What was the last DVD-AUDIO, SACD. CD, VINYL, CASSETTE or 8 TRACK music you bought. Why did you buy it? Had you heard it before? Never heard it? Liked it? Hated it?
I bought the SACD version of Miles Davis 'Live Evil' and...er...yeah...I've heard it a couple of times before. Very happy, sounded GREAT...I love this man's music, anything from about 1959 on

the last music I bought myself was a CD with Lounge music on it... some obscure cd-label found through one of the media discounters here in the Netherlands. It is called "The best of Lounge: New York Lounge"... very nice cd. Just found it by accident.
the last music I got was the latest CD from U2, "How to dismantle an atomic bomb" (limited edition) :) which I got last Christmas.

Steve Vai's latest album. I've not listened to it before I bought it. Why: I'm a Vai devotee. Verdict so far: pretty good overall, some brilliant spots.

Les Horribles Cernettes - Collider.
Bought it off the web by impulse because
1. It's nerdy. You don't see much nerdy music
2. Free shipping
3. Fairly sure I was not in good condition and doing some internet retail therapy. 3 consecutive crappy weekends (chronic sunburn, busted kneecap, food poisoning) - how can a guy resist burning the CC over the net?
Fortunately I've been in top condition for some time and able to resist the lure of impulse buys.
As for Collider? *shrug*. It's pop. Yes it's nerdy, yes it's lyrically amusing, but musically it's still pretty pop.

A sampler named "Latin Garden", mainly because of one specific song I heard in France last summer, and I only found it because it was played in a music shop. What a luck! It's so great! And the new LP from Moby, "Hotel". Because I like his music. But this LP is not that great.

Groove Armada - Vertigo
I have long had it in mp3 format but for me that CD was one where almost all of the tracks held an apeal for me so I tried to buy it. I quickly discovered that it was hard to get. Then I found it used. unfortunately, when I got it home, the last two tracks were screwed up so I took it back. Then I found it - for $25CDN. A ripoff but at that point I had to have it so I sprung the necessary change for it. The price was an obscenity.
Before that it was Thievery Corporatiopn's newest. I could have downloaded it lossless but I wanted to support them and it was on sale (which is when I normally buy CDs) for $17CDN so...
I do not buy without listening first. I download it and after hearing it decide if I want to buy it.

The cd I mentioned is quite okay, but one other from that series of cd's, called 'LA Lounge' was quite horrid. luckily I was able to listen to it in the store, otherwise I would have bought a monster :)

I do not know about Ottawa (in this regard) but here in Toronto you can go into any one of the major Music Stores and find anything you want and take it to a listening station where the CD will be unwrapped and put into a player. You then put on a pair of (SONY) Headphones and listen. You can do this all day because there have been days that I have done that.
Of course...unlike me...you have a real job and purpose in life...so it might be a little more difficult for you to spend a day...but I'm certain you can find an hour here and there.
To think the rest of Canada thinks Toronto is a bad city! I guess this proves otherwise, huh?

Most of the music I buy now is CDs from local artists I'll pick up at their shows. Two thoughts. I know I won't find it online and I have to believe a higher portion of the price goes to the artist. Afterall, some of them look like they were burned/printed on their home pc. It's nice to cut out the middleman.

I've heard of Groove Armada and Theivery Corporation, and I think I've heard their music and liked it, but I can't remember for sure. What kind of music do they do, if you can describe it? I've found it hard to dl their music on the web so I could get an idea of it.

It's been a long time since I've bought a CD because they are too expensive and I just couldn't justify the expense. That said, I think the last CD I bought was Gary Numan - Telekon. For my wife it would be the 2 newest CD's by Melissa Etheridge. My next purchases will probably CD's by Amethystium, Delerium, and Enigma. I've been mostly dling mp3's because that is what I could afford. I have to be able to justify spending the money on a CD now more than I used to.

I think Groove Armada probably belongs in the "Lounge" section. It certainly makes me want to lie down. heh.
Thievery Corporation is altogether "darker", and fantastic. Most of their stuff anyway, but not all. The Thievery Corporation are all over the internet. You might also like to try Massive Attack, Dead Can Dance and Zero 7. All superb.

