what do ISO 'files/images' usually open with by default ?
for some reason winRAR has taken over ,
they do work with winRAR but they just don't behave as they 'should'.
(i want to reassociate them back)

also how often can i reinstall windows (xp pro) ?
i did a reinstall a couple of months ago and considering my machine is freaking out in general i thought instead of attempting to fix all my cock ups i could just reinstall , is this too soon ?

Iso files aren't associated with any thing at default. If you want to open them try out IsoBuster which has a free version. If you want to mount them try Deamon Tools. If you want to burn them associate them with your burning program of choise! :)

About reinstalling I dont think you can say anything about how long there should go between installs. My XP installation on my old machine (just got a new one a few weeks ago) has lasted more than a year and still runs decent. So my advice is to reinstall if it runs bad and if not then dont!

i have them burnt onto disk (nero 6 ultra) that worked ok
and i can open them (with winRAR)
but what do you mean by "mount" them ?

Deamon Tools is program the emulates one or more CD-ROM/DVD drives so if you have an iso file you can mount it and will be available just as any other drive. So you can have images of CDs on your harddrive that you can use without burning them to a CD.

Mounting of iso or bin files can cause some problems when playing games though in my experience, like crashes etc.

Hey Todd, nice fan you got there btw! :cheerful:

ha ha ha it's not mine man it belongs to DILLINJA and apparently the fan caused some crazy shit to happen so it got 'binned'

i was going to post this in the joke thread but it seems apt to put it here considering the topic

Try winISO. I'm very happy with that programme. Easy to use and has a simple interface.
