You know, it wouldn't be so bad if it were some small, two-bit nation but the US has the resources at hand to REALLY damage the environment.

More ignorance from the ignorant...

I agree man. Scientists dont really get much freedom under the Bush regime. Bush doesnt care about the environment either. As long as he can survive until he grows old. Long term planning has never been on the agenda of Bush, nor negotiations or until things get tricky he backs out.

Bush has really no interest in the future. Just see his environmental policies or the deficits he's racking up. I don't know if this is because he only operates out of his cronies self interest or if he believes that Jesus is coming soon.

Great - more Republican nonsense

I'm resurrecting the dead thread because it mentions a topic near and dear to my heart. Republican nonsense. The conservatives have been spewing nonsense and ignorance since they early eighties, when they were just putting together their program. That program has consistantly been concerned with disinformation, outright lies, slander, and plain old dirty politics. Dubya has just been the icing on the cake. Here is a man who has committed enough offenses while in office to be impeached several times over, but what has happened to him? Nothing! And he gets re-elected! The Republican spin-meisters,and connected groups, have managed to hijack the country with their lies and half-truths to follow their agenda.

What has Dubya done you might ask?

01) One of his first requests to his staff was could he attack Iraq? He couldn't, then.
02) Trying to push legislation under the radar, prior to 9-11, that Americans wouldn't like, by disguising it in, or as, something else.
03) Showing a general incompetence in office prior to 9-11 (and after if you ask me).
04) Using 9-11 as a tool for his own gain.
05) Pushing through the Patriot Act. If you think it's good, read it and think. You won't like it for long. The FBI has already used it to
abuse the powers it gives them.
06) Enacting a tax cut that helped the upper 3% a lot more than it did the rest of us.
07) Creating a crippling budget deficit we'll all pay for some day.
08) Irresponsibly going for tax cuts that helped create such a deficit, and this during a war!
09) Using 9-11, al-Qeada, and WOMD as a justification for attacking Iraq when they had nothing to do with any of it. They also had no WOMD. All this resulting in the deaths of more than 1500 Americans and our allies, not to mentions thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians. Then ignoring his own military experts who told him that the war was a bad idea and we weren't going about it properly.
10) Lying to the American people about WOMD and what the intelligence was telling us about them. I saying lying because information has since come out showing that they knew better.
11) Telling us that our intelligence failed us about 9-11 when his staff had received breifings that the terrorists had plans of using aircraft as guided missiles BEFORE 9-11. Also consistantly IGNORING intelligence reports that they were going to do something soon
12) Pushing through lesgislation that helps his corporate friends more than it does us. Such as:
a) Changing overtime laws to make an illegal practice by employers legal and thereby costing thousands of workers money that they
desperately need.
b) Making it harder to go into bankruptcy, even though credit card companies encourage behavior that leads to it.
c) Gutting the Clean Air and Water Act because his industry friends found it too restrictive.
d) And so on . . .
13) Discouraging the advancement of alternative fuels or even improving fuel efficiency standards. This even though we have the technology available right now to nearly double, or even triple what they are now!
14) Further loosening standards on coal emmisions and encouraging research on burning fossil fuels to exclusion of more productive avenues.
15) Initiating his "Healthy Forest" program wherein the industry is allowed to cut old growth forests and thin them to lessen the chance of forest fires. Even though the brush that is left is untouched AND is the cause of MOST of the fires.
16) His "Clear Skies" initiative whose primary purpose seems to be to clear the skies of anything living. Dubya's enviromental record is the worst of any president we've had. He is a menace to the enviroment and public health. He's even trying to relax the standards on mercury emissions into our air and water, as they are "too restrictive" right now.
17) Ignoring the only decent man in his cabinet, Colin Powell. Powell and the State Department had created a detailed plan on how to go into Iraq, do the job with the minimum of trouble, and get out again. They spent months putting it together. Bush completely ignored it in favor of Rumsfield and Condoweezla Rice's ideas and advice. He has constantly snubbed and marginalized him since he doesn't mindlessly agree with everything Dubya wants to do. He's not what they consider a "team player".
18) Hiring Cheney's old company to go in and provide "services" at inflated prices and rigging the bidding process for jobs in favor of their buddies.
19) Creating an energy policy in secret by asking the energy industry itself what it should be. That's like asking the fox how we should defend the henhouse.
20) Allowing corporate greed and corruption to continue without checks or consequences. Example: They send Martha Stewart to jail over less than $100,000 and harmed noone. But the executives at Enron, who stole billions and destroyed the pensions of thousands of people not to mention putting them out of work, have not even been sent to court.

I could go on, but the list is really too extensive. All these items are FACTS and can be checked. I certainly didn't make it up, I wish I had, but unfortunately it's all too true.

Sigh. You're going to have to help me here. I want to investigate some of these. Let's say the first. Where do I start?

Just a guess, but google news has some archive don't they?
But it is not only the republicans that have caused problems... the democrats aren't free of similar types of things either. :) (though I do not have example, nor do I care to look for them (from either sides))

Well Willow, I take my news from so many different sources, it would be a job to track them down for you. However, as said by Madjo above, Google could be a good start. You might even try the Commentary page on my website. There are links at the bottom of that page that may be of help to you. Some are news links and some are editorial. However they are but a small sample of where I get news. I'll add more later as time permits. You will find that page here:

Great - more Republican nonsense

Why do I have this nagging feeling that if the Democrats were in power I'd be reading: Great - more Democratican nonsense?

You already hear that everyday from the Republicans here. The Democrats aren't perfect, but at least they aren't trying to take the country back 40 yrs. I wouldn't even have a problem with the Republicans, if they would let the progressives in the party have a say now & again. Instead they let corruption rule them by dealing hand in glove with major corporations. They give them what they want, but screw us in the bargain.

No difference, just business as usual. I expect nothing more, but a nice surprise would be good now and then.
