This is very cool...and although the icons are still on top...you do not have all that many and they are positioned in such a way that they integrate with the overall design...and so do not appear intrusive.
I am curious as to how often people change their desktop.
For myself it seems that my desktop changes every-time AlienGuise release a new desktop suite. The latest one is called DARKSTAR and was released about 3 weeks ago (as far as I know).

I just change mine when I happen across a skin part I like, and change the rest to suit. You *can* replicate a Linux (well, KDE) desktop under XP quite easily, same with any OS. At one point I had my XP looking EXACTLY like Amiga Workbench 3 - still one of my favourite OSs.

Have to be honest, right?
Glad you feel that way cause' I would have expected more from you. (No soup for you!)
There are just so many things...I hardly know where to begin! (hehehe)
Start with the text underneath each Icon...should be a way to eliminate or make transparent the area around the text. Or just do as I do and place all your icons on your Quick Launch Bar.
As for the graphic...well...it's so strange to see 'her' on your desktop considering the last 4 places I saw her. I'd give you the link except Todd's better half might be around.
Oh well...go back and tidy it up and when you're finished I want to inspect what you have done. And no dilly dallying, young man.

I am curious as to how often people change their desktop.
i change my wallpapers every day (i guess) and each platform has it's own.
but the rest of the desktop (the icon theme, the transparent taskbar...) is used for months.

the funny thing is :
some win-users try to replicate linux, some linux users try to replicate win and both try to replicate mac... :puzzled:

Start with the text underneath each Icon...should be a way to eliminate or make transparent the area around the text. Or just do as I do and place all your icons on your Quick Launch Bar.
Oh, there is - but on a white background it makes it hard to read. When hovered over, the grey background fades to a blue, and the icon grows slightly. If the background is dark, I normally have it transparent.
As for the graphic...well...it's so strange to see 'her' on your desktop considering the last 4 places I saw her. I'd give you the link except Todd's better half might be around.
That background is actually my favourite band's logo, mixed in with a nice anime image (practically every background I go through has some anime connection, or at the very least a Johnny The Homicadal Maniac connection)!
Oh well...go back and tidy it up and when you're finished I want to inspect what you have done. And no dilly dallying, young man.
The Self Appointed Desktop Art Critic...or Mr. to you.
It's not art, it's simplicity in an interface - you's can be keepin' you're multi-coloured whizbang alpha-blended menus, ta, I just want it so my icons are on my desktop for easy use and they aren't a complete eye-sore.
So come on "Mr." acushla - what's yours like?

Just installed WinXP on my computer so I'm still trying to decide how I'm going to set it up. I don't really like the defaults it uses, they are way too bright. They actually hurt my eyes sometimes, so I'm looking for some darker themes to spice up my windows a bit.

Actually, when I minimize QMP, the wallpaper is an astronomical photo. At work, I was using the "Defiant" skin (got it from deviant art) which fit perfectly with the wallpaper. I tried to download it, but they seem to have deleted all QCD skins from their site. I'll try to get it from my profile at work (they still haven't deleted it), if the computer guru will temporarily reactivate it. My quicklaunch bar is already loaded with all kinds of audio and video stuff http://beta.quinnware.com/forum/images/emots/wink.gif .

Beautiful. Is it possible to have any number of desktops and toggle between them at will?
Currently I am running the AlienGuise DarkStar SUITE...so if I was to choose just different desktops...but not mess with the rest of the suite, is that possible?
You have a number of very nice icons...Star Craft, Empire Earth, Quake 111 Arena etc...but then it occurred to me that these are probably games.

Yeah there all games... Starcraft is one of the best Real time Strategy games Ever created... One of those games that you create an army and Send it at the Enemy... Empire Earth is similar, Except Spans several ages throughout Earth's History... And a Few made up ones... And Quake 3 Is one of My favorite First person Shooters...
What is AlienGuise Darkstar Suite??? Nevermind I'll Just Google it...

I'm still looking at theme managers and skins to decide what I want to "tart" up ;) my desktop to look like.
Right now it's not too exciting, as you can see here (http://photobucket.com/albums/y212/Shadow-raven/?action=view¤t=Clipboard01.jpg).
Just installed WinXP for the first time on my computer and I'm still checking out all the options and tweaks. I hoping to use some of the really cool themes I've seen some of you guys use here. I hate the defaults, they are way too bright for me.
As some of you can see, I still use Webshots as my wallpaper manager. I've still never found a better one I like. I use an earlier version too as it is easier to extract any images from it than the newer versions are. It still works with the website too, so no need to upgrade. I doubt if I'll ever change it out for another manager. I keep all my wallpapers in it (and archived separately of course) and it rotates them once a day.

