View Full Version : unable to encode
Let be be the first to start a thread in this group.
I am not able to encode (convert) from CD to MP3 or WMA. I get a "could not open encoding plug in. Stopping encoding" prompt.
I have re installed the plugins and have WMA ver 8 on my Win98SE system. I have Digital extraction selected and am able to play CD's OK.
CDEX works for me so i think my hardware is OK. A previous post recommended using KillASPI to delete than reinstall the ASPI drivers but that had no effect for me. Any thoughts any of you Tech wizards?

I have some encoding problems as well. Most of the time it works just fine, but on some cd's I get "Could not open output file". If I try ripping the same cd in Wavelab, it works fine.
Have to add that I'm talking about original cd's without any kind of "ripstoppers".
Anyone else experienced this?
"could not open encoding plug in. Stopping encoding"
I'm trying to find the reason for this error appearing. It seems quite common, but of course, doesn't happen to me. Stay tuned.

Excellent.
Thanks :)

I've reproduced this error and tracked it down to some CDs that have non-standard table of contents. If you find that this problem only occurs with some CDs then you are having this issue. If the problem occurs for all CDs, I've yet to reproduce the bug. The fix to the the former will be in the next release.

By Non-Standard TOC are you talking about defective (Copy-Protected) CDs? Would be cool if QCD could play/rip those...
Let me know if 4.11 helps this issue any.

I just downloaded 4.11 and I still get this problem. I have tried to encode two different CDs and get the same problem with both. I have also tried it using my cdrom and my cd-rw, both with the same behavior. I can encode using musicmatch without any problem. I am using Win98SE. My soundcard is a Echo MiaMIDI.

I just tried playing Melanie C's latest album which is copy-protected and it worked! First track started playing right away.
Switched to the encoder, first track would not rip, it would be stuck at 00:00 and the CD Drive light flashing like crazy. I clicked Stop, unchecked the first track and it's currently at track 5 so it seems to work. I'll test the files after it finished.
I have Damhnait Doyle's new album which is also copy-protected ready to put to the test right after...
The first track has always been tricky, even with ISOBuster (Which I have been using for CD-Ripping of Protected CDs), the trick was usually to make ISOBuster "Play Audio" on each tracks one by one from the last to the first and while the first track was playing, to hit the "Extract To WAV" option and that would work. I did the same with QCD (Kinda) the first track was playing, then I switched to the encoder and told it to encode from the first one (Got the "Stop playback before encoding" dialog)
More on this as my tests continue... If this can defeat CD Copy-Protection I will be spreading the word about QCD a whole lot more than I am now.
I tried the same CD (U2 best of 90-00)on two different computers with the same version of QCD (4.10, Oct 9th). The Win98SE laptop would not allow me to encode but the Winxp home Desktop would.
Tried Ver 4.11- no difference

Haven't had any problems ripping since upgrading to 4.11 :)
Only tried original cd's without copy protection.
(Would never by a copy protected cd. It's a scam)

Me, too! I have the same problem, I am not able to encode(record) from CD to MP3 or WMA!. I guess, the problem is a kind of conflict with Windows 98 and SE. I did a test. I installed on the Windows 2000 Professional last week. It works without problems!
Paul, are you still supporting QCD in the Win98SE enviroment? I would like to get the encoding working but its not a make or break issue for me. Can't speak for the rest of the user of course.

Nope. Happened again.
Qcd 4.11
Xp Sp1
Mike, yes QCD is set to work with Win98.
Lynott, 'can't open output file'? Have you tried setting a different encoding destination folder? A different filename template (or <no template>)?
Thanks for the info paul. I run through a few senarios to try and help you nail it down.
I set the output path to C:\Temp (known valid folder) and set the template to "no template".
The generic MP3 encoder gives "could not open output file" and then gives "could not open encoding plugin. stopping encoding"
The Lame MP3 gives "error opening output file" and then the "stopping encoding"
The WAV encoder gives "could not create output file" and then the "stopping encoding" and the WMA only gives the second error.
Ussually when i close QCD after i attempt to encode i get "program has performed an illegal function ...
QCDPLAYER caused an invalid page fault in
module LAME_ENC.DLL at 018f:049acb04.
Hopes that this info sheds a little light on the subject

Paul, first of all, it only happens on some albums.
I chanced the filename template(folder only), and now it works just fine :)
I had "%ARTALB%\%ALBUM% - %YEAR%" which caused the problem. I removed the spaces after "album" and before "Year", and that did the trick (%ARTALB%\%ALBUM%-%YEAR%)
Problem solved ;)

I believe I am experiencing a similar problem on my PC, which is running Win2K. If I try to encode a song from a CD while I am logged on as a regular user, I get the above message. However, if I sign on as a local administrator, I can successfully encode. I have already granted full access to the QCD program directory to my regular user ID, with no apparent effect.

First of all - this is a great product I just started to use. I got this error using 4.11 and Win98. I had no luck with what was suggested in this thread. I took the same CD put in my other CD Rom Drive that is not a DVD reader drive and the encoding worked fine. So I figure you might have to try adjusting settings on your CD-Rom either in Windows or BIOS that have to do with DMA. I know that helped when I got errors in NERO when burning CDs.

