Have downloaded the Lame plugin from this site and I have some questions. It seems everytime I configure the encoder. and close the window (and save on the next window), the settings revert to whatever they were before I chnaged them. Quality preset chnages hold, and with this change, VBR method changed to VBR-new. However, if I change the VBR quality from VBR 2, to say VBR 5. it resets back to 2 when I open configure again. Also, I tried to limit the max bit rate to 256 and that doesn't hold either. What am I doing wrong?

Also, could anyone direct me to, or provide a "newbie" explanation of what the Lame settings mean? Quality preset? VBR method? VBR quality?

I would recommend starting here:
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?showtopic=203&

A bit technical, but good info. Basically, if you are looking for excellent quality encodes and are not too concerned about the size, use -alt-preset standard command line switch. This will give you files of about 190 kbps on average.

I recommend you to use CLI encoder (http://www.quinnware.com/list_plugins.php?plugin=82) with latest lame.exe.

I recommend you to use CLI encoder (http://www.quinnware.com/list_plugins.php?plugin=82) with latest lame.exe.
Installed the CLI Encoder, configured to lame.exe (from the lame plugin download from QCD) and when I attempted to rip some tracks from a CD, an error occured: Unable to start lame.exe

Where do I go next? What else might I need? Is the Lame.exe from the QCD plugins not up to date enough for this to work? Thanks for the help....

Shaohao means lame.exe the Command Line Encoder. Have a look at my link above, under 'Useful Links' there is a section called 'Latest LAME Compiles'. You can get the lame.exe encoder from those links. :)

Please excuse this neophyte as I struggle to get going. Have loaded the CLI Encoder, and the latest Lame (3.96) .exe as the links provided above. The encoder at "--alt-preset standard - %d" and "--alt preset fast standard - %d" works, but with a very annoying pop at the beginning of the encoded track during playback. Playing back with MAD plugin.....

1.) How do I get rid of the "pop"?

2.) With using just the QCD Lame encoder plugin, it sounded fine, but it didn't
seem to want to hold changes in setting to VBR Quality and bit rate
max setting of 256. Can this be corrected? (using a lower max should
make the file size smaller (correct?) hopefully without degrading the
quality in any noticeable way).

Thanks for the continued help. Very much appreciated....

Try this version of LAME its 3.90.3 its the recommended complile (the newer ones arn't quite as good apparinatly). http://www.rarewares.org/files/mp3/lame-3.90.3.zip
and you encoder settings should be something like --alt-preset standard - %d if you still get the pop then...

Mnay thanks for the quick reply. I think I may be barking up the wrong tree. I added files to the QCD playlist that were on my PC before QCD and that sounded great when first played thru the QCD player. Now they too begin with a very annoying "pop". Sounds like the old lp-turntable pop that occurs when the stylus makes contact with the lp.....

Maybe I'm my own worst enemy. Maybe we could start at the beginning. When I downloaded all my plugins, I saved them to a folder I created (plugins) and then opened them to install from there. It seems that the dll's show up in Programs/QCD/Plugins (not exact but you get the idea), but the exe stays in the folder I downloaded them to. What';s the best way to download the plugins, save to, and load to? Maybe I've created my own mess.

Thanks for hang with this neophyte.