That is an older program called TClockEx (http://www.rcis.co.za/dale/tclockex/) at work. It allows you to enhance the Tray Clock by improving visibility, adding other information, or changing backgrounds and fonts used there. I've used it for years. The percentage shown is the amount of memory being used by my system at that time. The line at the bottom of it is the memory load line.

Cool... I'll try it out... But sysmetrix (http://www.xymantix.com/sysmetrix/index.html) already covers all of that.... And more... Including the ability to control QCD... Although What it does is based on what the Skin or Theme is set up for... Which most of the time is just a simple analog Clock... But if you look through DeviantArt there are several of them... Mostly for Large Resolutions... But you can find a gem, like that little Green bar in the Image I posted earlier....
I still think I'll try That clock

I have a pentium 4 prescott cpu. They just get hot. But the threshhold is high. I can have my cpu at 60C and still there's nothing to worry about. At 70C I might start to run into some problems. At any rate, if my machine does get too hot (which it wont :P) it will automatically reduce the clock speed from 2.8GHz to something lower. It my machine gets waaay too hot it will automatically shutdown. I say, no worries :)

nah he's just saying that he uses xmplay, like I use foobar, with qcd/mp not being our main players. Theres definitely nothing wrong with either of them, both fit different peoples tastes and needs quite nicely, and in terms of audio playback and stability, they beat qmp at the moment.
That could (and most probably will) change when qmp gets the mad input plugin along with the quirks and bugs ironed out of qmp. I still can't guarantee I'd use it, because foobar suits my needs nicely, but it will definitely be considered, as im sure roj will reevaluate qmp.

I dumped Norton about a year and a half ago and thought I got rid of it all. I can pretty much recite from memeory the processes I expect to see running when I open task manager. Imagine my surprise when I launch a program called EndItAll and see, yes, a Norton process running there. I can't recall ever seeing it in task manager, or even MSConfig for that manner. And yet there it was.
Evil.
Ain't life grand, bashing AOL and Norton on the same day?

Seriously...does this apply to EVERY application which is developed by NORTON.
The number one reason I choose to use NORTON was due to their SYSTEM WORKS app...which really amounts to a a basic diagnostic and maintenance program.
I honestly do not understand people who do not run at least something which is similar in scope.
I attribute the very smooth running of my computer in large part due to this program.
However...my computer definitely has upped the speed a notch in the last 10 minutes. LOL :bulb: :)

IMO, yes it does. When you say "I honestly do not understand people who do not run at least something which is similar in scope." which part exactly are you talking about? It always seemed to me to be replicating Window's own programs and/or features while slowing things down. I wouldn't let it near my system with a bargepole, personally.

I own the SystemWorks Professional which, besides their Anti-Virus program, also includes 'Norton Utilities'.
Quoting from the box; Fixes and prevents problems (nothing about causing problems, lol)
Computer problems can build up over time, so keep your PC running smoothly with NSWP. Use Norton Utilities to find, repair and prevent Windows and fix problems. (I haven't hijacked this thread, have I?) Remove unwanted files with Norton CleanSweep and Web Cleanup. (There is also a Connection Keep Alive for those who use Dial - Up.)
Stays prepared for emergencies
NSWP gives you powerful protection against disasters. (I like that.) Norton Ghost makes disk backups so simple that you may never go without them again. And NortonGoBack Personal Edition lets you restore your PC to a healthy state after a system crash, failed software installation, or other serious problem.
Rave Reviews include: "SystemWorks retains the effective optimization, monitoring, and diagnostic tools that we have come to expect from Seymantic." - PC World.
"...it still performs excelllently with many features Windows users will applaud." - Winplanet
"This suite has always been a classy, do it all, Swiss Army knive-like program." - CNET
It is the Utilities in particiular that I think I would find it difficult to live without...and, of course, that includes the monitoring processes that warn you when things are not right.
I know Roj mentioned some other applications which would do the same thing, albeit better (if only because they wern't NORTON, I imagine)...and I would hope that I will get some furthur advice on all of this.

Im with Acushla here. Norton isn't all bad. I've used their Utilities Suite since the dawn of time. Always fixed a whole butt-load of problems. By this day i do recognise there are better applications out there, but in the early days of the internet it was the best thing you could have. I only still run Norton Antivirus 2004 professional on my pc. It's not fast but at least windows recognises it and there seems to be a strange symbiosis between windows and symantec. Also it is force of habit. I, unlike most of you guys, never had a big problem with Norton on my systems. :bandit:

And guess what? It's no longer in service like the Concorde, the only passenger plane that could go faster than sound. It's the fast planes that become obsolete the quickest. I thought that the Blackbird was one of the highest flying planes too. The passengers would need a space suit when flying a Blackbird. Very cool indeed!