The same problem... But on WinXPSP1.
Have no problems with other apps.
For anyone getting the "Could not open encoding plugin! Stopping encoding." message when encoding, can you do a search on your PC for the following file "CddbMp3ProEnc.dll" and let me know if it exists at all, in any folder. That will go far in solving this issue.

I did not find the requested file. I see cddbmp3enc.dll and cddbmp3prodec.dll
Have fun

I also found the same DLLs on Win2K.
Please note that my concern is that I should be able to encode even though my Win2K logon is not as an administrator. Or is that even possible?

Ok, the DLLs are not the problem. Try B69 and see if you get a different error msg.
Ok, the DLLs are not the problem. Try B69 and see if you get a different error msg.Ok, i tried. I got the same message and some kind of another... Sorry, did not remeber :(
Next, i installed 4.11 again and problem disappeared :)
Strange a bit.... I'm sure, it's QCD problem, i did all this actions in a few minutes.......
Oh, not again.....
It appeared!!!!!
Maybe that's because of skins
I've just installed some, tried to encode and got that message...
Operations that i did before wasn't helped.
I also am unable to encode, but only with the ogg plug-in. Otherwise it seems to be working fine. The problem is that I REALLY prefer OGG, and using the QCD encoder has somehow completely disabled FreeRip, which is the other programme I know I could use. I have uninstalled and re-installed each programme seperately, and have used System Mechanic to clean up the registry each time. Still nothing. Free rip can't find my cd players at all, even on cd's it ripped only yesterday.

Do you get any error msgs with Ogg?
Do you get any error msgs with Ogg?Well, yes, the same one everyone else is reporting in this thread. But it just got wierder. I changed the options for the path and filename to match what I was getting with freerip, and that fixed the problem. Now it's recording fine. Just to check, I switched back to the default, and got the " can't open encoder" message. My problem's fixed in other words.
So good luck!!
By the way--GREAT player!

What did you switch back to to get the error? What is 'default'?

Hey,
I switched back to what come up as the template when you first open the encoder and go into settings, after I added the ogg plug-in, which is the template at the top of the list.
So just to give as much detail as possible--I downloaded qcd, then downloaded the plug-in via the template window, which by the way, didn't work until I rebooted. I tried just exiting various windows, then turning of qcd, but I actually had to restart. Then I picked ogg as the encoder, and tried to encode a cd which I had in my cd-r. then I go the message "could not open encoding plug-in! Stopping encoding."
Anyway, then I did what I told you about changing the track and filename, and it worked fine.
Then I switched it back, and it didn't. By the way, it worked for MP3 no prob. And it also failed as above on other cd's
Whoa!!!
I just tried moving the cd down to my Sony cd-rw, and it seems to be working fine.
wierder and wierder.

Great product! Anyway, here goes.
I have been using QCD for a few months and have had no problems. That is until I changed my normal login account from Admin to Power User. Once I did this, the problem(s) described in this thread began so I ended up here (I could not encode ANY cd). Once I started QCD with Admin credentials or logged in as an Admin I was able to endcode once again and the issue was/is no more.
Thus far this is the only issue with QCD and a non Admin account I have seen. For what it's worth, I even re-installed QCD with a non-admin account without problems. I am using XP pro.
Try/confirm...??
Frio
I've reproduced this error and tracked it down to some CDs that have non-standard table of contents. If you find that this problem only occurs with some CDs then you are having this issue. If the problem occurs for all CDs, I've yet to reproduce the bug. The fix to the the former will be in the next release.

Very interesting.
I had experienced a bug with playing back a wma file that was created using something other than QCD (I didn't create it) which Paul couldn't seem to recreate. To narrow down the problem, which was occurring on my win2k machine at work, I thought I would try encoding a file to wma through QCD and its related plugin on my home machine (winXP). I was then sidetracked by this very issue of silent failure when attempting to encode to wma.
Also, on the issue of ripping copyprotected CDs, I think I have a copyprotected CD that I tried to rip. That is to say, ripped fine on my home machine at some normal highspeed. I take it to work to rip it there, and it does it at somewhere around 1x and gives me something that's ticked and popped and totally unlistenable. Not a proper bug report, admittedly, just sharing a quirk that occurred to me.

Nero rips CD tracks to MP3? What version? Nero Burning ROM, or another Nero program?

I am also having the silent failure issue concerning encoding. I loaded v4.51 onto WinXP. dropped a CD into the tray, Quinn reads the info just fine into the track info window. I select Convert All to Ogg, the first track indicates 0% progress, and... nothing more. In the output folder there is placed a 1-5k file with the correct Artist, Album, Song and Track#. It even has the correct extension. When I try to play this file any and all players indicate that "This File Is Damaged."
I attempted to encode into .ogg, .mp3, .wav and had the same disappointing results each and every time. I switched over to DBpoweramp and encoded into my little ogg's just fine.
What's up with this? Does this product not run on XP? (envision emoticon here)

And yes, I did install the Ogg Vorbis plug in before I tried all this.