If it is talent, creativity and the unusual that you enjoy, then I recommend that you check out Bjork...if you haven't already done so. Personally I believe a strong case could be made to suggest that 'Homogenic' is her best work...Unfortuneatly it is not yet available on DVD-AUDIO or SACD...but you will find the quality of the CD to be a revelation.

Seriosuly though, Ottawa is a very pretty city too - although I prefer to live in Kanata outside of it (Kanata got amalgamated into Ottawa in the Great Gulp several years ago when Ottawa absorbed several outlying cities). Kanata is very similar to Calgary.

Or you could try my latest "discoveries" - Feist (absolutely angelic voice and VERY good production), Interpol (It's like the eighties never went away), The Friends of Dean Martinez (lounge, I imagine).
If you like Dead Can Dance you should try a search for Lisa Gerrard, most prolific.
One for you Canadians - have any of you guys heard of a band called The Hidden Cameras. Man, do these guys have a good ear for a tune (although I should point out that they appear to perform while dressed in ladies clothes). And you might not want to listen to the lyrics too closely either.
EDIT - Acushla, does your "friend" have any more brown packages? I'm running out here. ;)

All (mostly) in the spirit of 'rah, rah, rah, MY TOWN...boo, boo, boo YOUR TOWN...yes,,,Ottawa is nice...if you like Disneyland. Since Ottawa is a 'capital' every effort is made to present a squeaky clean ideal, we have no problems (homeless etc.) here. Not even a 'red light district'! From what I understand Tricky was the inventor of the music style called Trip Hop as well.
And you're right about the Fifth Element. My wife thinks I'm crazy, but I told her that I think it is one of the best movies ever made. Luc Besson is a great director. I will concede that the actor who played Robin had his character down as about as good as one could expect of an actor...however...I was actually hoping you hadn't watched it. I considered it one of the worst things I have seen on TV in a very long while. I didn't even bother to watch it to the end.
I auditioned a number of center speakers and finally settled on the MISSION M3C2. This blends very nicely with the ACOUSTAT MODEL TWO + TWO...surprisingly so to be honest. Very, very nice...I am totally satisfied. For now.

I know what you mean about the unlikehood of the Stones and Moby...except that it was the Stones 'Unplugged'...which, in a stretch, sort of makes sense. I guess.
I've done some searching around on the web and learned a little bit about him...a very interesting man.
Somebody highly recommended an album called Play (The B Sides)...which I promptly entered into SEARCH. Nothing. So I entered Moby...over 4000 items came up...NOT ONE OF WHICH WAS A COMPLETE ALBUM! Everything was individual tracks. I have NEVER seen this...what gives?
I was able to get 'Memory Gospel' and 'Whispering Wind' which are part of 'Play (The B Sides)...haven't played them yet.

Play is Moby's best album by a mile. When you do get Play have a listen, then listen to 18. See if you notice anything?
An example of just how pedantic I can be - If you rate each track out of three, making downbeat tracks a 1, upbeat tracks a 3, neither up nor down a 2. Write it all down, then listen to 18 and do the same. They're identical. Music by numbers.
Oh, and Hotel is indeed PANTS.

The most recent music I bought are now two albums from Moby... 18 and Play (heard some good things about them, and indeed I like the albums). and one album from The Corrs (Borrowed Heaven, also a very good album, though in no way related to the music of Moby :) )
They were lying on a shelve in the recordstore for 3 for 25 Euros. Which is no money at all.

Fantomas - Suspended Animation
Mike Patton describes this album as "cartoon music" add some metal and electronic bizarreness and you'd be right.
not their best album but still good, if you're a fan you'll like it, if not this won't make you like them.
the directors cut is their 'tribute' to Henry Mancini album if you guys are keen to hear some of the old movie themes in thrash metal/electronic mode... weird but very good.
this isn't the best link (http://www.ipecac.com/discography.php) but it does provide some samples.

Finally got around to watching the 2 Disc Box Set of 'Heat' which I've been meaning to get to for some time now.
I noticed on the music credits at the end of the film that Brian Eno contributed to the sound track.
Imagine my surprise while watching Disc 2 - DVD Extras, when Moby shows up on screen explaining the two pieces of music he composed which was used in the two scenes where Robert De Niro and Al Pachino are together!

