well, there if there is a time QMP is capable of replacing WMP, i would say it is now :)
however, those to remove WMP totally from the system might find viewing web-embedded video or audio is a pain, as QMP did not have such function.
so, i found a minimalist WMP installer which give u back WMP streaming function on webpages BUT does not install the bulky WMP one your computer. So now u can sleep soundly after removing WMP tatally from ur system and replace it with QMP.
here i providing the link to the website:
http://ksphere.free.fr/site/codecspackage.php
enjoy all~ long live qmp. (WMP can go for good now)

Complete removal of WMP has been tried by many noble users. Sadly, these gallant knights have never been heard from again...

QMP is still a developing software, i will say let's keep WMP for a longer while as it will probably be useful to anyone somehow if we keep it.

WMP Is a Slow Bloated Peice of Crap That won't even Run on a Computer with A 400Mhz Cpu without Slowing Down.... If You find you have a requirement for a Video Player Use Media Player Classic.... It Will play Anything you have codecs for and it will run smoothly on a 400Mhz.... As The WaterBoy's Mama would Say... "Windows Media Player is the Devil!!!" :)

You do realise MPC and WMP use the same playback mechanism (DirectShow), don't you? If one stutters on a machine, they'll both stutter.
I have found that VideoLan Client uses vastly less CPU for both decoding and also post-processing when playing mpeg4-type (divx, xvid, etc) videos - typically only 1 or 2% CPU usage with no post-processing, which shocked me (maybe somehow it's using the GPU, I'm not sure). (WMP 6.4 by comparison would use 20+%.)

The system slowdown which causes the stuttering can be caused by the program bloat itself, having nothing to do with the codec. I've tested and observed this on my own system, playing identical video clips on the 2 players.

Well I was talking about WMP 6.4, which MPC is written to emulate. I won't touch 7, 8, 9, or 10.

I find that it skips (badly) when I type. And not just one one computer. It's on every PC I use (3).
I thought it was linked to hotkeys, but they're disabled.
And I don't have any plug-ins enabled.
Any thoughts?

I have my sincere doubts whether removing WMP is a good thing for the windows OS. I recon i'd only destabilise windows. WMP is integrated in everything like windows itself and IE. It's the backbone of media playing. Get rid of it and many alternative media players find themselves unable to play certain media. At least that's what i think might happen. Many times in the history of windows i could have sworn that some codecs are dependent on wmp although this sounds silly. As long as i dont load up wmp, i see it doing no harm :grimreape Also it lets me use "what im listening to..." in msn messenger, with the qcd plugin.

Hi All,
Been a bit of lurker on these forums for some time and have decided to finally register because of this particular thread. If you guys really and truly want to get rid of WMP then the only tool to use is nlite.
This can be found at http://www.nliteos.com/
Basically it lets you remove parts of the operating system including IE, but a little hint, do not remove IECore if you use this utility otherwise your install will go pear shaped. You can then download your WindowsUpdates by using a little program called Daisy 2.2 found here http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4023
I have used this solution on both a windows 2K and windowsXP install and it works a treat. Also no I have not experienced any lockups or crashes, in fact windows has been more stable since I created a custom install with nlite.
Regards
Adrian

I must say... That is a Nice alternative... But one thing is Missing... I don't like The Messenger service...
So this is what's missing...
http://grc.com/stm/shootthemessenger.htm
It's an Easy way to Well, Flip the Messenger Service On and Off... and it's only 22Kb... The author is a little Biased against Messenger also... If you couldn't tell by looking at it... ;)

You can actually disable the messenger service in nlite and then put a switch in the shortcut you make for daisy to ask it not to use messenger service.
-m = do not use messenger
That's how I use it and have had no problems. So you can get rid of it.

Meh... I dought I will ever use Daisy Ever again... The stupid thing doesn't work properly... It needs to Evolve more... It won't install all updates... It downloads them... Installs what it feels like... then Tells you they were all installed... But they weren't... You have to download them again and hope for the Best...

Ok i read about it here (http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/docs/messagepopup/) and it sounds very dodgy. I guess i'll be disabling that sucker
EDIT: THat is funny, i had it already disabled lol :)

In relation to Daisy not downloading the updates and installing them correctly, all I can say is RTFM, or the Readme help docs in this case.
It points out that the problem is with windows and not daisy all you need to do is add the -c switch and it will install it ok and be ignored when checked.
"Issue 7-
Q: Daisy keeps offering me hotfix MS03-013 (811493), MS03-045 (824141), or MS04-11 (835732) even though it already installed it, why?
A: Daisy uses hfnetchk to identify installed hotfixes. Hfnetchk does a checksum of the files it believes are part of the installed hotfixes. This hotfix (and others) have files that are dependent on whether the local system is single or multi processor. These files are the same name, same version, but different checksums. Hfnetchk _assumes_ that the system is single processor. Multi processor systems or hyperthreaded systems will seem to have the hotfix installed incorrectly. That is false and can be ignored. If this is a continuing concern, use the '-c' command line option or customize Daisy with the 'customqs.txt' file locally."
