Windows XP Service Pack 2 was release to the web on the 10th of August and is available on a full network install (266MB) from here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en)
However XP Home Edition users should be receiving via automatic updates today or tommorow, XP Pro users should be recieiving it later this month (apparinatly). This download will be between 30 and 120MB depending on whether you already have SP2 RC2+ installed or whether or not you have SP1 installed.
But for 56k'ers anything over 10MB is gonna take forever so you can now order the English and German language versions on CD from here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx) and should recieve it within 28days.

I'd like to recommend that every one get a full copy of SP2, in addition to using automatic update, if possible. That way if you need to reinstall Windows, you'll be up-to-date with your security updates and won't have to go online to get them.

I downloaded the full SP2 since I'm impatient and I didn't want to install a bunch of programs until after it was on. I've had no issues with it except that it keeps alerting me that I have no firewall when I boot up despite that I keep telling it not to. It doesn't save that option for some reason.

Heh I've already uninstalled it...
Don't know if it was a bad router setting somewhere, but ever since i installed it my internet turned into a peice of crap that would keep dropping out and just generally being slow. Anyway, I uninstalled it, and what do ya know, everythings fine again.
Anyway, seeming i don't use the firewall (good ol router :P), I know i have an antivirus running, never use IE unless when forced too for windows update, theres really nothing i want/ need from the pack.
And I'm pretty sure Ms will have to keep the critical updates coming for ppl not on sp2, seeming as most ppl on slower connection aren't gonna be bothered downloading all that.

Install SP2 last night and works fine here so far.
Only bad thing is that the cracked uxtheme.dll doesn't work any more! :grimreape :puzzled:
Edit: Found a cracked version for SP2 here:

I installed it and it fucked up my computer! :grimreape  Installation, no problem, reboot, i wait, see windows boot screen, i wait, animation stopped, i wait, nothing happens, i wait a bit longer, nothing...I Try save mode, I try system restore, i try repair console, i try repair installation using windows xp installation cdrom, still nothing. FUCK! i've never been screwed so badly! Only one option left, a complete re-installation of windows xp and now there just doesn't seem to be an end to the updating and reinstalling of applications. THis sucks sooo much, im not going to be bothered again with sp2! :skull:

Just do a repair install first and you can probably salvage things.
Also, for those dual booting with linux. I've heard it won't install if you use a non-Windows boot loader.

If your still on the fence about SP2, you can try MS's "Application Compatibility Testing and Mitigation Guide for Windows XP Service Pack 2"
It's about a 3MB dl, available at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=9300BECF-2DEE-4772-ADD9-AD0EAF89C4A7&displaylang=en

That last part is odd cus i did get it installed, only when i rebooted my computer windows froze. (I had linux, but the windows installation killed the linux boot menu. Now i repartitioned the linux drive and made it a bit smaller so windows has more hdd space: +-30GB more) Anyway, things are sorta back to normal. I thankfully still have all my files and i just started installing stuff like crazy. Its amazing that in such a short period of time i can completely fill my start menu with all sorts of programmes again that i regularly use. :cross-eye I figure SP2 is mainly security, and since im not some company and do not make myself visible to the world of internet so that hackers like to come pay a visit (there is nothing to find on my pc anyways), I let it pass. Thanks anyway for offering help :)

SP2 works great on my system. Now it takes a little more to boot but that is not the end of the world. Overall is pretty good, so hopefully I won't be getting too many calls
If you want to merge or "slipstream" WinXP with SP2 for your next clean reinstall (you never know when it is going to happen) here (http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp) is how to do it.

No probs here too.Installed it, turned off inbuilt firewall.
But i wish there were more companies in OS business, cos with more competition it would've brought out the best.
