is it possible to make a song title etc. starting with "the" be sorted by the second word? i have 50 songs or so (im sure that little compared to other ppl) that start with the, and it gets clogged and annoying. i checked if other programs skip "the", and at least windows media player does - thats all i checked.

I just went through all my songs and deleted "the" from the title. Works much better for me.

Personally there's no way I would delete the "the" in my tags. That would mean the files aren't tagged correctly, which Im kind anal about in most cases.

I second this request.

True, but with "the" in the song title, it makes it almost impossible for me to set up and find the files I am looking for. I have 3350 files and the majoity of them start with "the". With "the" removed, it is easy to find almost any file I want as I have them in folders labeled A,B,C,etc, and inside the folder the same way by Artist and song title. Works great for me. Also, I never remember if the Artist used "the" in the name.

what happens if i had 'The The' queued up prior to 'The Who' :P it would look like
'... The'
'... Who' ha ha ha ha

you could also retag those songs like this:
Who, the
The, the
Beatles, the
etc.

I favour this method, and use it inconsistently.

I just take the files and name them without the "the" in the title. I name them properly in the tag and then sort them in the Media Player's Playlist by the file name. My file name template looks like this:

"artist name {album title} Track # - Track Title"

So the file appears like this:

"Beatles {Help!} 01 - Another Girl.mp3".

Works for me without any problems. This way I don't have to depend on a piece of software to sort it right, I've already done it.

Edit: The names in my playlists also show up correctly, as illustrated below in another post here. That's because the tag has been correctly labeled. I don't need to worry about the file name.

I'd also like to see this feature implemented--preferably the way Apple does it in iTunes and on the iPod. It's just about the only feature of either of those players that I like (I don't have iTunes installed on my comp). Apple alphabetizes artists and albums ignoring leading words like "the," but the "the" still appears in the artist or album name. So an artist list would look like this:

Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Secret Machines
The Shins
Slint
The Smashing Pumpkins
Sonic Youth

...etc, thus resolving Todd the Kiwi's problem

do they also ignore the dutch words "de", "het" and "een" or the french words "le", "la", "les" "l'" or the german words "der" "die" and "das"?

because if they are going to implement this, it had better be consistent along all languages, otherwise you would have "De Kast" among "Des'ree" and "David Holmes" instead of around "Kim Carnes" and "Katrina & the Waves" (as an example)...

and "les poppies" should be among 'Pat Benatar' and 'Paul van Dyk', instead of near "Leann Rimes" etc..

I guess you get my drift ;)

I see that this has been implemented in B101. One small, very unfair question/request: Can we have the ability to turn it off? If something is not strictly alphabetised, it plays havok with my mind when I look at it. It took me a good few hours to figure out why "The (International) Noise Conspiracy" was being listed at the top of my library, above "36 Crazyfists". (And yes, I do have a fair few artists who start with "The ", probably 60 or more if you go by track artist.)

Sorry! :nervous:

shrug. Have a textbox preference, semicolon separated, for "ignore at front for sorting" purposes.

the;a;les;

chuck a couple in as default, then it's easy enough for the weird people to totally clear it.

I don't like the idea of an option for this, I'm actually in the mindset of preferring to remove options. Things should just work best by default.

That said, I wonder... should "The (International) Noise Conspiracy" be filed under 'T', 'I', '(', or 'N'?
I'd say either 'I' or 'N', but I think 'N' would be harder case to make than 'I'.

Of course they should work *best* by default. But different people have different opinions. Sure, you don't want to get a new audio player and have to spend the weekend configuring it, but when the player is good, but there's one annoying thing that just irks you, it's nice if you can change it. Which reminds me of something, but I'll post it elsewhere.

Oh, and I'm tempted to go with "I" for the above. I have no strong feelings one way or the other.

It should go under 'I'. It's more than a little inconsistent, as "(hed) PE" is filed under 'H'.
