Making a special button

I'm trying to make a skin that is not boxy. This gives me a problem with making some of the buttons. I'll try to explain this.
I have a button that is on the border, and the buttonset picture has to be a full square, which includes outside of the skin. I know that that part is supposed to be white. But, I also have an extension that, when open, is on the border of the button. So, now I'm not sure how I can make a button work for when the extension is closed and when it is opened. I don't think it can be white, or when the extension is open, it will put white over it.

I hope you could understand that.

And for some reason, I accidentally put this at first in the plug-in section.

this isnt true if the mapped area for the button isnt square.

I'm just predicting, and since I don't have any experience, I'm going to wait until I actually put everything together. I'll tell you if I have a problem.
