Could someone please help me with a question regarding replay gain? All of my mp3 files have already been run through the mp3 gain process. I am curious as to how that information was stored versus how replay gain stores it's information. I am also wondering if I now need to run all of my files again thru replay gain to keep them consistant with my future processed files that will now be replay gain adjusted. Any help and or advice would be greatly appreciated!

i think replygain is done on-the-fly (as it were)
and, say mp3gain, stores the info in metadata in the tag somewhere.
someone please correct me if i'm wrong.
as for them sounding the same, make some copies of your tunes and try it out mate
NEVER practice with your originals (at least i don't)

The mp3gain program actually applies the volume changes to your mp3 files after running the replay gain analysis. The changes are stored in tag info so they can be undone. What's nice about this is that you aren't dependent on a replay-gain capable player for the changes to be effective. You can play them with any mp3 software, or burn them, etc and the changes would still be effected.

In qmps implementation of Replay Gain the files aren't actually changed. The analysis is again stored in the tags and it is up to the input plugin to read that info and make the changes as the files are being played. You can at any time turn off Replay Gain in the plugin and no volume changes would be made.

You shouldn't have to redo your analysis. Files you did with mp3gain should read as 89 db (or whatever you changed them to) and qmp wouldn't change them after doing its Replay Gain analysis.

I personally think it would help to run the files through replaygain again even though you have run them through mp3gain because mp3gain can only adjust the volume to within 1.5 db's of each other and replaygain can adjust them closer to the same volume. I think it is like within .2 db's of each other if I remember correctly. I am not sure about that. I also have all my files run through mp3gain and I just did 3 of my folders through replaygain. I think I am going to do all of them that way.

That's kinda silly, IMHO. I mean, 1db is commonly defined as the smallest difference in loudness that humans can distinguish. That extra fraction of a db of adjustment is almost certainly not going to be audible, let alone something that could be called an 'improvement'.

I don't think it is silly at all. I have had all my files adjusted by mp3gain for a long time and although there is not a lot of differance in the volume of the files, and I agree 1.db is the closest a human can distinguish, the volume on some of the files are going to be set within 1.5 db of 89.00 db on the low side of 89 db and some of them will be set on the high side of 89.db which means there is more than 1.5 db differace in the volume of your music as a whole which can be distinguished. I don't play my music with the volume up high, just loud enough that I can hear and understand the words clearly. There are many of my songs that in order to understand the words, I still need to make a slight adjustment to be able to understand clearly. So why is it silly to run them through replaygain and narrow the differance between the volume settings of all my files so that I will hopefully not have to make any adjustment to the volume to be able to clearly understand all my music? That would most certainly be considered an improvement to me.
