View Full Version : Is there a QCD RSS Feed?

I was wondering if there was an RSS Feed for the site, or if it would be possible for someone to make one (easily). It would be nice to be notified when there is a new skin, plugin, dev build, or final build. Without having to come to the site every day and click on all the tabs. Yeah... it's lazy... but that's what RSS is for. It's faster and easier.
I'm just recently discovering the greatness of RSS, and am slowly removing links from my personal bar and replacing them all with feeds!
Does anyone agree that it would be nice to have? Or do you think that would be mostly unnecessary?
Thanks!

So that's what RSS is about???? I fear Change..... So I've avoided them.... :robot:
This has been asked a couple of times before. And yes, it would still be nice to have. :)

Sorry if this has been asked too much!
Yeah, biggman... I avoided them for a while myself. But basically what they are... it's sort of like email. But when a news story is published, or something is updated on a site, it will send you a notification. You can set it up in some cases to either just have a summary of what it is with a link to it, or when you click on the feed, it will load the page. When you click on an RSS Feed, it will ask you if you want to "Subscribe to _____" and then it will start a little group for it, and all the news from that site will go under that group with a subject, and body and all that.
So instead of coming to Quinnware.com, and clicking on the skins page, plugins page, news, etc... it would just come to your "Quinnware Feed" group or whatever, and the subject would say something like "New Skin: ______" or "News: ______"
They can be set to update whenever, so in most cases you will get the feed right after the skin/story/whatever is published. It's really neat, and it's easy to get home from work or whatever and just be able to see all the news (that you would normally have to check on many different pages) from that entire day all in one spot.

Sounds cool.... I might Mess with that a little..... Opera always has a little Mark in the address bar when there appears to be one...

You need an RSS Feed Reader. Not sure what is the best because I haven't bothered too much with RSS.
But you can check out a list of Heinz Tschabitscher's Top 10 RSS Feed Readers here (http://email.about.com/cs/rssfeedreaders/tp/top_rss_windows.htm).
And you can see Heinz Tschabitscher's Top 10 FREE RSS Feed Readers here (http://email.about.com/cs/rssfeedreaders/tp/windows_free.htm).

You can also view the RSS feeds in Firefox.

You can also read them in Opera. If you have Thunderbird (The Mozilla Mail Client), you can use that to read them, too. I haven't tried any specific RSS readers, though.
But you should be able to click on the RSS Feed, and it will ask if you want to subscribe (Opera does anyway). You click "Yes" and it starts a 'Quintessential Media Player Updates' group. And from that point on it will send any QMP News right to that group as it's updated.
It's pretty great. I've only been using RSS for a month, but it's definitely a better way for me to get caught up on news after a busy day. It's all in one spot, you don't overlook things, it's easy to manage, etc.
Thanks again, Matt!

Strange. I haven't been able to get the RSS Feeds to work in Firefox. :ermm:
It just displays the Quintessential Homepage.
EDIT: OK. It appears that this is not a fully featured RSS Reader.

With other sites such as dslreports.com, it links me directly to the news in question.

So are you saying you are having the same problem as me? Cause I cannot get it to work in Firefox.

FF RSS support isn't very good IMO. Atm. Im trying out thunderbird and I think that might work okay for me.

In Firefox you have to create a LiveBookmark for the site. When you go to quinnware.com, look at the bottom right of the screen at the status bar. There should be a icon to click that will allow you to subscribe to the RSS feed. Then you view the feed with your normal bookmarks. It's pretty lame.
What I use is the Firefox extension Habari Xenu extension which puts a menu item in the Tools menu for Habari Xenu. When you click it, it opens a new tab with the RSS reader. It's pretty slick, but you have to bookmark the actual RSS feed as it doesn't read LiveBookmarks.

Be the first one to find out about updates and changes to Quintessential Media Player by subscribing to our new spanky RSS Feed!
Information that will appear :
- new releases are made (dev or regular)
- new skins or updates made to old ones
- new plug-ins or updates made to old ones
- QMP news
Why not adding "-new posts of web forum"?

Yer RSS support in FF sucks hard IMO. Doesn't work at all as I want it to. Habari Xenu extension seems a lot better though.
Personally I think Im gonna stick with Thunderbird as RSS reader for now. Seems to do it the way I want it to and I always have it running anyway. And I dont need to do anything extra to check if there's anything new. (Unlike FF and Maxthon where I need to open a special sidebar tab to check)

That would result in way too many messages, IMO unless you set up a seperate feed for each Forum. I've unsubsribed from feeds (like news sites)that drown me in messages. Personally the email system works fine for me.

True. RSS feed for subscribed threads would be cool though.
Anyway, nicely done Matt. :)

http://www.quinnware.com/forum/faq.php?faq=vb_board_usage#faq_vb_rss_syndication
It's built into the forum software, Matt just has to enable it which I'm not sure he has. It also only updates when there is a new topic, not for every new post.

Why a RSS feed for news about QMP when the new dev builds, plug-in or skins are so not frequent. :ermm:

Why a RSS feed for news about QMP when the new dev builds, plug-in or skins are so not frequent. :ermm:because it has been requested by many... and it is handy to keep up with things... I don't visit the plugins pages and the frontpage much.. so this way I can still keep in touch, with new plugins/skins/dev builds...

It's also nice for QMP users that Just don't visit often... Because Updates are not very frequent... I just started Using rss... And it is a time saver... There are about 12 other sites I visit now that I no longer have to check to see if something has been added... Your browser will just tell you... Well, Opera Will anyway...

I can't really work with Opera's RSS... it somehow doesn't do what I want it to do... I'm much more a fan of Firefox's Sage plugin :) which is much less intrusive.

I prefer reading the RSS feeds from Thunderbird. Its much more convenient...
But I have problems with flash... :(
I use the agrigator/syndicator built into Drupal (http://www.drupal.org) and browse it on my personal website. That way it's just like any other web page, I can just middle-click and open the stories in new tabs like anything else. Course, not everyone has their own web site, so it's obviously not for everyone.

I'm very comfortable with it... But then again... I've never messed with RSS before Quinnware had one... There may be better But this one seems simple enough for me...
