No, not classical music. Just whatever genre you like without words. What are your faves?
Metallica - The Call of Ktulu, especially S&M version
Metallica - Orion
Everclear - El Distorto de Melodica
On the other end, I find Hendrix's "The star spangled banner" totally atrocious. And disgracing. I can't listen to 20 seconds of that and not wince.

Trance definitely. In general there aren't any lyrics or just a couple of sentences meaning very little. Nevertheless, this type of electronic music really puts me into a state of mind that i can only, well... describe as being in a trance (sorry for the pun :skull:), which i really think is fantastic. I love when bits of classical music are incorporated into trance (c.f. Tiesto), especially with bits of Bach, the best and most genius of composers of all time.

Ouch! This was going to be my pick...perhaps I should choose something by Karlhinz Stockhausen (Carre fur 4 Orchester und Chore) or John Cage (Ryoani) or Luigui Nono ((Post-Prae-Ludium Per Donau) or Iannis Xenakis (La legende d'Eer 8 channel electronic tape) or Tristan Murail (Ethers) or George Crumb (Piano) or Magnus Lindberg (Joy) or Pierre Boulez (Repons) or Henryk Mikolaj Gorecki (Trzy utwory dawnym...) or Rene Clemencie (Le Combat du Dragon [Drachenkampf]) or Wolfgang Rihm (Dunkles Spiel) and who can forget Volker David Kirchner's 'Bildnisse 1 fur Orchester'? (Did I miss anybody?) Of course no list like this would be complete without mentioning 'Ghost Riders In The Sky' by The Ventures. I might have included other titles as the best representations of the various composers works but these were the only ones I knew how to spell. I know...I know...some of you are looking up my profile muttering to yourselves '...but I thought he said he lived in North America. Well...yes I do...it's just that I have spent a lot of time in Europe. It doesn't show does it?

well, acushla, that seems like a rather large list. i dont even have that many songs w/o words. but a song i do have that has some words in the background of 15 seconds only is
Metallica - To Live is to die.
Its some sort of unofficial tribute to cliff burton, and it he wrote the bass riffs before he died, so they decided to finish it. the lyrics it does have were some words he put together. Anyway, its a really good song, and ive actually tabbed it for drums. and that means i had patience to listen to it for hours and hours.
anyway, 3 metallicas, 1 non-metallica. im sure u can all tell what type of playlist i have going here.

Hey...if it's a long list you want I can give you that too. One thing I have noticed is that some band by the name of 'Metallica' gets mentioned in this forum a lot. Perhaps I need to go and check out some of their material. I understand they are featured in some documentary type movie. If I go and see the film ... am I going to come away having heard them play some of their music on stage? In other words...would this be a good introduction to the band? If not...then what would you recommend?
gsb521
03-14-2005, 12:53 AM
i personally havent seen the movie, and i should, cuz i have all their music. i dont think that it would be a good introduction, because its about them as a band, not their music, and frankly, their recent band relations have been really wierd. over the last few years they totally fell apart, and they are a mess. if u try their stuff, start with the goodies - master of puppets or maybe the black album (called metallica). the earlier stuff is heavier (and better imo), and their newer (post 80's) is not nearly as good.
enjoy.

for those who like their drums QUICK
MORBID ANGELs - DRUM CHECK from their album HERETIC just rules
i'm squashing and zipping it right now for emailing if anyone has trouble finding it...
dark angel - cauterization.
joe satriani - surfing with the alien, although i'm still building my joe collection.
oh yeah and what's that led zeppelin tune? the one with the drumming...:cheeky:
acushla - s&m is a metallica album they recorded with the (have to google) orchestra, some songs REALLY work well, most however suck, any metallica album post "black" sucks, old stuff is much better especially "...justice" and "master"
their movie is "some kind of monster" it's a biography of sorts and i've not seen it either.
"star spangled banner" by hendrix is horrific

"star spangled banner" by hendrix is horrific
Well..I attempted to address this by listing a number of 'New Music' composers and compositions...music created in ways that we have not heard before. That didn't seem to work so now I'll try Plan B.
Hendrix's reinvention of the 'Star Spangled Banner' is not only powerful , it is brilliant. To those of us living in the US at the height of Vietnam what we heard was a protest piece...Jimi had dispensed with the rhetoric and chose to voice/express his feeling for America and the war by taking the nations Anthem and making it immediate...a here and now reality that purposely incorporated discords and chaos to reflect an America involved in a war gone horribly wrong.
There is no Plan C.

what's that led zeppelin tune? the one with the drumming...:cheeky:.
I think its probably Kashmir. Great tune.
Edit: No, its could be Whole Lotta Love that has a load of drumming in the middle but its not really an instrumental then again Kashmir isn't a instrumental either .
I like
Dick Dale & His Del-Tones - Misirlou (Pulp fiction)
Rob D. - Clubbed To Death also good
Joe Satriani - Surfing With The Alien
Thomas Newman - Any Other Name (American Beauty)
and loads more i can't think of at the moment

Your reference to Pulp Fiction reminded me of Nancy Sinatra singing '(These Boots) Are Made for Walking.'
I also like 'Broken English' by Marianne Faithful. It amazes me through an exercise such as this one just how many songs mean so much to me...I'm sure all of you experience the same reaction.

Moby (other Moby) brought out a new album, 'Hotel'. There's still the fair share of synthesisers and resembles his previous albums very closely ('Play' and '18'). It's not bad, but i cant help thinking that Moby just doesnt have the singing voice. He should take some lessons :)

OK, here are my picks (in no particular order):
Crusaders - Rainbow Visions
Trashmen - Malaguena
Steve Vai - Blue Powder
Eric Johnson - Manhattan
George Benson - Breezin'
Joe Satriani -Surfin' with the Alien
Also Jimi's Star Spangled Banner, this one's already been discussed, you either get it or you don't. (hint: it ain't just about the music)
As for Metallica, I'm no longer a fan, due to their attitude towards the people who made them rich.

just for u max, overture 1928 is really good. and those drums are insane.
basically, my only complaint about the band (and id actually like u to comment on it) is that the guitar solos (and i notice that they are there, which bumps it up quite a bit) are too high and scratchy for me.

You read my mind...where is Santana? Is it just me or is it a truism that in virtually any discussion of great guitarists you ALWAYS see Clapton and Hendrix but rarely Carlos. Why is that? I personally consider him to be the greatest living guitarest...although I admit I do not know what John McLaughlin is doing these days.
