Hi.

I am looking for an application/shell extension that will integrate MP3 tag info as columns in Windows Explorer (the file manager, not the internet browser). Things like Album, Genre, and all that good stuff.

I have found various programs that will add MP3 tag info to a files Property page, but that is not what I am looking for. (That does not lend itself to simply opening a directory and scanning down a list.)

There are others that will display the info as a tool tip-- again, not quite what I am looking for.

I did find a tutorial on how to add MP3 tag info columns to Windows Explorer, but it only works for v1, not v2. *hrm* (I am not super programming saavy, so it would be a fairly involved undertaking to do this myself. I have no idea if it could be easily adapted to adding v2 info instead.)

Anyone know of something out there?

Thanks

What Windows version are you on? In XP I can do that. Just have to change the view to Details. Gives me artist album year track number and duration in columns. Right clicking on a column gives more column options (genre and more).

Guess the Windows version would help, eh? :ditsy:

I am using Windows 2000.

I may have actually found a solution to my question...

I am going to give it a try. I'll let everyone know how it works out.

tupperduck - it would be helpful to know whether the program you've found works with other file formats than mp3, please. On the face of it, it should work with any kind of file with an ID-3 tag. All my music files are MPCs.

It doesn't seem to work with .ogg

As far as I know, it works with .mp3 files exclusively.

If I had to speculate wildly, I would say it has something to do with file associations and the fact that MP3ext is an add-on to the Windows shell, not a standalone application.

Said restrictions aside, it does what I hoped it would do, namely allow me to display mp3 tag info as columns on Window Explorer, as well as a few other things.

One of the things I don't like about it is that it replaces all your mp3 icons (though keeping application association) with its own. Checking "disable IconHandler" in the Options will stop this, though I had to go back into QCD and re-apply the file associations to get the original QCD mp3 icons back.
