A double blind test of audio codecs was just completed. Vorbis won, ATRAC3 finished in last place. Open source rules!

I was discussing this with a friend earlier via IM. It will be far more valuable if and when this tuning extends up to the higher bitrates - 128bit is utterly useless as far as I'm concerned and few people I know encode at that bitrate today.

Still, it's another milestone passed and I must say I'm not surprized given that MPC is dead, AAC is a complete wash vis a vis DRM and MP3 hasn't improved in audio quality since 3.90 (the latest builds are faster but just awful to listen to - talk about tinniness). WMA and the Sony con job that is ATRAC weren't even on the radar.

In short, this was inevitable.

Theres always GT3b2 for encoding above q5 just theres slightly inflated bitrates (usually about 20Kb) lookie here...

Hi, thanks for posting that. Is there a plugin for QCD that uses the Aoyumi's aoTuV branch version quoted in the tests?

I encode using Ogg Vorbis at quality 5 (don't be too horrified, Roj!). It gives a reasonable quality (well, actually, to my ears it's fine) for my iRiver H140 - ideal for the car, train, etc, which are not exactly ideal acoustic environments anyway. So if the Aoyumi's aoTuV version is better, I'd like to use it.

Thanks very much, ian

You can download the command line encoder http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?showtopic=15049& from here, then use the CLI encoder in the plug-ins section http://www.quinnware.com/list_plugins.php?plugin=82 . Install it, configure it select ogg vorbis from the drop down menu, then point the thingy (can't remember what its called) up the top to the command line exe press the save button then close and encode using the CLI encoder.

For an excellent encoder with multi codec support try DBPoweramp (http://www.dbpoweramp.com).
