I live in a neighborhood that is not wired for either DSL or cable internet (this is in Silicon Valley  ), and I was curious as to how many other folks here were still stuck with connecting through steam driven modems.

Curious about QCD for modem users: is there any function that performs too slow in QCD over modem? This is something I've taken into consideration, but never could test.

Comcast high speed cable, here. I think where I'm at it is 1.5 Megabits/sec download and 300-something-something kilobits/sec upload. (FYI, "something-something" technical jargon. :p )

I have ADSL, 512kb/sec no limits on transfers or any kind of limitation. :D
Only drawback is that the modem provided is a USB modem, intended for 1 computer but I have 2 computers at home so I bought an old HP Vectra as a "server".
In Panama we have only 1 mayor ISP and as they run the telephone service too in the whole coutry, they have banned the use of any other DSL modems except if you have a contract with them. There's also CableModem, but I live too far away from the node so I can't have Cable... :(
I'm still having modem    Why ain't there a crying smilie? Whta comes to Paul's question, what there's left since skins and plug-ins moved to the site. Gracenote, anythig else?(Don't use it myself)

ADSL 512/128 Kbps here. No download or upload limits whatsoever. The only bad thing about it is the price (50€/month)...

Im on a shared (like 50 people) 2048/512 kbit line. Works quite well expects for online first person shooter gaming. Around 150-200 kBytes/s most of the time and for something like 6$. :)

Having a cable connection with your ISP is also "shared." Physical bandwith divided by the number of users = your throughput. Excluding upgrades, of course. In most cases, having a 1.5mbps connection with your ISP is the same as a 3mbps connection, because you are only as fast as the other end can deliver.

Yeah it is!!!! Although it took them 45 days to get me hooked up. My local cable company is made up of worthless, lazy bums.

"alien telepathy"???
There's a poster over at MozillaZine (http://www.mozillazine.org), another forum that I visit, that claims he's an alien life form and that aliens abduct him frequently...

Free (as in beer) 26.4 Kbps throughput from the Local University. I would spring for cable or DSL but the last mile really blows up here and I cant get either service. Oh and Paul, e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g. is slow when youre on a modem. We deal with it. :D

ADSL 512/128 Kbps is my internet connection. Sometimes a bit faster and at other times a bit slower. As long as i can stream music with 128 kbps im happy :)