I'm not sure why...well actually I am sure...I happened to be somewhere and 'House of the Rising Sun' was being played...and a very fine performance it was. I listened closely at the end of the song and the announcer revealed it was Waylon Jennings.
Now I don't know a lot about country music...and to my knowledge had never heard him before...but I knew enough to know that he is a major player in the country field. Since I liked his version of 'House' I thought it would be interesting just to download a s#%tload of his material and have a listen.
While I was at it I decided to also download Patsy Cline, Connie Francis (!), Dinah Washington, Nina Simone, Josephine Baker, and .Edith Piaf. All of it was interesting if you simply remained objective and didn't think in terms of like/dislike. Waylon turned out to be the most interesting of them all. Often he was joined by the likes of Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. At the end you are left with the overwhelming realization that their world consists primarily of men who are bad and cheat on their wifes...and wifes who are always understanding and forgiving.
After listening to everything I ended up by going out and buying Josephine Baker and Edith Piaf.
Discovered another artist of the sort that makes you realize why you love music in the first place. An artist who moves me in a way that few have as of late. And from a most unlikely source. The Gospel Blues stylings of Sister Rosetta Tharpe. I cannot get enough of her. I think my neighbours are singing the songs when they take their showers. I'm going to start downloading a ton of Gospel and wade through it all and see what I come up with.
Any suggestions?

2. Let Me Down Slow (or I may break a hip)
3. It Won't Take Long (don't have much time)
12. Laugh, I Nearly Died (heart failure)

Many here will be more familiar with the background of 'Guerolito' by Beck than I am...save to say that I do understand this to be a series of remixes of his last album.
Whatever it is I really like it. I have one other Beck album...'Sea Changes' and although there is a thin thread (electronic colourings and accents) this is a totally different album. Not necessarily better (although I do think this album is more musically challenging and diverse)...but different.
Where 'Sea Changes' is heavy on the 'sentimentality' chord...this album is much more upbeat and in your face. Many current musical genres are used as starting points but Beck (or whoever is doing the remixing) always manages to build upon that foundation and turn it into something far more current.
An immensely listenable album that I just can't seem to get enough of.
One word of caution. Very few albums ever present a challenge to my audio system...in fact only one album in the past has presented bass which pushed my sub-woofer beyond the limits of where the crossover is currently set. This album joins that exclusive club...a dynamic range that has convinced me I need to unplug everything, remove the interface from the electrostatics and tweak the crossover so as the sub will be able to reproduce this album with no distortion.
A 1 - 2 hour job.
This album joins that exclusive club...

Imagine that you have a favorite musician or a favorite musical group. Imagine that you are in a different country from your own and searching through that artists section in a music store. Imagine you come across a 'live' recording of that artist you have never seen before, Imagine you purchase it and when you get it home and open it up you discover not one...not two...but three CD's.
This is exactly what happened to me in Detroit. The CD in question is Miles Davis 'Munich Concert' recorded in 1988. The ensemble is comprised of Miles Davis on trumpet and keyboards, Kenny Garrett on Saxophone, Bobby Irving and Adam Holzman on Keyboards, Benjamin Rietveld on Bass, Marilyn Mazur on Percussion, Joseph 'Foley' McCreary on Guitar and Ricky Wellman on Drums.
Musically this album could have easily been entitled 'We Want The Funk' as Funk is the foundation for most of the tracks included. The band is allowed to stretch out on all 3 discs and the emphasis seems to be on having fun and being entertaining...rather than 'heavy' and 'virtuoso'. Sometimes you just want to have fun. This is a very inspired ensemble, with everyone playing as a team and contributing fine solos. I have a particular liking for guitar and although McCreary won't get any points for innovation, he sure gets my vote for invoking thrills and chills. The quality of the recoding is second to none.
A bonus track of 35:04...'Call It Anything' is included. The band here is comprised of 7 musicians, Gary Bartz on Saxophone, Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett on Keyboards, the world's greatest Bass Guitarist...Dave Holland (yes I know who John Entwistle is), Jack DeJohnette on Drums, Airto Moreia Percussion...and of course Miles on trumpet. An excellent line up and a touring unit many considered to be Mile's best. The track was recorded in 1970 at the Isle of Wight Festival.
Now...Imagine that all this cost... $18.99. Could this be a sign the 'tide has turned'?
I think I'll be going to Detroit a little more often.

