This is just a lame thread/poll concerning what anyone has their middle mouse button (= scroll wheel) assigned to. I use it to close programmes that are in focus :) :bulb:

I use it to scroll and it's like a disease because now when I have to go a long distance I use the scroll wheel when I should really just drag the scroll bar.

I also use it to open a tab/close a tab in Firefox.

First of all I've got four buttons in my mouse (including scroll wheel). Wheel is set for AutoScroll (though I hardly ever use this) and the fourth button for middleclick (and is used only by Opera to open links in new page).

How can you change the middle mouse clicks action?

Control Panel -> Mouse

Control Panel -> Mouse
I take it this only works with certain brands of mouse? Because I can't see anything like that in control panel > mouse.
I have a cheapo A4 Tech mouse, so thats probably the reason for the option not being there.

Oh i hadn't realised this. I have logitech standard scroll mouse with logitech drivers installed. In control panel -> mouse i can assign different actions to all mouse buttons. I really thought any mouse drivers support this (except maybe the default windows drivers). :ponder:

besides scrolling, middle-clicking a link in firefox or opera opens a new tab. Very useful.

mine's for getting accidentially bumped
and autoscrolling
(when i click on it a double sided arrow thing pops up and i don't have to use the wheel to scroll
just move the mouse)
i have an "intellipoint" optical mouse made by the same people that brought us windows.
i too can assign whatever button to do whatever i want,make toast,roll a smoke,boil the jug etc... :cross-eye

Normally set to AutoScroll, but as others do it's also Open/Close Tab within FireFox.

Mine's an Intellimouse Explorer...lovely and optical with 5 buttons, my favourite mouse.

Nice, after some digging around on the net found some better drivers for my mouse. But still, I like opening new tabs and closing them in firefox with middle clicking, and when i change the function of the middle mouse click this doesn't work anymore, so I'll just leave it.

I have assigned "Minimize all windows function" to my middle button (very useful) , and in opera just using gestures :)

Click opens new tabbed window in firefox. Wheel scrolls up/down in explorer(-like programs), zooms in/out (ngwave-editor), puts volume up/down (qcd)

Scroll down and scroll up !

I want one of those new mice that in the scroll can rotate up and down and also tilt to scroll left and right without a separate button.

Just like this one here (http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/productdetails.aspx?pid=003).

Hey, that's sweet. I know there exist mouses that have 2 scrollwheels; one for vertical and horizontal, but a scroll wheel that tilts beats everything! :biggrin:

In addition, there are these mice with a huge ping pong ball build in it. Not a button, but a means to move the mouse on the screen with the thumb. I can't say that that doesnt cause RSI. Maybe it was designed to limit RSI to the least number of fingers, ie the thumb only. :silly:

btw does anyone know what the current maximum number of buttons on a mouse is? I think it's 5 but im not sure. Lol, how about a mouse with build in keyboard :cheeky:

I've seen mice (mouses) with the numeric keypad built in. I guess it's for gamers. I'm not sure if it's a true mouse or not some hybrid.

How many mice can you have attached to a pc? I've had two with apparntly no problem, a trackball for games and a normal one for everything else.
