Now that there is an even tighter little community due to the IRC channel, would you guys be interested in making a team for the Cancer Research project at United Devices?

If you don't know what it entails, basically you download a program that sits in your tray, and occasionally grabs "units" of data from the web. It uses the idle time of your processor to help the fight against cancer by using various permatations of molecules against it's data set.

Once it's installed, no user action required, and it takes little system resources to run. It's for a good cause!

Just an idea to put the QCD community to good use...what do you guys think?

I do this on my computer. its really good doesn't slow down my 800 barely at all. Either runs all the time or as a screensaver. http://www.grid.org/about/

Well, go here http://www.grid.org/download/gold/download.htm and download the Agent (a few megabytes). Run it, and register the program when it asks.

Once it's up and running, go to http://www.grid.org/services/teams/team.htm?id=E721B8B5-7392-4FF3-AA94-D2BC6F54E78E and click "Join Team"

Then, you'll be helping the QCD team fight cancer. And you'll get a warm fuzzy feeling!

If ya need any help, I'm in IRC if you want to ask a quick question, or of course I'll reply here.

I went ahead and set up Team Quintessential, hopefully I'll see a few of you join soon!

I'm on board. Couldn't take my QCD name with me, though. I guess someone else got it first, so look for me as "Speaker-to-Animals".

Just a note for others who might be joining us: If you are trying to register the Agent and it keeps telling you that your username or password doesn't match their records, it probably means that someone is already using the username you selected. Pick another name and try again. It's for a good cause. :bulb:

"Primary task is executing...52% done" Oh Yeah! pretty cool! and you also get to see how much progress is done visually. I see a nice looking molecule, undoubtably unfinished of course. CPU temperature wont go lower than 60 degrees celcius though, hmmm i shouldn't worry about that.

btw, it takes about 70-80% CPU, so i dont know about "it is not CPU intensive" Thankfully i have Hyperthreading, so i can always let it run without slowing down my pc.

UD uses your CPU dynamicly. For eg. if You launch a game or something, usege of CPU by UD drops down (anyway it should) so You don't see much difference (especially if You have that kind of monster :) ).

I let it make a complete run wich took 7 hours and a bit and generated 161 points, but on the website i dont have any points! I mean, why? How do i get the points to show up on the website? I'll try with proxy disabled, but the upload will be 1kByte per second :(

-swt-

the score on the website is not done at the same time you upload the result...
i think its refreshed every 12h...
well... dunno exactly...

p.S: now joined the QCD-Team (SatYricon is my nick...)

Quote from UD FAQ:
Why is it that when I upload results to the server, my member page and my team page do not display the results right away?
The points on the Member Homepage only periodically. The points on the Teams web page update every 24 hours. When checking on your points, please keep these delays in mind.

OK, I'll wait for it. btw i completed another run today, so that nicely adds up to the points :D. Just one more question, how much storage space should i give it? Is 1 GB enough?

yes, 1gig is enough...
i only have 500MB for UD...

I have 9.77 =)

It won't need very much, on my system it's always just taken what it needs and I left it to defaults - but then I have a lot of free space on my systems =)

I was just wondering because the reference computer has 5GB. Also i have still 52GB freespace. Still, if it doesn't matter, then ill leave it at the default settings. My computer scores 114 anyway, way above the reference computer

-swt-
04-07-2004, 05:15 PM
well... the reference-computer is only to show, what would be the best system...
however... you'll never need 5gigs for UD !

my PC scores : 122

Processor : 131 Points
(Athlon T-Bird XP1400)

Memory : 200 Points
(768MB CL2 SD-Ram)

Storage : 20 Points
(1 Gig for UD)

Network : 63 Points (at the moment... allways changing...)

I think its time for an upgrade... my poor old Duron 800, its taking over 24hrs to process the results! Didn't used to take that long tho, usually 19hrs...

Rex_Mundi_Incarnit
04-08-2004, 08:21 PM
Really, that long? My computer takes about 10 hours to process one task, after that it is sent back to UD. But maybe there are big tasks and smaller ones, im not sure. The one it's doing now, it needs to process 200 ligands. The previous one it was only 20.