OK...today I bought a 2002 release of a Frank Zappa Album titled 'Halloween'.
The 14 tracks are taken from 5 shows which culminated in a 4 hour show on Halloween night performed at The Palladium in New York City late in October, 1978. All shows were recorded on 24 track analog tapes by Joe Cicarelli. After each show Frank immediately went into the studio and physically excised masters from the original tapes with a razor blade. The stuff he liked the best he compiled together on master reels. In order to create 70 minutes of music which would sound like one complete show all of the tapes were heard in order to create is disc.
The band is in fine form and there are many crowd pleaser's including 'Dancin' Fool', 'Don't Eat The Yellow Snow', 'Stink-Foot' and 'Dinah-Moe Humm'. There are other, lesser know, stellar tracks including an amazing display of guitar virtuoso spanning 17 minutes and 14 seconds in a track titled 'Black Napkins (The Danceless Horsie).'
It is well know that Frank Zappa was 'way ahead of the techno-curve (as usual) back in the seventies (quad) [see rorythedog...I can mix it up anywhere:silly: ], through to digital and into the early nineties with his multi-channel (6) playback system at home. It's quite clear that Frank envisioned his multi-track recordings in a multi-channel format.'
So who mixed this DVD-Audio disc? That's right, the same man who was there and recorded the original shows...Joe Cicarelli.
I have come to realize that ‘Multi channel’ recordings, engineered correctly, excel in the presentation of ‘live’ concerts. There is an element of atmosphere created that simply cannot be matched by two channel sound. Incredible detail, one example being the rear hall slap back echo of Frank's guitar. Hearing the nuances between the two electric basses. With this recording you are in the middle of the hall and if you close your eyes you are actually there.
A treasure.

BTW: My 400th CD! I started from zero again, when I moved to Japan (not by air plane, but by container ship) ten years ago.

I've been trrying to find an illegitimate copy of this forever. I might have to bite the bullet and buy it myself. A fantastic piece of music. Have you heard the brass band version as heard in the film 'Brassed Off'? Superb!

This particular performer? If you are not so fussy about that, I know there are many versions of it available on the donkeys.
As for the brass version, I have not. Now I have yet another Piece Of Music To Check Out Before I Die. Thanks for the heads up!
Try the Miles Davis take on it too, very interesting interpretation.

ICU Generation Trance 2000.
I've been listening to this quite a lot and so bumped it up my shortlist of music to buy. That and the fact that the version I had was a not-quite-perfect rip. Soon to be rectified.

Charlie Winston's EP. I saw him at a free live music night in Bath, main act was Josh Pyke, but Charlie totally blew me away. He is absolutely awesome live, I recommend checking him out if at all possible... if anyone likes accoustic(ish) music. Just listening to the EP now, it's not as good as the live gig .. but then, nothing I've seen compares to his live show. Loved it.

No recorded music should ever upstage a live performance by the same artist. The live gig is always the true test.

Tom Waits - Orphans (http://www.anti.com/catalog.php?id=69)
I am unable to remember the last time an album excited and impressed me the way this 3 CD Boxed Set has.
Life is once again worth living and the music industry is somewhat forgiven and I'm listening again.
Fine music...fine lyrics.
Can you say masterpiece?
Who is Tom Waits (http://www.anti.com/artist.php?id=1)?

Yeah, I do recall hearing some of that. I think it was okay, but I was a little disappointed by it - had higher hopes.
There was another band ...Necrophagist's Epitaph. That was pretty good tech metal.
More tech than Negativa.
And if you want grinding death tech metal, dude, you gotta listen to Lycathea Aflame. Brilliant stuff. And actually happy positive lyrics. The drumming is absolutely awesomely top notch.

yeah dude true, they go off on a tangent.
as far as 'full on intense as fuck death metal' gorguts reign supreme.
negativa are not that same beast at all.
however, this is technically only their demo so... we'll see.
Lycathea Aflame aye, i'll see what i can find.
currently caning the gayest dialup speed slingshot has.
