Well, it looks like pretty soon we will see an alpha version of windows longhorn out and about. If you are interested i suggest you read about it here (http://www.microsoft-watch.com/article2/0,1995,1581842,00.asp). In this article it says that the average pc will need to have the following specifications in order to run windows longhorn:

Microsoft is expected to recommend that the "average" Longhorn PC feature a dual-core CPU running at 4 to 6GHz; a minimum of 2 gigs of RAM; up to a terabyte of storage; a 1 Gbit, built-in, Ethernet-wired port and an 802.11g wireless link; and a graphics processor that runs three times faster than those on the market today.

Cash, no credit heh heh heh :grimreape

IMhO that sounds very unlikely!
Longhorn can graphically (if thats a word) be run in 3 tiers. Tier0 can be run on DirectX 7 hardware and my guess is that no computer with a DX7 card has any where near those specifications. Tier2 requeres a DirectX 9 card, but I really doubt that it'll have to be any faster than what we have today, because intergrated graphiccards wont get that fast within the next couple of years. (Which will be a large part of the market) Besides all graphics is done via the DirectX API which should make it faster.

A dual core x86 CPU isn't schedule to enter marked before some time next year, which makes it unlikely that it'll be common by 2006.

Anyway, thats just my oppinion and it might change when there is more info... ;) Anyway, it'll be interresting to follow.

I saw those specs being bandied about. It makes for good news, but it's just sensationalism IMO.
I second everything Tokelil said.
A blog by one of the MS dudes made fun of those specs. MS dev blogs make good reads.

Where are those blogs?

I had actually written "I should have the link, but I don't" - but I deleted it as superfluous text.
Short answer: dunno

Oh, and I think the guy was a fan of firefox. But he preferred RSS over all browsers...

Here is how Bill Gates thinks the new windows can run on those specs.

How Gates thinks hardware, not software will be free (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/03/30/1346246&tid=109)

there is already an alpha version out and about .

so longhorn will use 2-3 ghz of the dual core processor to run and half a terabyte for the os files and longhorn will cost $10,000 and it will be in a store near you in 2007. hahaha
