View Full Version : OK - I hereby impose order over chaos!!
NOT!!!
But I did have an idea in the shower just now (where incidentally, I get most of my truly brilliant ideas - actually there or on the bus)...
THERE!!!
Did you see that???
An idea that immediately exploded into a million possibilities usually branded as "off topic". A fair number of threads seem to go that way lately. That doesn't bother me, but it may bother other folks. And then I thought:
That whole concept is the soul of JAZZ. Miles. From mind to mouth to the world. Chaotic random order.
JAZZ.
So here's the deal. The technical forums shouldn't see that kind of stuff (and mostly they don't - they're... player technical). The Audiophile forum (where yours truly presides in pristine yet subdued splendor - LOL!) is fair game, as are quite possibly the other forums grouped under Community.
BUT...
...in due deference to those who prefer a more structured existence, perhaps we need some nomenclature.
For those threads started with that possibility (usually some kind of topic that may provoke diverse controvery), what if we preceded the title of the thread with the word JAZZ?
It would look like this:
JAZZ: The Existential Reasoning Behind Purchasing Flat-Panel Speakers
That way, those who like that sort of discussion will gravitate to it, those who don't won't and those who like to dabble on occasion will have a menu. :)
Whatcha all think?

JAZZ requires that you know the thread will work its way into jazz when you start that thread. I would imagine most people starting a thread want to keep it on topic, at least until their question is answered.
So my question is, should someone buying a ticket to a classical music concert be forced to sit through the lovely dischord called jazz?
But if you're flexible in your musical taste and thread direction, Jazz rocks. :cheeky:

not a bad idea though, precluding the topic with a 'key' of sorts indicating whether or not off topic discussion acceptable...adherence, however is an entirely different story.

The only problem is, the thread topic wanders, and you think, what's it about now? You see there was a new post in "Michael Jackson ... " and you think, hmmm, not interested. But it's all about copyright law now. So you get to the point where someone has made a new post in Skins, entitled, "Bug In GetNextPosWithRespectToTime_Ex_64" and I have to go and check that anyway just in case it might have gravitated onto a discussion on the rights of mankind.
(the reader should reword the above so I sound less flighty and hysterical).
I don't mind threads wandering somewhat off topic, but the title is there for a reason; to help us filter what we read.
In the current case, we have at least two threads dealing with copyright law that might benefit from being in one thread. I'm almost surprised people haven't started crossposting http://quinnware.com/forum/images/emots/cheeky.gif
Anyway, it probably should just be a case of someone noticing that the thread has drifted onto a new topic at which point someone says "moderator - please snip this last section into a new thread". Voila, non?

IT WAS ALL ROJ'S FAULT...THAT'S WHY HE'S TRYING DESPARATELY TO DRAW OUR ATTENTION AWAY FROM THIS FACT AND MAKE US THINK THERE IS A SOLUTION TO 'WHEN THREADS GO WRONG.' DON'T BE FOOLED BY HIS CRAZY JAZZ IN THE SHOWER THINKING. WANT PROOF? OK...HERE'S THE PROOF:
Anybody who has followed Californian politics will tell you first and foremost that the private Arnold is a very intelligent and astute man, not to be underestimated.
I realize that Arnold is indeed very intelligent and a tremendously shrewd businessman. However, his policy of kissing the ass of the entertainment industry and raping the rights of consumers re: "fair use" and copy protection is VERY offensive.
Might it be because he's an actor and his original power base IS the entertainment industry?
Some backup:
http://www.mofo.com/news/updates/files/update1065.html
...and the utterly moronic SB 1506:
http://www.eff.org/Privacy/Anonymit...0317_eff_pr.php (http://www.eff.org/Privacy/Anonymity/20040317_eff_pr.php)
http://www.grammy.com/news/artswatc...cdsecurity.aspx (http://www.grammy.com/news/artswatch/2004/0927cdsecurity.aspx)
In short, he ain't the shining knight you're making him out to be and California's growing record in that area is not a good one for consumer rights. I sure hope the rest of the Union doesn't suffer from the heatstroke that California lawmakers obviously do.
YOUR WELCOME!

Yeah, self-restraint. I think I've heard of that before. It's a little kinky though and the leather gear is supposed to be expensive. Doesn't do much for me, but if that's your thing, have at it.

Stewart Copeland

It won't work.
It has one major drawback that was raised, namely that you'd have to know up front what would go JAZZY.
I had hoped that to offset that, you could change thread titles after the fact.
You can't.