If you have any kind of filters or software that blocks ads or sites you may want to disable it while here, or check to see how it is configured. For some things here I have to disable my Hosts file, for others have my Internet filter bypassed or reconfigured. When I turn them off I can see the images. I've had that problem with a couple of posts here, Acushla's being one of them. Some software identifies his images as ads and block them.
I'd like to have that particular image as a full-size wallpaper without having to resize it. That ruins the clarity/quality of the image.

It does still hold that record as far as I know, it also holds the altitude record for an aircraft. It actual top speed and ceiling are still classified, but it's top speed is thought to be well in excess of the record. Not too bad for a plane that was designed and built in the 50's, eh? It's so loud because it uses ram-jets, which are better at high altitudes and speeds, but not quiet. Hardly matters where it flies though. We have one here at Wright-Patterson in the museum, but it still is secure, and watched.
That plane is one bad mutha'.

Yeah, whenever I can't see images, that's the first thing I go for. I check my filtering software to see if it is being naughty again. Almost always fixes the problem right away too. Glad you found your problem Todd, it can drive you crazy otherwise!

The bar is a free version of Object Dock by Stardock. I find the free version suite me fine and while the "pro" version has drawers or tabs ...I like the simple look of the plain dock. the wallpaper is from wincustomize. Stardock also has a free version of Windows Blinds but i find it to be less appealling than the dock...check it out...
hint: to hide the taskbar in windows completely. after having installed object dock then "auto hide" your taskbar...then in the Dock config tool check the hide windows taskbar again... when you need to access the "start" button you can simply hit the "windows" button next to control on your keyboard.

But seriously buddy, I'm going to have to go with gsb521 here. Either reduce the size or get a photobucket (or some such) and post a link to your full size image. Don't put an image link here, just a page link. You are now putting in image links. Bad form in the forum bud, it's going to piss off the natives!

Like most others who have viewed your 'desktop' I will add my voice to the chorus of 'cool'.
However...I do not understand how the 'levers' work. It would appear that there are a number of different programs attached to each. Is it similar to a 'start menu' where you simply click on the program and it opens?

SysMetrix....
http://www.xymantix.com/sysmetrix/index.html
It's capable of alot of things....But for Temps, it requres an outside program.... Motherboard Moniter...
http://mbm.livewiredev.com/
Either way.... Sysmetrix comes standard with a long list of capablilties... Several are listed... I'm not sure if all of them are..... One highlight is that it can control QMP... And you kinda gotta spend your time looking for the perfect skin... Sysmetrix will only do what the skins or themes tell it to....

OK. I worked it out. You did it using medium mode and resized manually.
It is just a pity that this sort of layout cannot be done in large mode and use the medium mode for the original QCD type layout.

It's a windows shell like explorer. It's supposed to be lightweight, but it consumes as much memory here as explorer. Yet, i love the interface and that there are cool themes with it. I realised that in qcd i need to check the box that concerns litestep otherwise i do not see qcd restored on my desktop. Maybe that's the association? :ermm:
Just try it out, maybe you'll like it too. I forgot to mention it is freeware (maybe opensource :puzzled: )

Any version of windows will do. Go here (http://beyondconvention.net/ohussain/lsinstaller/installation_guide.htm) for the installation guide.

The Explorer shell is more faster than this shit of litestep ... it's slow and long for nothing.

I replaced uxtheme.dll with a hacked version of the file so I wouldn't have to use any programs like Style XP. I found this visual style at deviantart. Also showing my foobar config.

Try :-
Tools >>> Prefs >>> Advanced >>> Programs and delete the JPG option. It's trying to open a program you've asked to open JPG's at some time, which now doesn't work, so getting rid of the option should go back to default behaviour.

I look at this and I'm of a split opinion. On the one hand it's pretty tasteless. On the other hand, it is an exhibit in an art gallery. Where does one draw the line?
I can't bring myself to censor something in an art gallery but on the other hand it's pretty beezarro.
I can only appeal to people to have some couth and show some judgement.

Shrug.
Look at it this way.
Art or ... erotica (let's say) - if I was viewing this at work and the CEO walked past my desk and saw the pic of Venus, he'd probably not pay any attention. If he saw me looking at that pic of Acushla's ... he probably would pay attention. Just .... give us some advance warning, or like make us click on something rather than just blat the screen, eh?
(freakout moment of the month - a chick's voice just came out of my computer saying "what would you like me to say? type anything you want!")

I've found a really cool programme that allows you to place any kind of widgets on your desktop. It's called 'konfabulator'. See www.konfabulator.com.
Here (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v405/RMI/screen.jpg) is what my desktop currently looks like. Note that the screen is split up between 2 monitors. :P
