View Full Version : Where do you get your news?
Hey all, I'm interested to find out what news sites you read to be 'informed'.. or news sites you read for certain views of things.
Mine are as follows:
Guardian Unlimited
New York Times
CNN
BBC
Globe and Mail
Toronto Star
From time to time I'll read Guerrilla News for a good dose of the far left. The forums on this site offer some interesting reads.
Interested to know if there are some good sources I am missing... please inform!

Google News isn't bad. there's also http://www.einnews.com/. These are both news aggregators; they present news from multiple sources.
While not strictly news, I like Memri http://www.memri.org/subjects.html for its coverage of the middle east. I often go to Amnesty Int'l http://www.amnesty.org/. The ACLU is increasingly important today http://www.aclu.org/.
It occurs to me that one of the nice effects of the internet is that you can go hear things right from the horse's mouth; you no longer need a news source to edit things for you. I do like to go to the web sites of people-organizations in the news. But with so many sources of news now available a good editor is more necessary than ever. Matt's list is good at that.
I also remember that when I went to school I'd have to wait a month or so to get the most recent copy of Pravda. Now, http://english.pravda.ru/ is right there. But you know it's just not the same anymore. I like the London Times http://www.timesonline.co.uk/. And the International Herald Tribune http://www.iht.com/. The Christian Science Monitor is excellent http://www.csmonitor.com/. Don't let the religous connection fool you. It is an outstanding news source whose editorial policy is in no way governed by the church.
I won't even go into blogs.

Sky News (on TV)
BBC Radio 4 (when i can't sleep)
Channel 4 News (very good)

i have to say that i really don't like CNN news, it really is rubbish! its idea of a "special report" usually means repeating everything 8 or 9 times!

Infowars. Alex Jones is scary and often annoying. I can only take so much because if he's right the world really sucks. His radio show actually gave me nightmares once. He does make you think though.

I agree with you about Alex Jones, that's why he's at the bottom of the list. However, a lot of what he says is true. My problem with him is that, quite often, his views are used as some kind of justification for the right to carry weapons. i.e. if the Government are really this scary then all Americans should carry guns, if only to defend themselves against possible Government clampdowns. This is bollocks.

Although I do not read the following sources on a daily basis, I will turn to them on any particular story that I feel I want to know more about.
Since the focus of my interest is the Middle East, I like to read editorials from newspapers of that region in order to gain a wider perspective.
The major papers would include:
Al Jazerra http://www.aljazeera.com/
Arabic News http://www.arabicnews.com/
Israeli News Now.Com http://www.israelinewsnow.com/
Jordan News http://www.topix.net/world/jordan
Muslim News http://www.muslimnews.co.uk/
IranMania http://www.iranmania.com/News/SectionView/Default.asp?SectionKind=Current+Affairs
Washington Post http://www.washingtonpost.com/
Guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency http://www.irna.com/
I have included the Guardian and The Washington Post as I feel they are two of the finest 'western' newspapers.

I confess...it is the paper I go to the least on this list...The Washington Post seems to take care of the 'western' needs. I choose a British Paper more because it is British than for any other reason.
As I recall, it is difficult to read the Harold Tribune on-line as they want a subscription from you before you have access to the editorials etc.

I'm essentially down to Betanews and Whirlpool (australian broadband - infrequent updates).
And betanews specifically for downloads, but I can't stop reading the news.
I've given up TV news (I don't have a TV), newspapers (other than the AU Age's Greenguide / computer ads+entertainment), radio (I don't have a radio), news sites and tech news.
That said, you hear stuff here, you here stuff from people, you hear some radio at times in the gym, and people point you to specific sites/articles.
Am I turning into an ignoramus, or am I filtering out crap that just becomes information overload? Kinda feels like freedom sometimes.
Hmmm. I used to live on Slashdot. When I was on holidays, I became disturbed when I realised that by the time things got posted on slashdot I'd already read the source articles.

The mighty Whirlpool Broadband Forums (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/). The best ADSL reference on the net. I am there now actually. Overclockers Australia Forums (http://forums.overclockers.com.au/) are also a good reference.

Freedom probably wins.
It often seems to me that ultimately there is precious little difference between being 'up to date' on a news story and not knowing anything about it at all. The one glaring difference is a certain 'self satisfaction' in knowing you know the news.
If you are unable to actually contribute something worthwhile to the story...knowing that story is no different than sitting watching a play as a member of an audience.
With everything (not) happening in response to the idiot in Iran and the obvious corruption and denial of such in Washington today and the biggest 'scandal' in Canadian History where something in the neighbourhood of $337,000,000.00 (that's a big sum no matter how you convert it) of which, now that they've been caught, $550,000.00 will be given back...what's the point in knowing? In reference to the Canadian story, I actually heard an interview with voters in the street where one said he would vote for the Liberals in the next election because now that they've been caught it is unlikely they will try it again...whereas the Opposition Parties might be tempted to seeing how much the previous government was able to get. If I was in any doubt before hearing this...now I'm in despair.
It always (for me) comes back to the same saying: Don't vote, it only encourages them.
Give me news...or give me freedom?
Give me FREEDOM.

I agree. However, you MUST vote.
It would be nice to have a box marked "none of the above".

When this topic was first posted I didn't answer as I didn't have a definitive news site, rarely even checked the news but felt I was missing something. Since then I've fired up an RSS Reader and suck in all my news that way. Using feeds from:
News Feeds
BBC News
Guardian Unlimited
New York Times
Reuters
Yahoo News
(and the last 2 are local newspapers for my region)
The Journal
Evening Chronicle
Tech
Engadget
Slashdot
The Register
Sport
Guardian Unlimited Sport
Sky Sports.com
I now don't feel I miss anything (or very little anyway)

i only use one news-site, which is a german one : www.spiegel.de
not interested in other sports, i use www.f1total.com as my german formula 1 infopage
for linux/kde news i visit www.kde-look.org (english)
celebrity news : www.kino.de
if something happens around the world, i watch german tv-channels. but if something goes on in germany, it's good to watch CNN, because they report unattached (or do you say independent ??)

My sister works in the National News room of the CBC, Canada's National Broadcasting System.
She tells me that whenever there is a breaking story...they all turn to CNN. Including the day that a French plane skidded off the runway in Toronto recently. Every news network in Canada covering a Canadian story..CBC tuned in to CNN.
True story.
