k the new winamp 5 (rc 8 arrrggh) has got some counters like number of times played, date last played etc in the library, it might be time to include something like that in QCD... its been requested before, and can be rather useful when you have a large number of songs.

I think (and I believe most others also) that such a feature should be in a media library and not in standard QCD...

Hopefully the guys at audioscrobbler get their act together soon, which would collect this kind of info for me.

Would it be wrong of me to want the 'number of times played' (for example) to be player-agnostic? After all, if I listen to it twice in QCD and once in foobar2000, then I've listened to it three times.

This kind of leaves the scope of QCD. However, I guess one implementation would be to create a new tag for this, and then audio players could increment it. Another would be to make use of alternate data streams, but then that would only work on NTFS, and they'd inevitably get erased somehow (either by being moved to a non-NTFS partition or having some ADS-unaware program rewriting the file, eg for a tag update).

I only mention this since it seems wrong that if I decide to switch audio players at some point (or reinstall whichever audio player I'm currently using) then I lose all those stats, which really are song (ie, file) statistics.

Stats like this would be all good - but probably in a media library add-on would be best...

Foobar has a plugin that leaves a tag in the mp3 file itself. If we could get QCD's playlist to display custom tags like foobars can, we could stick it in ourselves.

My media library count the number of time a song is played but there is currently no way to show it (I really have to do a column selector :ponder:), and in fact it's pretty useless like the winamp counter.

You should look at QCDLogger. It's probably better for that matter. And it could be compatible with other players, as long as they have a plugin that can write the same type of log.

Wouldn't this be what AudioScrobbler (http://www.audioscrobbler.com) does? And it has the added bonus of a free web page where you can show others what you listen to, and an online radio based on your profile (last.fm (http://www.last.fm))

Aye, it does. That's not bad.
I'm trying it out at the moment. It appears that you can't get it to log to a file at the same time as submitting it to the webpage, and I rather like the idea of having something a little independent of some third party (such as when they decide this is a really good thing they're onto, and they want people to pay for such a service, or if they go under, etc).

Further, I would like to point out this webpage on id3 v2 tags which I came across:
id3 info (http://www.id3.org/frames.html)
Note that there is a frame defined for Play Counter ( along with many other interesting frames ).

Meh it ain't so bad, the plugins shipped with it are rock stable, in terms of functionality it is a bit lacking in comparison to qcd and especially foobar though...
