I've just downloaded the QMP, and whenever i load it, it just crashes, i dont get to press or touch anything, it loads, i get the player, but it wont respond to anything. I currently have winamp 5 installed. do i need to have the original QCD player installed also?

We're definately going to need more information here. Give us some information about your system. (Like what version of Windows you're running, and anything else you think might be useful.)
One thing you can try: right-click on the shortcut you use to start QMP, select properties, and then at the end of the box marked Target, add '/safestart' to the end of it (without the quotes). It will look something like this:
"C:\Program Files\Quintessential Media Player\QMPlayer.exe" /safestart
Then try starting QMP and see if that makes any difference for you.
No, you don't need to have the old version of QCD installed to run QMP. However, if you can't get QMP to run, you might try to uninstall it and then see if QCD 4.51 will run OK for you. Remember that QMP is still fairly early in its develpment, it does have quite a few bugs at this point.

No, QCD 4.51 isn't requered to be installed first. They can work side by side though if both are installed.
Try creating a shortcut to QMPlayer.exe and add /safestart to the Target address. Looks like this on my comp. but the path to QMP is probably different for you:
"D:\Programmer\Media\Quintessential Media Player\QMPlayer.exe" /safestart
Edit: Toe beat me to it I see...

Then that means that your problem lies with one of the plugins. I'd bet that the CD plugin is the problem. The /safestart switch disables all QMP's plugins and then allows you to find the cause of any problems. Try restarting QMP without the safestart switch again but give it about 5minutes or so to see if it loads up before giving up. If that succeeds (you'll know if its worked becuase it'll become useable) then the problem is similar to mine, which is the cd plugin causes massive slowdows. Go into preferences and disable (untick) the CD plugin then hit "save and close" and restart QMP. You should notice a big difference.
If the problem isn't the CD Plugin, go through all the Plugins (I know its a chore but it could help other people and it helps track down the cause of the bug so it can be fixed) and enable them one by one untill you get the problem again. Hope this helps.

Have you installed anything that may have messed with the CDDB controls? Check this thread: http://www.quinnware.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3964

Could this crash be related to a certain CDROM drive used? Because I have had trouble with my Liteon DVDROM drive playing CDs.
To further test this issue, you could try to enable some of the options in the TroubleShooting tab of the CD Audio plugin configuration. I would check the 'ignore hardware DB' first.
Also, submitting a report like this into a formal bug report in the QMP Bugs forums would help track it.

Will do.
