, should not make any significant difference to the loading time. Better check what processes youve got running instead.

Ah! Think I have it figured out (correctly this time) after some digging around in the Windows registry. The process is slow because QCD uses an "unconventional" way of displaying icons. Instead of the usual Windows method it has an icon handler shell extension that distinguishes between different sub-types of files. After manually getting rid of this icon handler there is no more delay in display of icons. Guess this is a design issue that won't get addressed unless many users have the same problem. Oh well. Sorry to have tried everyone's patience.

:normal: I would never have thought of that! Bizar. Do other programmes have their own icon handler too? I wonder why QCD uses one... :ermm:

Well, hmm, sorry. Your e-mail adress confused me.
Glad to hear your problem solved now. Maybe you should tell people in this thread (http://www.quinnware.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1688&highlight=icon+pack) how you've done it...
ALL
Can anybody (Win9x user) test 256-color icons for me? Just turn off "Use full-color icons" in Display Properties and see if anything wrong.
Sorry. It took too long time for me to re-upload Icon Pack without over-intelligent installer.
Now it's just self-extractiing zip-archive, and you can install Pack to QMP without messng with old QCD folder.
Sorry again.
