Help us test
the next-generation
Windows Media Player

Windows Media Player 10 is being refined to provide a great experience for discovering, playing, and taking your digital media anywhere. We are still in the early stages, but this technical beta lays the groundwork for the great end-to-end digital media experience coming with the final release for Windows XP.

Check out what's new

* Sleek New Design. A streamlined and sleek new design delivers a fresh new look and improved ease of use, including faster access to top Player tasks. The most important Player features are now in a more prominent position in the library, enabling users to accomplish everyday digital media tasks all in one convenient place and to take advantage of the powerful capabilities of the Player while browsing the library.
* Choice of Online Stores. Introducing the first "Digital Media Mall" enabling you to discover, download, rent or stream music and video within the Player from a choice of online stores. These stores enjoy deeper integration and customization within the Player to enhance their functionality and ease of use.
* Enhanced Device Support. A wide selection of devices are supported with this release, including a host of current portable music players and new Portable Media Center devices that will be available later this year. A major component of this rich device support includes a new feature called Auto Sync which enables the seamless, automatic synchronization of music, video, and even recorded TV and photos to supported portable devices.
* Improved All-in-One Smart Jukebox. Windows Media Player 10 Technical Beta builds upon the award-winning Windows Media Player 9 Series, delivering fast and flexible playback, unmatched audio and video quality, and smart jukebox features designed to save you time and effort.

Don't think I'll bother though, thanks very much.

"Sleek new design"??? Again? ha ha ha. Maybe the playback buttons are squares now :silly:

btw, does this version no longer exist in new windows xp OS software? I heard about a case where windows was not allowed to have its media player integrated into the operating system anymore.

First of all, let me tell you about a music freak who listens to his music collection all day and all night on a player application called QCD B81.

That's me.

I'm no fan of WMP - it eats up 33% of my CPU even when playing a 256kbps MP3 stored on my HDD with no vis.

However, I will use three letters to say something.

SRS.

Even if you hate the damn player, it's integrated SRS effect, once fully adjusted with the eq., can be quite a treat to the ears, especially if you have a good sound system hooked up to your PC.
Also, the Media Library isn't that bad. It's at least better than Winamp's one.

You can hate it as much as you like. But at least be fair.

Just answer a simple question. Which Media player do you use to see VCD's?

I hate colored sound. Period.

I don't do Media Libraries either.

Oh God - there's no contest: the Open Source player Media Player Classic rules all, bar none. It plays DVDs too because it has a MPEG2 decoder built in. AND it does 5.1 surround sound, either via analog or SP/DIF. And it's 1Mb (yes, I did say 1Mb) in size and doesn't use the Registry.

Now, tell me why I need Windows Media Player again?

So that all other applications look better on your pc ;) It's a question of no good without bad, no light without dark, no peace without war, no qcd without WMP,... no wait that cant be right :puzzled:

"Unmatched" indeed....nothing can possibly match how bad it is! LOL

OK, I've already been accused of starting one "war" recently, so I will preface the following by saying that it's just my opinion:

SRS = Sounds REALLY Strange (or if you prefer, Sh*tty)

I'm with Roj on this, I really like my music uncolored by DSPs. Of course some recordings need a little help, particularly older ones, but in general, if your music sounds bad, you might blame a subpar sound card (like the one I have LOL), or second rate amps or speakers. Of course there's always "second rate ears", not many ways to fix that.

Again, just my opinion.

I'm currently using Shibatch's super EQ with 2 of the 18 sliders off of "0" by 1 dB, one up and one down, the other 16 bands are at 0. That's for my bad ears, and I'm hoping to wean myself from even that. My main "livingroom" component system has no tone controls or processors of any kind.

If I was forced to use Windows Media Player, I'd use MPlayer2.
START->Run->Mplayer2

Small fast and efficient, why change it?

Unless I'm mistaken (naawwww LOL), mplayer2 is the basis for Media Player Classic which is Open Source. I use MPC for videos, with the appropriate "alt" codecs, and let QCD do what it does best: audio.
