This media player is simply amazing. Everything is just perfect exept for the sound. Why does it sound so bad and is there something you can do about it?

yes
try using a different playback plugin (shipped with player)
or if you like you can use a dsp plugin
qcd will make use of winamps dsp plugins
if you get the winamp plugins manager from 'our' plugins page.
also i feel you may be comparing it to another player that has dsps already enabled...
qcd (as far as i know) has no dsp plugins enabled when you install it.
you could also play with the EQ

If the sound is bad, you might wanna check your soundcard drivers. Also it would be useful to know what you exactly mean with 'bad'. E.g. Does the sound skip a lot? You might want to check your speakers too. Like Todd said you can try directsound if waveout is giving you problems. Usually it's the other way around though.

the equalizer and the presets are working fine for me... Its bad that they don't work with MAD thats why i use the XAudio...
Most common cause I've seen for 'bad sound' is somebody turning all their EQ & volume sliders all the way up & clipping it all to hell....
EDIT: Oh yeah, and DON'T use any DSP plugins. :P

No no... not at all something to do with DSP, EQ or soundcardsettings. I'm a semiproffessional studioguy and know this stuff. I never use soundaltering plugins like DSP-thingies or EQ because it allmost allways makes the sound worse.
Winamp is right now the mediaplayer that sounds best to my ears. Then Windows Media Player, after that iäve got to say JetAudio and far behind comes QP. The sound is flat, dull and simply boring, not alive.
So I wonder... Why does the different players sound so different?

Realized that I used the simple direct sound thing. now it sounds better, but not yet as good as Winamp... Winamp has a more smooth and soft sound
I suppose if you really like the sound of Fraunhofer's MP3 decoder (which is what both WinAMP and Windows Media Player use), you could always grab the WinAMP input plugins manager and use WA's MP3 decoder with QCD. Or you could try one of QCD's other native MP3 plugins, see if any of them suit you.

Well i might... but the strange thing is that if i play a cd I get the same sound so i think it depends on the output thingie. Tried to copy the Winamp-output but no result. Just found the XMPlayer that really sounds amazing, even better then winamp. To bad it stinks in every other way ;)
