Shareaza (http://www.shareaza.com/) is becoming very popular. I haven't tried it yet. I am still using the ed2k network. There are so many file sharing options now it is hard to know if there is anything out there that is actually better than the ed2k network. Apart from being better, it also needs to be a clean option with no spyware / adware.
SpywareInfo has a very good information page related to file sharing programs and listing their Clean / Infected status. You can read it here (http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/).

Um, Protocol? Is there some reason why you're digging up a thread that's 2.5 years old?

Well, I was going to post about Shareaza and File Sharing programs and found an existing thread. Can't waste a perfectly good existing thread now, can we? I also thought that the SpywareInfo page was interesting and worth posting. Is that reason good enough or do I need to think of a better one? :paranoid:

Well, I am sure others will find the post informative. If it annoys you, then ignore it. It isn't that difficult.
Not sure why a threads age has anything to do with a decision to post to it. :puzzled:

PS: There are Forums that I visit who will warn and ban you if you create a new thread when one with the same subject exists. Search before posting is their motto. Some active threads date back 4 years and older.

PS: There are Forums that I visit who will warn and ban you if you create a new thread when one with the same subject exists. Search before posting is their motto. Some active threads date back 4 years and older. And there are forums that I visit that frown on people reviving threads that haven't been posted to in a long time. (Necroposting) Usually it's reccomended that you just start a new thread, referencing and/or linking the old thread in your new one if needed. Some even have the forum setup to automaticly lock threads after a certain amount of time with no replies.

So if the thread hasn't been locked, then it is open to post to. I never read any rule that prevented someone from posting to a thread after a certain amount of time. What is the EXACT reasoning for this to upset you? Please be specific so we can all see what it is. How old is too old before the thread is stale and mouldy? I don't see why someone should refrain from posting to a thread simply because someone in their infinite wisdom has decided to create a name for someone who posts to old threads.

I just received a PM from someone telling me how good Shareaza really is. I have since learnt that it uses up to four separate peer-to-peer (P2P) networks including EDonkey2000, Gnutella, BitTorrent and Shareaza's native network, Gnutella2 (G2).
And it is supposed to be Spyware free. Sounds like a winner to me. http://www.quinnware.com/forum/images/emots/post/thumbup.gif

I installed shareaza once but it seemed to fiddle with a lot of things and install stuff that I didn't want, so I got rid of it. I use bitcomet for file sharing, which obviously works on the bittorrent network.

I tried shareaza some time ago. Maybe it connected to those networks, maybe it didn't. It certainly didn't seem to live up to it's promise. I'll have to check it out again some day.
For the record, I was impressed at the resurrection, Protocol. I spent some time double and triple checking those dates :cheeky:

Hehe - you know what I meant to say ;)
So why every wmv file I download with Shareaza doesn't work ?

My Recommendations

+ Ares ( http://aresgalaxy.sourceforge.net )
Don't believe anyone who says Ares has Spyware/Adware, it don't!!! This program is better than Shareaza, I've only used it for a few months but I can tell you it's easily the BEST P2P available atleast in terms of non-torrent clients.

+ Shareaza ( http://www.shareaza.com )
This program does allow for Torrent downloading, but I never use it for that, I don't like it as a Torrent client, I prefer the 2 below for Torrent needs. In fact since Re-installing everything on my new computer I haven't needed this program since Ares has pretty much taken over and relieved Shareaza of her duties.

+ µTorrent ( http://www.utorrent.com )
This one is probably the smallest and lightest on system resources. It works very well and has some skins and customization options.

+ BitComet ( http://www.bitcomet.com )
This one has a really useful feature that I like anways where it has all the best Bittorent sites listed like bookmarks, it's very easy to navigate and find what you need.

Finally,.... Stay away from a progam called Azureus unless you like Java resource hogs. :evolved: A lot of people like this program, I say whatever floats your boat, I won't install it again though.

Soulseek and µTorrent here. I listen to pretty rare stuff so I can't find anything on major networks. Soulseek is a good network for rare stuff, and for stuff I can't find there, I look to torrents and "other sources."

Soulseek is a bit silly though, and here's why...

You have one of the products from this list installed. SoulSeek 155 or higher is NOT compatible with these products.

You need to uninstall them: <--- this makes me laugh.

Steganos(tm) Internet Anonym Pro
Steganos(tm) Secure P2P
XFire Instant-Messaging
WindowsBlind 3.x (disable theme for Soulseek)

You have one of these products from this list installed. SoulSeek 155 or later MAY not work with these products. You may need to uninstall them:

Nod32 Internet Monitor
ZoneAlarm on Windows 2000 SP3 or SP4
NetLimiter
WebWasher
Iontas PCEye2000 Parental Control
WyvernWorks Firewall

don't waste your time on 'raza. it's a typical jack of all trades that does nothing really well. you want decent ed2k? emule. you want variety? kad network, also emule. you want a has-been network with nothing of note and a truly miserable waste of bandwidth in the form of a protocl? gnutella anything.

Definetly spyware-free is Frostwire (http://www.frostwire.com/), the open-source clon of Limewire that follows the original Limewire roadmap.

I still think that eDonkey is better than any eMule flavour that I have used. Just a pity that they had to go and contaminate eDonkey with malware. So I thought that maybe Shareaza might be a likely clean replacement.

I found emule plus a little lacking (18 months ago??), but emule itself has worked stupendously.

A new member has chosen the name 'aculsha' (imitation is the...)...which is too close to 'acushla' for me to be comfortable. I sent a nice PM and respectfully asked if he would change it. I also informed Paul about it...as it may be that he will not be able to change it without Paul's help.

We'll see what happens.

Maybe it is someone here messing around. I guess I'll give up the act now and tell you all that I am actually Roj also. Actually, most of the top posters are me. Well, that isn't true but...:silly: Google tells me that "Aculsha" was the name of a fake company used by Kebbledom, a dirty company who didn't even do the job well enough to become a household name. I never knew what "acushla" meant; I always thought it had something to do with your real name. Did you decide on your own that you were the "beat of my heart" or a "darling". A lot of mirrors in your house? :)

And uh, Limewire is clean, but a ton of results are 100 kb virus-infected files. That clutters the search results nicely. I found the avast! siren sound file and just play that for my enjoyment instead of purposely downloading viruses.

I named my photographic business based on that definition. Get it? Pulse of my life. Personally I thought it was clever.

LimeWire is clean but I totally agree with you about the virus laden files...but ONLY when you download 'programs'. Let's face it...that's why you do a scan of the file BEFORE opening it. I've downloaded a ton of stuff and have never experienced a virus or anything else. It seems as if LimeWire itself scans any downloaded completed files and if it finds a problem, tells you about it. Just not in the Program section. Having said that, I've eventually been able to get every program I've ever wanted. And another plus was I got to see the 'You have the Devil in your computer but don't worry...NOD-32 has taken care of it for you' lots. I almost miss it now.