Sheepeh
04-08-2004, 09:13 PM
Yeah, some units are a lot bigger than others, and there's no way to tell until it's done, that's the nature of the research. It will tell you how many hours it takes for a unit on average in your Stats though.

matty28carter
04-10-2004, 11:32 AM
this is odd. last unit i processed was 20 ligands and that took 1 and a half days, this one is 200 ligands and its 50% done in 7hours.

Maybe the first one was more complex...

i've run this for various teams for a while, but am concentrationg on folding @ home for the moment (different medical research project, click link in my sig for more info). it shouldn't need any space or power really (just more time if less power). it seems to be pretty clean. i'll get it running and join the team in a minute. /me = quad341 there as well

EDIT: Joined. Me and my athlon-64 will try to help out, but i'm running F@H at the same time (so it gets half my resources at most) and have dial up (so it can't update that often)

Every little helps mate! =)

I've tried most of these types from programs, including F@H, FAD, and SETI - UD is simply the easiest to "set&forget" - which means it can be used by everyone on these forums who wants to help out, as I understand it we have a wide range of abilities here =)

Okay guys, im back into the race and promise to bag some more points this time. I quit when i still had my lousy intel heat sink and thought that cpu temps of 65C really was too much. Later when i got my Zalman, it still didnt matter much because of the hot summer here, so i couldnt leave my pc on max cpu load for extended periods of time. But now that the weather has cooled down and i finally remembered my password, i joined again. Cpu temps max 58C now, much better :P (in idle its 46C but that doesnt matter now).

ps Im also trying to get used to sleeping with my pc still on. The new fan assembly is really quiet, but because im used to sleeping in a place where its absolutely quiet at night, it takes getting used to the noise of the fans. I will also get my downloads done faster ;)

Welcome aboard Appurve. If you read this thread, you should be able to figure how to join Team Quintessential. I had a look btw and not many have returned points lately (because of summer vacation maybe), but im positive that everyone will join again.

It's really cool if you've got HyperThreading because then you can assign CPU0 for instance to performing computations and use CPU1 for the rest, like playing a game and nothing slows down :cheeky:

Sadly I had to give up because my fan really started bothering me when it was humming constatly. I guess laptops just aren't ment for such use...

Anyone else care to join? Maybe any one who recently joined the forum? As for now i see that only Sheepeh, swt, and I are doing this thing. Of course im not forcing anyone, but right now it just doesnt feel like a group effort.

I'd done the cancer research thingy for a while before i joined the group. It just slows my PC up too much (its only an 800Mhz Duron) so i put it on screensaver mode, problem with that is that my computer is rarely left on its screensaver! When i get a faster machine next year i'll leave it on all the time.

Personally I don't do those kind of things. I dont really believe this helps science much, so I wont waste power on it unless they it is a more specific assignment.

Okay, thats cool. So how about we look for something more worthwhile. I really dont mind. Besides the Grid, there is for example folding @ home, or Zetagrid (www.zetagrid.net). If anyone else has any ideas, something better than the cancer research project, lets hear it :)

Here are some more cool projects ive found:

SETI@home: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/
Help discovering aliens (like we havent got enough of em here on earth ;))

Lifemapper: http://www.lifemapper.org/
"help discover knowledge of the life of the planet for the benefit of the Earth, its inhabitants and its environments."

Einstein@home: http://www.physics2005.org/events/einsteinathome/

The latter one isnt ready yet, but looks very interesting. It's also a grid computing project that will do calculations on gravitational waves (see link). If you are also interested you can let them notify you when the project is ready to commence. I think i'll join Einstein@home when its ready :p

Yes the Einstein@home looks interresting.

SETI@home has been around a long time and I know they have had all the CPU time they could use before. (Not sure about the current situation) If it's still the case, its a waste of power in my book.

Oh Yeah, Einstein@home has gone live! We should start a group effort again. Who's in? Check here (http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/) for information.
