Plug-In Development

Does anyone have any thoughts on where to go online for sort of a crash course on how to implement a plugin architecture for a piece of software? I know the basic ideas of plugins but I would really like to be able to create one from scratch for my own projects. I'm afraid this is a bit off topic but I really didn't know where else to go.
