TweakXP.com shows us how very simple it can be to "turn off" different elements of Windows XP (Windows Messenger, Outlook Express, error reporting, etc.). What it fails to do, is describe the possible repercussions of having removed these links from the chain (or at least I didn't find that info). So I guess my question is... Which elements of windows are safe to "turn off", without screwin' up the works???

Well I consider most surgestions publised at tweakxp.com as oretty safe. Some of them aren't worth you time though IMO. (Have tried most performance tweaks over the last couple of years in XP) Disabling unused services, removing MSN (if not used), disabling last access file stamp when using ntfs etc. is a good idea though.

I used TweakXP and similar programmes a lot in the past for, you know, performance tweaks and all. Now, however, i couldn't be bothered really. I've got a P4 2.8GHz and really doesn't need any microscopic software tweaks to make it run better. Besides, i figured that once you get started you most likely cannot undo the changes you made. If you do skrew up (and im talking about modifying the registry) than it is reboot, format c:, and reinstall windows all over.

Let me be among the first to wish you a HAPPY BIRTHDAY :ditsy:
It wasn't mentioned at the bottom of the forum page. Did you fail to enter that info when registering, or are Paul & Matt neglecting their thousands of children??? ;)

On the subject at hand, I turn off all animation and fading as it makes the interface faster. I hate the slow slide of menu items even though I have an Athlon XP 2600+. I also turn off the Shortcut indicators and the "Shortcut to" text - pain in the ass.
Oh, and I dump Windows Messenger (because I use MSN Messenger) and MSN Explorer.
That's about it...

As for turning off windows services, take a look at:
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
Quite comprehensive, with all the info you need to determine whether it's safe to turn something off.
You can also look at http://www.greatis.com/regrun3appdatabase.htm
This also includes info on other, non-windows processes that may be running on you 'puter.
If nothing else you'll know what all those processes and services are. As for me, I like to at least know what all these things are doing. I go back to the days where if you wanted a computer to do something, you had to write the software youself. Less bloat was better then, and it still is.
