Now i haven't been following the processor market since the end of last year now, and a lot has changed. I'm trying to get back on top of it now but i need a bit of help, so correct me if i'm wrong please.
The AMD Athlon 64 Skt 754 - Now these are the original 64bit processors AMD came out with right? and my guessing is that AMD will do an intel as they have now got the Skt 939, so in about a year they'll stop making the 754 and they'll become dirt cheap? Right?
AMD Athlon 64 FX used to be on Skt 940 but now is Skt 939, so i'm guessing that the same will happen with these as the original Athlon 64's. Also am i right in saying these processors are the dogs bollocks! (i want one! just £600 is slightly outta my price range!)
AMD Sempron now is this the replacement for the Duron. Also by the looks of things is practically a AMD Athlon XP, but on the Skt 754.
Anyway i think i'm right about the above, please tell me if i'm wrong! lol. :normal:

From the buttom up... The Sempron is as you say AMDs new name for their cheap processors. The weird thing is that the 2800+ model is a Athlon XP repacked to socket 754. (Not the barton core, since thats too expensive with the large cache) But the Sempron 3100+ is actually a Athlon 64! So for all looking for a Sempron, be carefull and do your homework!!!
The AMD Athlon 64 Skt 754 - Now these are the original 64bit processors AMD came out with right?Well the first batch of A64 CPU's was Opterons on Socket 940. Then came FX51 and 3200+ at the same time, with the FX51 being a dualchannel socket 940 CPU and the 3200+ is a singlechannel socket 754.
The plan is to merge the socket 754 and socket 939 in the future, but it is anyones guess as to when that happens. Personally I think they'll keep the socket 754 for a while, since the sempron is running on that. All others will probably be moved to 939 within long. All dualchannel A64 will be on the 939 in the future.
About the price, it is a bit difficult to say...

Damn, i never figured AMD could be so confusing with it's different processors. Maybe this is why i just stick faithfully to Intel. I've had the pentium processor @ 66MHz, the pentium processor @ 166MHz, and @ 166MHz with MMX, Pentium II @ 450 MHz, Pentium III @ 500 MHz, and @ 550MHz, and now pentium IV @ 2.8GHz HT. I've also had a celeron @ 400 MHz. Talking about where my loyalty lies, there ya go ;)
ps ive also had a 386/33 MHz, but i cant remember if it was intel, probably it was.

Well you'll be happy to know that Intel is going for a naming scheme ala AMD's opteron line which 1xx, 2xx, 8xx depending on featureset. It'll be hell to remember the actual clockspeeds, cachesize etc. ! :(

Anyone can post a couple of links with information on the 64 bit processors? Please don't say about put this or that on Google...

Well amd.com is a good link! ;) For CPU info aceshardware.com is always a good source for info!

Is that really so? I really hope not, cause that would stink :gasmask: :( Do you know, Tokelil, where this is confirmed? I mean not that there is such a great choice anyway. There is Northwood and Prescott. Apart from the clockspeed, this already says enough. (i.e. Northwood has FSB = 550 MHz, Prescott has FSB = 800 MHz. Northwood has single threading whereas Prescott has hyperthreading. Prescott is for clockspeeds of 3 GHz and above. Northwood has L2 cache max @ 512KB and Prescott has L2 cache @ 1MB).

Hmmm thats kinda weird that the 3100+ is an Athlon 64. Surely it must be cut down in some way? Meh. All good to me!
Well the first batch of A64 CPU's was Opterons on Socket 940. Then came FX51 and 3200+ at the same time, with the FX51 being a dualchannel socket 940 CPU and the 3200+ is a singlechannel socket 754.
Aren't the FX's also on 939 now also? To be honest looking at the specs there isn't much between the normal 64's and the FX's other then 1024Kb of L2 cache (tho that does make a big difference). What do you mean by dual channel? :cross-eye
The plan is to merge the socket 754 and socket 939 in the future, but it is anyones guess as to when that happens. So give it about 6months for all the 64's to be on Skt 939 then the 754's (hopefully) will become cheaper, as they'll be obsolite (going by what intel did with the P4).
Cheers.

Aren't the FX's also on 939 now also? Yer they are moving to 939.
Hmmm thats kinda weird that the 3100+ is an Athlon 64. Surely it must be cut down in some way?Not as far as I remember!
By dual channel I mean that the FX line is able to run in dualchannel RAM mode when 2 RAM blocks are installed, which double the bandwidth. That and the bigger cache is the only difference between the socket 754 A64 and the FX line.
